The internet can be divided into roughly 4 types of spaces.

1. Kid-oriented. Adults *might* be welcome here if they behave, but the spaces are explicitly meant to be centered around kids.

2. Kid-friendly but not dedicated. Basically spaces that are meant to welcome all ages and remain family-friendly and welcome or encourage mingling across age groups provided everybody remains appropriate in their behavior.

3. Free-for-all. These aren't catered to one group or the other, but the understanding is that you may encounter sections that have content aimed at older teens or adults which may or may not be marked as such (which may or may not violate the rules, this will vary space to space). Venturing into these spaces requires the ability to understand that you may be exposed to triggering or adult content, even if it is fully warned for, because it is permitted in these spaces. Most social media has generally fallen into this category, though with current puritanical sanitization efforts that's being stolen.

4. Adult-oriented. Usually this is considered stuff like websites dedicated to graphic sexual media, but there are other spaces where it's just adults who just want to talk to other adults without kids around even if nothing they're talking about is technically family-unfriendly. We all know kids get into these spaces by lying about age, that has been a thing since before the internet. Kids who do need to take responsibility for their behavior, but really shouldn't be in these spaces in the first place. It is primarily up to the parents or other adults in a kid's life to ensure they don't bypass the age barriers. These spaces are required to put up some restrictions, but you really can't do anything to stop people from lying to get around them...

It's really important to have all 4 of these sorts of spaces to give different groups areas they can be themselves in.

But there's more and more a push (honestly based in regressive--often various flavors of Christian fundamentalist--ideas of "sex is an evil sin and anything depicting it will taint us forever") to eliminate not just Type 4, but Types 3 as well and turn them both into Type 2.

This maximizes the audience while also getting rid of "objectionable" content advertisers don't want their products/services displayed alongside.

Politics and the deeply conservative right-wing leaning sorts desperately resisting a world that's progressing past the desire for hateful suppression of anyone who is Different and rejection of all other viewpoints are trying to maintain as much control as possible, and what better way than by forcibly suppressing expression of the masses?
