âSo, whatchu gotta do is look âem right in the eye for just a split second and say, âHey.ââ
âH-hey,â said Steve, his voice dropping down a register in an attempt to be suave.
Soda burst out laughing. âNot like that. You gotta put more charisma in it, more⊠confidence, yâknow what I mean? LikeâŠâ he put on a cool voice, âHey.â
The two exploded with laughter, echoing around the empty DX convenience store.
âI donât get it. How dâyou pick up more broads than me if weâre using the same methods?â
Soda smiled. âDunno. Maybe stop calling âem âbroadsâ in public? Itâs demeaning to women, yâknow.â
Steve scoffed. âMust be your natural charms, then. I mean, if I was a girl Iâd be head over heels for ya.â
Soda snorted, his ears tinted the faintest shade of red. Mustâve been the heat. âAww, stop it you. People are gonna think weâre gay or something.â He leaned back against the counter. ââSides, the days of picking up broads are over for me. Iâve got the best girl in the whole wide world nowââ
âYeah, yeah, Sandy. Youâre always been nonstop ravinâ bout how fantastic and pretty and funny she is for the past month. Itâs as if youâre gonna outright marry her or sumthinââ.
Soda looked a bit stung. âWhatâs wrong with gettinâ married? I mean, I love her and she loves me, so why not speed up the process a bit?â
Flustered, Steve responded, âNow, I-I didnât mean it like that. Just sayinâ that you can never be too cautious, âspecially when it comes to marriage. Me myself, I could never imagine just settling down with one girl for the rest of my life.â He made a face of disgust.
âRelax Stevie.â Soda chuckled. âSince me and Sandy are goinâ out tomorrow night anyway, I can try to set you up with one of her friends. I think sheâs ever mentioned one of âem before: nameâs Evie, if I remember correctly. Rhymes with Stevie.â He winked.
Darn, thought Steve. His wink really does work on everyone.
âAlright, alright, breakâs over lads. Get back to work!â hollered the manager.
âThey both grumbled as they headed for the gas pumps outside.
âSo, whatâs it gonna be?â Soda pushed open the door. âYou in?â
Steve mulled it over for a while. Heâd do anything to see Soda happy.
âGuess Iâve got nothing to lose.â
The next evening, Steve burst into the Curtis house, breathless from running, wearing his best double denim set.
âClose the door, will ya? Electricity donât come for free, yâknow,â yelled Darry from the dining table.
âDoes anyone know where Soda is?â Steve huffed.
Soda emerged from his room. âWhat took you so long? We gotta go pick âem up by 7.â He did a double take on Steve. âAnd what on earth are you wearing?â
âWhat? They're my best jeans. Broads love double denim,â sniffled Steve.
Soda sighed. âThey look like theyâve been through 3 rumbles unwashed. Youâre all sweaty too⊠for Christâs sake Steve, this is exactly why you never score a second date.â
âWell, you look cool by the way.â Steve took in Sodaâs edgy leather jacket. âDid you borrow that from Darry?â
âYeah⊠hey, maybe you could benefit from borrowing some clothes from my wardrobe.â
A few minutes later, Steve hopped in their borrowed T-Bird (courtesy of Buck), clad in Sodaâs finest clothes (most of which wouldâve been shamed by the Socs. It smelled like him. Steve thought that that could be helpful later.
âWhere are we going anyway?â
âThe movies,â said Soda casually. âThen dinner if weâre all still hungry after. By the way, weâre splitting the bill 50/50. Pay me back later.â
The ride to the movies was quite silent at the backseat after the initial small talk, while Soda and Sandy chatted away. Steve surveyed the girl. She had big doe-like eyes and soft curls from what he could tell by the streetlights. She had a pretty charming smile, like Sodaâs, though it had since dropped when she first saw him.
âSo, uhh⊠you like movies?â
âTheyâre fine,â she answered.
Soda mouthed the words âyouâre doing great!â, then giggled with Sandy in the front seat. Buncha losers, Steve thought.
âYou watch Paul Newman a lot? I know Sodaâs kid brother does. Man, it sure is annoying sometimes when he goes on and on and on about it when Iâm just trying to watch TV. What âbout you? Dâyou have a kid sibling or something? I donât, but I consider Ponyboy kind of like my little brother sometimes⊠Okay, Iâll stop talking,â he said, noticing Evieâs deadpan expression.
After an uncomfortable moment of silence, she finally spoke. âI like cars.â
Steveâs expression instantly lit up. âOh yeah?â
âYeah. Iâve been saving up for years to buy my dream Ford, but theyâre just so expensive these daysâŠâ
He sighed. âI get it. I work at the DX with Soda, so I get to be around âem all the time. I mostly do repairs, oil changes, stuff like thatâŠâ
âThatâs really cool.â
âHey, maybe you should come over sometime. I can show you the ropes, maybe even take a few out for a test drive. Itâll be cool.â
She smiled. Soda gave him another thumbs up and a smile.
Steve would do anything to see Soda happy.
