It should be noted that in America, the person who picks the title is rarely the person who wrote the article. I was super weirded out when I found that out, but it makes those articles with contradicting titles make a lot more sense.Ā

I realize this is just like an enthusiastic personal reaction and not intentional misinformation, and itās mostly correct, but I thought Iād add my 2 cents as a molecular biologist:
- she didnāt discover HIV, point blank, she was the first scientist to clone it (i.e. artificially introduce its genome into another organism, allowing it to be produced within that organismā Iām not at work rn so I canāt get behind the paywall to actually read her paper from 1985 that has the specifics but it was probably bacteria).
- itās also worth noting that as a postdoctoral scholar and later as the head of her own lab, she wouldāve had a team of people working under her doing a lot of the day-to-day lab work that actually produced these results (especially once she became the head of her own lab), as well as collaboratorsā specifically, in the case of the project to map the HIV genome, these people:
(Publishing convention is to list the primary investigators i.e. heads of the lab(s) last.) Sciencentific discovery is hardly ever the product of a single individualās efforts.
- the āmolecular knifeā technology mentioned, known as ribozyme technology, isnāt something she inventedā she was simply the first to use it to disrupt HIV production. Itās a well-studied tool for disrupting RNA-based viruses including hepatitis C (which appears to be the main focus of her research now) and adenovirus, and was the focus of a lot of the investigation into the possibility of gene therapy for a long time (that focus has shifted in the last few years to CRISPR-Cas9 technology).
So yes, her work was absolutely critical to our current understanding and treatment of HIV and she deserves to be celebrated. But the nature of biology research is slow-moving and collaborative, and doesnāt often fit the narrative of the lone genius that people like to idolize.
her work is VERY impressive, but real life science isnāt comic book science, especially in the biology field, it simply canāt be an one person effort nowadays, which is why there are some argument around the restriction of the number of people (currently 3) to hold a Nobel Prize together in the Medicine field because big research breakthrough worthy of a Nobel Prize nowadays can easily be the cooperative work of more than 3 P.I.s (not to mention the post-docs, RAs, and students who do the actual wet works)
