I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.

Epialtidae cf. Rochinia. A. Milne-Edwards, 1875

Mystery Epialtid crab that's been sitting in the draft for months. I never found out the identity for this one despite seeing it more than a couple of times in bycatch piles. My crab knowledge has failed me... The genus Rochinia is the closest match I have for it, although no species match this specific morphology. Species in the genus usually have spines protruding the dorsal carapace, but for this one it's reduced to just obtuse tubercles and bumps. Rochinia is a highly diverse and chaotic genus so it could be just a species that's not well documented(which appears to be most of them.) Ah good old spider crabs, ever the taxonomic mystery.
