Offical Poster for Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts
Maybe we should just stay here, Harry. Grow old.
Her store is here and the sticker is still available.
26/11/2021 — loved this moment when i stumbled upon someone else with a punk+mushroom outfit! immediate friend req 🥰
I’m new to Animal Crossing Pocket Camp and am looking for friends! Add me: 88343961618

When in doubt, go to the library!
This is STUNNING
Another clip I animated from the Harry Potter audio books for fun.
(Ps. I won’t animate the Jim Dale version. Stop asking. Half the humour comes from all three characters being voiced by a dry toast British man)
need to start carrying a megaphone around so I can say "j k Rowling, *megaphone screeches* THE FIGUREHEAD OF A HATE MOVEMENT,"
she's not generically "icky" or "sucks" or "has bad opinions" she is the enthusiastic leader of a present day hate movement that wants the extermination of a minority. she's not Orson Scott Card or H P Lovecraft or any vaguely bigoted author you can name--she's exponentially worse because of the reach and scope of her power and ambition, and anyone who can't acknowledge that first and foremost when talking about h*rry p*tter is no ally of mine no matter how much she can "eat your shorts".
i also hate that jk rowling uses her considerable platform to bolster transmisogyny, but if you consider Orson Scott Card and HP Lovecraft “vaguely bigoted” then i am very curious about your definition of distinct bigotry
there's something truly miserable about JK Rowling being, at this point, the most prominent public figure associated with a hate movement but facing effectively no consequences for it because it's an issue that only a small fraction of the population is passionate about.
Like it's one thing if you have someone who's said or done some "problematic" things in the past. It's one thing for a media figure to be beloved by annoying MAGA chuds but despised by anyone even a hint left of center. It's one thing to consume art from someone who was a monsterous bigot in their lifetime but has long since passed.
But with Harry Potter it's just.... nothing. There's not even a conversation to be had. Aside from people who are online enough to care, everyone else just carries on as before. There is no cancelation to come back from, there is no smaller audience the work is restricted to, there is nothing to contend with unless you're friends with a specific kind of person. I still see people on dating apps who put BLM or ACAB or some other progressive slogan in their bios, but list Harry Potter as their favorite books. There is no shame in this. They see no contradiction because to them it is a non-issue.
Rowling is the face of a hate movement and most people who like her work don't even realize it. They don't have to realize it. And if they did, they probably wouldn't understand why what she's saying or doing is wrong.
I think about this every time I see new Harry Potter media coming out. Society does not care enough about people like me to even question if the people who hate us should face consequences for it.
Pedantic nitpickery of the day: “death of the author” and “fuck canon I do what I want” are not the same thing.
Which is not a critique of the “fuck canon” approach to fandom, that’s just not what Death of the Author means.
@korramills said:
I’ll bite. What’s the difference between those two?
“Fuck canon I do what I want” is just an approach to fandom that can mean any of the following:
I am not particularly concerned with being canon-compliant in my fanworks and headcanons.
I am not personally motivated to have an extensive knowledge of the canon I’m fannish about.
I will freely rewrite, overwrite, or just plain ignore part of canon that I don’t like.
All of which are, again, fine. Fandom is transformative. Rewriting and reimagining the text is part of what we do.
Death of the Author is a critical framework based on the 1967 essay “La mort de l'auteur” by French literary theorist Roland Barthes, and posits that a text should be interpreted without regard for the author’s intent. (It’s worth noting here that like all critical frameworks, Death of the Author has its limitations, and I’m not going to get into arguing for or against it here–only that it’s a theory that exists.)
Obviously, there’s some potential overlap between these two ideas. But the critical difference, as I see it, is that Death of the Author is not about discarding or rewriting the text; it simply suggests that once the text is out there, it exists unto itself separate from the author, and the author’s intended meaning is no more authoritative than the interpretation of a reader/viewer/audience member.
And though the lines can get blurry, I think it’s always worth drawing a distinction between finding alternate interpretations of a text, and throwing out the text altogether.
death of the author: the text says the curtains are blue. I think that means they represent death, based on my whole reading of the text. it does not matter what the author thought they represented, or if they represented anything: part of a work is the reader’s experience of it, and that includes their interpretation of what certain things mean, even if that’s different than what the author thought they meant.
fuck canon I do what I want: the text says the curtains are blue. I write fanfiction where they are red, because fuck blue curtains.
