i’ve seen people counter the idea of polyamory as a solution to conflicting ships by saying that sometimes the characters in question would not work as a poly ship which is fair and often true but as an avid enjoyer of both polyamory and toxic relationships i think it’s kind of awesome when a particular poly configuration mostly exists to drive everyone involved to madness

Hello again everyone! I have long been absent from this blog, but I have a new Tumblr publication to share! This annotated bibliography of "Tumblr" was created for Oxford University Press as an introductory resource for media scholars about Tumblr. It was written by Allison McCracken (me!), one of your editors for A Tumblr Book and recently published online but unfortunately behind a paywall, so I have made it fully accessible on this blog through the link above. The bibliography offers a useful overview of tumblr scholarship (with some articles by key journalists as well!) from its beginnings through 2025, with an overall introduction and nine different descriptive categories with ten citations each: "Foundational Early Studies," "Major Works," "Industrial and Cultural Positioning," "Structure and Aesthetics," "Fandom," "LGBTQA+ and Genderqueer," "Counterpublics and Subcultures," "NSFW Tumblr and the Adult Content Ban" and "Health/Mental Health." It doesn't contain everything ever written, but it's a good introduction if you haven't read much and there's a lot of wonderful work there! Some of the articles cited are behind pay walls themselves, but send me a message if you have trouble finding one and I can send it on to you. I hope you enjoy!

No matter how shitty it might feel in the moment, most of the time when someone comes to you to communicate a boundary or a need or a negative feeling about something you did, it is actually a compliment. They are telling you BECAUSE they care about you and want it to work between you and because they trust you to care to do better. If they didn't care about you, they'd just avoid you. That uncomfortable convo is in fact a declaration of love and trust. Or at least intention of friendship. If they didn't like you, they'd just try to avoid you whenever possible. They wouldn't care to have The Talk (which is often scary and uncomfortable for them also). So try to treat their trust with care, even if it really upsets you to learn that you've accidentally hurt them

if you’ve ever thought i’m standoffish, politely distant, or generally hard to befriend, know in your heart that i’m exactly the same in real life. my neighbours just showed up at my door drunk on Canada Day celebrations and told me how desperate they’ve been to meet me for the past few months and then tried to fix the water pump in my basement

they've told me the gossip which is that a few years back a 70 yr old man collapsed the bridge at the end of my road by driving his tractor over it, lost his tractor in the river, climbed back up the cliff unscathed, walked an hour home, and then the whole road fell into disrepair and all the campgrounds closed and the once popular waterfall down the road became obscure and secret. so like, be the change you want to see in the world. collapse a bridge to chase out the tourists. also you can lose widespread knowledge in under 10 years if one old man collapses a bridge

so i have finished a psychological thriller novel, and have begun the process of doing research so i can prepare to query agents. now, my novel has some pretty intense triggers in it, so i am aware it’s a bit of a hard sell– that being said, many agents have a “do not send me your novel if it has these things” list, so that’s what I’m looking for so i don’t accidentally trigger someone.

so i’m going down this list, and i find this agent. their “do not send me” list includes the following: non-consent/sexual violence, age gaps, teacher/student relationships, stalkers, cheating, everyone dies at the end, miscarriage/pregnancy, and abuse masked as love.

okay, cool! everyone has different tolerances for stuff, and it’s perfectly reasonable to not want to be involved with a story that has stuff you’re uncomfortable with. not the agent for me, but good on them for defining their boundaries.

but then i scroll back up and they’re requesting for gothic horror.
