“Short hair makes you look like a boy!” This is assuming That there is one certain way for “boys” and “girls” to look Not so Some boys have long hair, some girls have short hair, some people who are both or neither also have hair Hair has no gender Humans are allowed to look different from each other and express themselves how they like Gender identity and gender expression are not the same

They aren’t “real” girls because they were born with a penis Anyone is a girl who says they are a girl Stop trying to undermine someone’s identity They know themselves better than you do Anatomy and identity are different, and sometimes separate Why are you so obsessed with other people’s genitals anyway

“You’re going to break a lot of hearts one day” Why would you ever Ever Say this to a girl A young, impressionable girl Breaking hearts is not a compliment, or a goal Coming from someone who has broken at least one From simply being honest and being myself It is a burden - a guilt that has been (mis)placed on my shoulders since childhood I never wanted to be labelled a heartbreaker simply for existing

“You don’t want kids? You’ll change your mind one day” No I won’t Even if I do, one day, that doesn’t make my opinion right now any less valid or deserving of respect Stop disbelieving people about their own life choices Also, having children is not a necessary milestone for a successful or fulfilling life

“Don’t have sex before marriage - boys really want a virginal girl” Sure they do And are boys ever held to that same expectation To stay virgins until marriage? Because as women are shamed for “impurity,” boys are applauded for “experience” I love the smell of double standards in the morning

“You shouldn’t wear so much makeup” The natural look is great The makeup look is great The anything you feel like doing or not doing to your own face look is great Let people do whatever they want to their own bodies Whatever makes them feel good Why do you care

“Selfies are just for attention” Maybe Maybe not What’s so wrong about liking attention What’s so wrong about feeling beautiful and confident in your own skin And wanting to share that feeling with others We were taught for so long to hate our bodies What is so threatening about finally loving them

“Cat-calling is flattering! Learn how to accept a compliment!” “I like your hair” is a compliment “You’re a really talented writer” is a compliment The gross, vulgar things that men shout at women they don’t know on the street Are not compliments They are harassment - meant to imply ownership and dominance and even violence Compliments should not make people fear for their lives walking home Compliments should not actually get people killed

that Moroccan girl who killed herself after being forcibly married to her rapist (x)

that 11-year-old Texan girl who got raped by 18 men while the New York Times said she “dressed older than her age.” (x)

Reyhaneh Jabari, an Iranian woman who was tortured in jail then hanged after killing the man who was going to rape her. (x)

Nojood Al-Ali from Yemen who got divorced when she was 10. (x)

the 16-year-old girl from Ohio who got raped and filmed at a party by 2 boys, while CNN reporters talked about the bright futures of the rapists as athletes. (x)

the 94 women in Jordan who were legally married to their rapists, only in 2014. (x)

the 8-year-old girl who was married to a man 5 times her age, and died on the day of her wedding because she suffered from bleeding and uterine rupture after intercourse. (x) 

the 25 Palestinian women who were killed by either their brother or father, in order to “protect their honor” only in 2013. (x)

the 99% of Egyptian women and 90% of Yemeni women who have experienced sexual harassment (x) (x)

condoms are free because 40 million people died during the aids crisis, and the vast majority of them were lgbt+, sex workers, or both. condoms are free because people dying of aids had to fight tooth and fucking nail so no one else needed to. condoms are free because people were having real actual die ins as form of protest. condoms are free because the government laughed while the lgbt community was dying, until they were forced to fight back. condoms are free because they save lives, everyday. they save rape victims lives, they save lgbt lives, they save sex workers lives, ect. saying condoms are only free for the benefit of men is transmisogynistic, classist, homophobic, and completely ignores the struggles of sex workers and rape victims. 

so the next time you bring up the fight for free menstruation products (and yes, you will have my support in that) leave free condoms out of it

#TechStandsWithPP: A message from Tumblr’s CEO and Planned Parenthood’s president

When Planned Parenthood was founded a century ago, it was illegal to even hand out information about birth control. Thanks to generations of brave women and men who formed secret societies, challenged unjust laws, and started Planned Parenthood health centers in their own towns, we’ve come a long way since. Millions of people, regardless of income or insurance coverage, now have access to birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing and treatment. Each year, Planned Parenthood proudly provides health information to nearly 70 million people online and 1 million people in classrooms and communities across the country. Today, America is at a 30-year low in unintended pregnancy and a historic low in teen pregnancy.

But all of that progress is a reminder of how much women and men in America now stand to lose. Extreme politicians at every level of government are doing everything they can to block millions of people from coming to Planned Parenthood, deny access to affordable health care, and roll back women’s rights over their own bodies. We are facing a national health disaster, especially in our most vulnerable communities.

That’s why we’re calling on the tech industry to join Tumblr in standing with Planned Parenthood and standing up for access to health care.

A 100-year-old health care provider and the platform powering 335 million blogs may seem like an unlikely pair. But over the last few years, Tumblr and Planned Parenthood have teamed up to provide information and organize communities in support of reproductive rights. We’re proud of all we’ve accomplished together and with overwhelming support from the Tumblr community.

Technology has become instrumental in the fight for fairness and equality across a range of issues. I keep thinking how much more powerful the Spiderman origin story would be if Peter Parker was an African American kid, whose Uncle Ben was shot by police while being arrested for a minor parking infraction. There is no formal investigation, and Peter decides to put himself on the line to prevent it happening again. He tackles the white crimes that go unpunished, punishes POC criminals fairly. He is the leveler, always fighting to be without bias, to be just. To protect people like his uncle. 

This not only mirrors so much of what’s happening in America, but feeds right into the complex relationship between Spiderman, the authorities and the media. 

Peter Parker is a brilliant student, awkward, a nerd, but is branded a thug, a gang member, a criminal, because of his appearance. The media latch on to that and misrepresent him totally.

The police, humilitated by the fact that he refuses to work with them and often punishes cops themselves for brutalizing innocent people, or guilty people who still deserve better treatment than they get, attempt to hunt him down.

If y’all want to fucking go here, we can. Everything from classic movies to current rap hits tell the Black boys that a lightskinned woman is worth loving. Every chance a rapper gets, he let’s it be known that lightskinned women are the prize. 

Are White people racist? Absolutely but guess what, they still going to pick you over me ANY DAY. So all those internships, jobs, promotions and credits you had to fight for, believe me, there was a dark skin girl fighting harder. Dark skin women been fighting so long, y’all forgot that Claudette the original DARK SKIN woman who refused her seat on an Alabama bus had to watch YOUR GRANDPARENTS AND UNCLES recreate it with a light skinned Black woman so it would be received. I’m talking about the mention of Claudette as a civil rights leader. She wasn’t made a representative because she was 15, pregnant, and inexperienced. Not because of her complexion. Nor was she the “original,” she was one of many women that bravely refused. I hate how “desperate to one up each other” black history “"experts”“ try to use her as the anti rosa parks, as opposed to just one of many civil rights heroes. It certainly wasn’t a colorism issue.

Claudette Colvin refused her seat March 2, 1955, her son was born March 1956. Therefore she didn’t get pregnant until June of 1955. Oops, I think that’s AFTER the incident. Do your research before you declare bullshit. Colorism was very much shushed and swept under the rug. That’s where people like you get it from. 

In her OWN words: “And I didn’t fit the image either, of, you know, someone they would want to show off.”
