A photograph is shaped more by the person behind the camera than by what's in front of it. To prove this we invited six photographers to a portrait session with a twist. 'Decoy' is one of six experiments from The Lab, designed to shift creative thinking behind the lens.

So I ordered a Dell 27 UltraHD 4K Monitor - P2715Q. When it arrived I hooked it up to my computer as a second monitor attached to my Mac Book Pro. I found it would not display in its maximum resolution. I decided to try their online chat help.. this was the transcript...

They wanted to charge me for an answer? I decided I would try calling customer support.. After 30 min with the same music looping over and over. I was talking to someone that could give me no answers and definitely had no clue about the product. So it was their answer to ship me another monitor. I was told there would be a return shipping label to return the first monitor. Well after a couple days the second monitor arrived and had the same problem and no return label for the first monitor. so I contacted customer support to return the monitor. Not only did this take multiple calls I was informed by one customer service rep I he could only send me a return label for the second Monitor sent to me and I would have to contact customer service to get a shipping label to return the first monitor. Once again 3 transferred calls and finally someone takes my info and tells me I should receive an email with the return UPS label within 30min to an hour. Well a day went by and no email was sent.. I had to call again and get transferred around. Mind you...every time you call and ever person you speak to asks you your Order Number.. Customer Number, Shipping Address, Billing address ...Phone Number and email. yet if they accidently disconnected you they will not contact you back. Finally I get someone that is helpful and gets me the UPS return label sent to me. Almost two weeks after my initial order finally I am able to send both monitors back. I am told it could take 15 days to get the refund. About two weeks go by and I receive a call saying they still are waiting for both the monitors to be returned. Luckily I have kept both the UPS tracking Numbers and have to prove to them they are mistaken and have received the monitors back almost two weeks ago. They tell me they will have to take the numbers and look into it. I am not contacted back by them so I call them again to check on my return and refund, Once again I am transferred around and told the refund should be returned to my account in 3- 4 days. The refund has not been issued. I wait... the Initial order was placed on 12/9/14.. I once again call them today 1/27/14 I speak to the first person who asks me every question and has no answers and says he needs to transfer me. I am transferred.. wait on hold 20 min and am asked all the same questions to be disconnected. I call back.. wait on hold am asked all the same questions and told I need to be transferred. I have Business perfered line and did not pay with dells card and need to speak to Dell Financial so they can process my credit card. I am give the number 1800 624 9897.. Transferred.. wait on hold... asked all the same questions.. told I have wrong department given new number....1800 819-3355...Transferred.. wait on hold... asked all the same questions.. told I have wrong department given new number....1800 6 24-9896...Transferred.. wait on hold... asked all the same questions.. After repeated let me put you on hold for a minute.. I am told they see the problem that the returns warehouse never checked in the monitors...told I have wrong department given new number....1800 456 3355.. I have completely lost my patients. And demand to speak to a supervisor. she will not put one on the phone and insists unless she asks me every question again I can not be helped.. She then tells me the refund has been initiated and It should take another couple of days.. I have yet to get my refund... 14 phone calls. 7 emails and a trip to UPS to send back two large monitors.. The repeated incompetence on trying to return and get refunded on one item is absurd. One 5 min call to Amazon and this would have been resolved. I hope by taking the time to write about this experience I will at least spare someone else from the aggravation of dealing with this completely inept company. Please pass on the word and avoid dell at all costs!!!!!!

WD My Passport - not ready for prime time
I love playing with new tech but being an earlier adopter can come at a price. I recently picked up the new WD My Passport Wireless 2tb. I had read about it and knew someone that had picked up one before me. A drive that I could connect to wirelessly and had a sd slot to transfer files automatically while I was in the field was something I was very interested in. All its options sound much better than they work in reality. It comes with little documentation and instructions on how to use it. After a bit of tinkering I was able to download the app and figure out its settings. I was out on a shoot and it was time to try it out in a real life setting. I was between shoots and plugged in the SD card for transfer... I waited, waited and waited. The transfer was so slow 25 min later It was still not done and I left it in the car to continue without me. I wish I could say it worked perfectly plugging it in or using it wirelessly. but it just didn't. I decided to give it one more shot and use it just as a backup drive plugged directly into the computer. I transfered 4 days of shoots hard wired into My Macbook and still found it slow. When I returned to my studio and plugged the drive in it was dead. I lost several days of work. Luckily I still had some of the shoots on sd cards. I talked to one of the WD reps at Photo Expo over the weekend and he acknowledged the slow transfer speeds and said it was something they were working on that would be addressed in a future firmware update. Unfortunately this drive is not ready or reliable yet for pro use.
