Didn't have the time to do much for Smaugust this year but I wanted to finish at least one piece to get back into the flow of doing art. I have a few other pieces that just need some finishing touches, so I'll probably finish and post them too.

Crips for eSims for Gaza is a collaboration between Jane Shi, Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha, and Alice Wong.
Please boost. This is urgent. There is a need for esims more now, than ever.
i cannot keep quiet about this anymore.
if you're in the US or Canada and interested in learning a language using a free app please get a library card and download MANGO. it's very good and extremely free with a library card (there are many public libraries and universities using the service, so make an account and use the search feature here to find out if there's one near you).
mango currently has 72 available languages and dialects (that's right! different courses for french or canadian french! spanish or latam spanish!). it's set up basically like an audiobook with text. the idea is that the narrator explains the words while you read, and you repeat after them or say the translation out loud when prompted. there's a daily review where you go through flashcards. you can also use the flashcards at your leisure and create your own. at the end of each chapter there's a listening comprehension quiz and a reading comprehension quiz. i cannot emphasize how effective this all is. and it's free with a card.
if you're not in the US or Canada and/or looking for something more like duolingo (don't use duolingo btw tldr they fired translators and replaced them with "ai"), then try BUSUU! it only has 14 languages atm but the lessons are really descriptive and effective. it also has a feature where you can correct other people's open-ended speaking/typing exercises. you set your fluent languages, and exercises by people learning those languages will appear in your feed for you to correct. you can even add others as friends! and, much like duolingo, it has a streak and leaderboard system for you to strive for, minus the guilt-tripping owl.
busuu is free (you watch ads to unlock lessons and they're all skippable after like five seconds), although it also has paid premium/plus versions (i don't use the paid version—the language courses are available for free, and the ad system is Really unobtrusive).
so that's my wisdom for the day. mango and busuu. please check them out :)
With Duolingo doubling down on replacing contractors with AI...
The Opened Way.
woke up this morning, rolled over, and very confidently tried to blow out my alarm clock like a candle. absolutely no precedent for that.
Ebeneezer in 1742 wakes with a start as for some reason he has put out his guttering candle by slapping atop it ith the palm of his hand. His hand is burned and his nightgown and cap are spattered with hot wax.
i meant to empty my contact lens case of cleaner and instead launched my allergy pills down the drain. wasn't even holding the lens case
once confidently pointed my car keys at the door out of my house and pressed the unlock button
when I used to drive I once walked to the front and bend down as if to start the crank. like. an a fuckin olde timey car. I never did it before or again but I will never forget how second nature it felt nor the cold breeze of 'what the fuck' that instantly followed
i once got home and tried to eat my dog's squeaky ball like an orange. thank god i didn't try to eat it like an apple, because after trying and failing to peel a small tennis ball for a couple seconds to get at the fruit, the rest of my brain kicked in.
My laptop is set up so a four finger tap pauses/unpauses the last interacted-with audio source. I have tried to use this without thinking to mute construction equipment or loud cars so many times.

I think I will start posting more in here ... I feel like whenever I post on Twitter, more often than not, my art never reaches enough people, no matter how hard I worked on it. I hope you like this one tho!
Love it when Rolling Stone puts out an article about the 25 most influential internet creators and I've only heard of 7 of them
Well I've only heard of two so you're doing better than I am!
I'm curious now since tumblr.com is home to such a specific audience and the list seems to be full of TikTokers and Instagramers. Is Instagramers the word?
Out of Rolling Stone's 25 Most Influential Creators of 2024,
how many names do you recognise?
0
1-5
6-10
11-15
16-20
20-24
All 25
reblog for a bigger sample size and also please tell me who, if any, you recognise?
I've only ever heard of MrBeast, never seen any actual content. So that's one? Sorta. It's bizarre to me that millions & millions of people are followers of these people I have never heard of.
Please don't let a Yorkshire themed park company destory Loch Lomond. Look, I'm not eloquent enough to break everything down but this application, if put through would see the destruction of one of the most beautiful places in Scotland.
It holds so many precious memories. Wildlife would be affected drastically, tourism of that scale in this area would do more harm than good.
The link below will give you more details and there's also a petition. It would mean the world to me if you gave it some attention. Thank you.
Save Loch Lomond - object to Flamingo Land 2.0 -
I got the Top 4.47% on this English Vocabulary test
I’m in the last 47.33%

Not too bad for a self-taught non native speaker i feel like
oh yay :)
I’ll be honest. I have no idea what half of those meant.
Thoughts on the Young Scott Card? Personally I used it for bus travel the most but I'd like to hear your thoughts on Pros/Cons
I don't really think there's any negatives to be honest? Never heard anyone say anything bad about Young Scot Cards.
I mean I wish it was but sadly it's only under 22s /j
kaijune day 1: seed
lets see how far i get in this one
Kaijune Day 6: Immolate
Thrak is a colossal Kaiju that embodies volcanoes and eruption. He is as big as a mountain, walking around in the desolate wastes of the first world.
He belches a smoke from the top of his head, and regularly drools a hot trail of magma from his maw. He is one of the first Kaiju that emerged in the early days of the new dynasty.
Kaijune 2024 - 01 Seed
Late start because of some tech issues which all seem to be sorted now. Originally I was going to do a seed that had crashed into the ground like a meteor but I decided to have it found buried and disturbed by mining operations felt more kaiju-appropriate than it's arrival being disconnected from human action.
Wish I'd got more of those rusty orange colours into the rock/dirt in the background. Hopefully I can stop getting shown articles about how necessary and importantcoal mining is now that I've stopped needing to look for reference images...
Edit: Using @flancortes 's list of prompts
Pokemon armors by magik_jack_art on Instagram
is this from subjectively ? I feel like I recognize this art style from that channel
It is, he has an old series on designing pokémon inspired armour sets as commissions for people.
The new discord update is an accessibility nightmare
I've gotten used to shitty UI updates from Discord but this is a new step over the line.
Pings now just put a shitty yellow line like you're dealing with a fault bit of code in VS, rather than someone getting your attention. It isn't nearly as attention grabbing or easy to find where you were pinged now.
Speaking of harder to find, did you like being able to know where a conversation started when you clicked in, so you can read from where you left off? Too bad! The red line is gone, strike 2 for people with parsing issues I guess.
Hovering over a message? Same background colour as if you weren't hovering at all. Another issue for people struggling to track stuff.
Enjoy being able to check which chat you're in at a glance? Dark backgrounds have YET AGAIN been removed. Because fuck you.
Messages that are days or even weeks apart? No more line easily indicating that this time jump has happened, better hope you spot that tiny date text while scrolling.
This whole update is a spit in the face of people who struggle to parse information at a glance, and the entire visual language of the UI is now fucked. Really wish they'd work on decreasing their obscene RAM usage or their countless security vulnerabilities before they work on this bullshit that nobody asked for.
