On This Day in 1967, the BLM designated nearly 62,000 acres of the Red Rock Recreation Lands in southern Nevada as its first recreation area. Today, Red Rock Canyon is better known as Nevada’s first National Conservation Area. Red Rock Canyon is located 17 miles west of the Las Vegas Strip on Charleston Boulevard/ State Route 159. The area is 195,819 acres and is visited by more than one million people each year. 

In marked contrast to a town geared to entertainment and gaming, Red Rock offers enticements of a different nature including a 13-mile scenic drive, more than 30 miles of hiking trails, rock climbing, horseback riding, mountain biking, road biking, picnic areas, nature observing and a visitor center. The unique geologic features, plants and animals of Red Rock represent some of the best examples of the Mojave Desert.

Out with the old, in with the new. We finally replaced out 30 year old futon with a new one. Our local foam and futon shop had this fantastic 4 inch 1.8lb 3 fold foam mattress in stock. Our Long Now camping trip this week will be its maiden voyage.

So here's the plan. Get home from this crazy business trip, do laundry, pack the van, pick up three fabulous women, and head east. We'll be driving to Mt Washington in Nevada to pick juniper berries with the Long Now. Juniper berries to make fun, really amazing gin, made by St. George Distillery exclusively for the Long Now. 4 days of high altitude dirt roads, big skies, and amazing people. With just a few hot springs thrown in for good measure.
