“Oh, that’s cute. The fact that you thought I’d want you to get to know me. Trust me, I’d rather not, especially vice versa.”
“You’ve called me cute two times already. Is it because of my great hair or my wonderful smile?”
“No, I could care less about standing, dude. But it’d be cool if my niece had a chair for her booster seat.”
“Dude, you picked a really great place to bring your niece.”
Teddy’s eyebrows furrowed. “Is it really so big of a deal? This is kind of urgent.” He began typing furiously, wanting to get it done so he could just leave. “I won’t disturb you,” he added, “I promise.”
“First of all, I never allowed you to sit down. Second of all, I would prefer it if you just left right away. People might think I know you, and trust me, I don’t want that.”
“If that’s what you want.” She said with a shrug of her shoulders, reaching for her underwear to pull it on before she slipped out of bed. “At least let me get you a drink then.”
“The stronger, the better,” he called out after her as he pulled his boxers on.
Kennedy swallowed hard, hearing her heart thumping in her chest, it may as well have been in her head because the sound was practically deafening. “I know.” She said quietly, sighing and running a hand through her hair awkwardly. “But, I never explained why… I never told you why I left.” Kennedy’s voice was barely more than and murmur at this point, and she couldn’t look at him. The man she loved. The man she loves? Who is she kidding, she still loves him, she couldn’t lie to herself.
He hadn’t had a clue he felt it until the emotion started dissipating fast that very moment. For the past year he knew the feeling was there. It was his constant companion every time he would look around him and find himself alone, without Kennedy, and so far away from her. There was the fear. At the time, he didn’t know what kind of fear it really was. He just knew, felt it in his being that it was there, growing inside him every day that passed. He spent countless nights with different women, but sent them away before they had the chance to make the decision themselves. He didn't want them to leave him, not like Kennedy did. He was afraid to be alone. “What’s the point?”
“Mommy, it’s Santa!”
Charlotte watched as the almost four year old shot like a lightning bolt towards the man wearing red and white, comfortably sitting in his chair. She was already at the front of the line when Charlotte had to squeeze through a forming line of people to get to her. “She’s crazy about Christmas,” she explained to the person beside her once she finally reached the little dusty blonde. “Who am I kidding— so am I!”
Trevor rolled his eyes at the brunette standing by his side, obviously exaggerating quite a bit. “You’re such a kid sometimes,” he mumbled and gently bumped his shoulder into hers. “And I’m not talking about Harper, I’m talking about you. ----How about you go and sit on Santa's lap? I'll gladly take pictures.”
“Too fucking bad, it’s the only place available in this God forsaken restaurant. If it’s not too much to ask, can you please chew in silence, completely mute if you will,” she sighed as put her elbows on the table, waiting for her order to arrive. At that point, Lizzie was too hungry and way too moody to deal with anyone who didn’t offer her a smile, or even with them.
“Did your mother drop you as a child, or are you just stupid? Deaf even? I said you couldn’t sit down, that means no. I don’t care what you think, I just want to enjoy my coffee alone.”
The brunette had been on her feet all day, seeing as she’d took it upon herself to pre-buy a closet full of fitting clothes to wear over the upcoming months, which had left her feel exhausted and the nausea to hit at her like a tidal wave. “I’m sorry, I promise you I won’t be any trouble– it’s just that there is nowhere else to sit and I could really do with a short rest. Please?”
“God---- if you can stop talking so much, then yes, yes you can sit down.”
A wide smile spread across Beth’s lips, though she furrowed her brow. “This is like high school all over again!” she said with sarcastic excitement (though she might have been a little too lax on the sarcasm for it to be entirely noticeable), and sat down anyway. “Seeing as all the other tables are taken, d’you think they’d let me eat my food in the restroom?”
“----You can’t be serious,” Trevor mumbled out of annoyance, but it was loud enough for her to hear.
“That’s cute but since it’s the last available seat, and you’re hogging a rather large table by yourself – I’ll have a seat. At least until your friend gets here, hm?”
“----Fine. You can sit down, but don’t expect me to be interested in your life story.”
Well, that at least answered the question if someone was using the chair or not. “— So it’s cool if I use it at another table?” Got to love the busy Sunday brunch hours.
“Do you have to?”
“Before you even finish— I have two perfectly working eyes, and I’m sitting down anyway.” Pulling the chair out, Olivia slammed a file in front of him, giving her brother a sweet smile. “You either sign this, or I’ll be calling dad to remove you from my apartment. Failing that, the cops. And I will also sue. So, think carefully, that’s all I had to say—”
“What the fuck is this, Liv? We both know I’m not signing anything without my lawyers present, so you can just cut the crap.”
“I don’t want to sit down! I just want to look at the flowers.” Sienna replied, trying to reach for the flowers. Standing up, Layne rushed over to her daughter as quickly as she could. “I’m so sorry if she bothered you. She likes to adventure when my back is turned.” She sighed, now looking at the book he had with him. “Great book, by the way. It’s one of my favorites.”
The little girl's voice caught his attention, his face looking in her direction. A small smile grew on his lips as she spoke, she made him think of Harper. “Here,” he said as he grabbed the flowers and handed them to the girl. “----It’s fine, she’s adorable. I don’t even know, I stole it from my sister. Haven’t had the chance to get to it yet."
Lyla finally caught up to the trainer, seated, completely relaxed as if he’s been sitting there for a while. She, on the other hand, was a sweaty mess— clutching her chest in a heaving fit and grabbing her knees. “Are… You ser– ious?” She collapsed in the seat anyway, grabbing his glass of water and chugging it down in a very unladylike manner. “Is this how— you always treat your– clients?”
“It’s Lyla, right? I already told my assistant that I’m not having any sessions today. I’m feeling.. bored. Too bad you didn’t get the message, but I’d prefer it if you found another table. I don’t do work in my free time. And while you’re at it, maybe you should get me a new glass of water.”
“There are no other seats left in the cafe. That would mean I’d have to stand while sipping my tea. Would you really allow a lady to do that or be a gentleman and let me sit?”
“Oh my, can’t let the Princess of Sweden sip her tea while standing, what would everyone think? ----I already told you, the seat isn’t up for debate. I’m saving it for someone special, my imaginary friend Doug.”
“ ––– I came here to take your order, actually. But, that’s alright, I’ll just come back again later.” In ten years, maybe. Alright, she had met this guy before, but the attitude still stroke her in the wrong places, and honestly, if he came up with something rude again, she would spit on whatever he ordered.
“Oh look, it’s the girl who is terrible at her job.”
