though he had not been the cause of her minor distress previously (no, rather it’d been her own thoughts), the more he spoke, the more the princess seemed to deflate. slowly did she lean onto the banister of the balcony, arms folded over one another as she slouched – and were it anyone else, she’d be entirely too aware of her posture, of the way she carried herself and the way she was seen. but with him, she felt a strange sort of kinship, as beings chosen by the heavens, as individuals cursed by destiny.
and it was not his refusal of her offer that upset her – whether he wanted to accompany her to lorule or not mattered not to her; ever the stubborn girl, she’d continue her research and go, regardless. no, it was the distance between them that became more apparent with each word. it was hardly his fault, for all citizens knew to treat her with nothing but polite reverence, and yet she hated it. it left her isolated, without a true friend, without a single soul around whom she could be herself. there was no one to lean on, no one to share her thoughts and hopes and dreams with – even in company, she was alone.
“…princess hilda and i may share a bond based upon our station, but i think that,” her brow furrowed, gaze still so utterly fixated on the setting sun, afraid as she was of seeing his expression. “that we could understand and sympathize with each other just as easily. i am not only a princess, you know. there is more to me than my title.” her tone was heavy, as though she were speaking not only to him, but to everyone – her guard, impa…everyone.
“i would…i would like if we could be friends.” she hummed, a soft and thoughtful sound. perhaps it was somewhat hypocritical; the only reason she had the chance to speak with him so candidly, to even suggest such a thing, was because he was hyrule’s hero. “… …i’d like if you would call me zelda.”
𝒯o be … friends. It’s a sudden proposition that spills forth from out the princess’ peachy lips sans preamble he’d be ashamed to admit took him aback a bit﹐much like the rest of her words﹒It’s not the prospect of this blooming kinship shared between them being made real by an accord that strikes startle into him﹐nor is it her majesty’s most firm response to his wayward comments﹒He cannot for the life of him place the source of this discomfiture﹒
𝒞ertainly both Zelda & Link could share in the strife of having held heavy burden loads, albeit hardships unalike granted their divergent roles﹒Both were children of destiny directed by the hands of fate &commanded to shoulder great adversity because of it﹒Most of all﹐Zelda was a person same as he﹐no matter how role parted them;for that﹐there existed a great many commonalities they two shared in that no crown of gold could come in between﹒
𝒜las﹐Link has always carried the weight of his troubles with silent﹐forbearing grace﹒To bridge those troubles to another’s for the sake of companionship — to unleash his conflicts onto any one individual &unveil his innermost turmoil all so to quote-on-quote ‘bond’ themselves closer together — are all prospective interactions of amiable nature beyond Link’s reckoning﹒
𝐻is envy for the Princess’ connection & comprehension when it came to Hilda was not out of lack of his potential with her … but for the effortless closeness they two shared in﹐the way Zelda could make sense of Hilda without word of explanation﹒Link too longed to know the pleasures of being close﹒However﹐to be understood by the Princess would require more than a few words of explanation﹐&for the ever silence-bound soldier﹐words came up scarce﹒

𝒯he spoken name feels criminally intimate as it rolls off his lips﹐but he swallows the burn of embarrassment down with it﹒To not know the commodity of being addressed by one’s own name in a casual manner to the point it is more luxury than diamond or silver ; what kind of life had the princess known ? Link yearned to know﹒
❝ 𝓘 would love to learn all you are beyond your title‚ if you would grant me the honor﹒Let’s speak of something easy﹒What sky of Hyrule is your favorite‚ Pri— Zelda?Do you fancy sunset skies?❞
I am sitting in the sun by the flowers, and I am holding back tears. I am telling myself to be brave, but I am still holding back tears. I am always the brave one, I think. Always the strong one. I live my life swimming in fear, but I am brave. I am always the hero, I think, and grimace at the thought. A hero isn’t any braver than anyone else, they are just brave five minutes longer. I tell myself five more minutes. Five more minutes. Another five. Then another, and another and another and another. But now I am sitting in the sun by the flowers and I am crying. My five minutes are up.

𝒫erhaps it ought to be disarming﹐for him to see this translucent figure &hear his voice that cuts through silence swift &steady as a blade﹒Warranted as it’d be if it were to perturb him;the faint﹐looming presence he felt &words it bid him never brought alarm﹒There was something oddly reposeful about the curious entity;& Link felt a unprecedented trust for this bizarre man he knew without knowing at all﹒Like knowing all the words to an old favorite song …

𝒥ust like magic﹐Link was thrust into this role﹒Told by the reputable village elder & the Princess of Hyrule alike he was special﹐that he alone could save the kingdom & restore peace﹒No one could blame Link for suspecting he must be back in bed dreaming all this up & any moment now﹐Gulley would barge in &round him up for work﹒
𝒩evertheless﹐with all the strength vested in him, the ‘hero’ he became﹒
𝐹oraging blindly ahead through perils unfathomable & tumbling thick &thin through thorny bramble & spiky beasts was… the newfound daily grind﹒The purple-clad enigma that had taken up residence in Link’s quarters supplied all the necessary tools for him to stave off a fair few scrapes at the price of a pretty rupee pocketful﹒Yet equipped as he were with all the apt ammunition one could fill their pockets with﹐naturally﹐he got the snot beat out of him﹒
𝐹or Link was nothing special;a silver-spooned brat whose parents had it made for him﹐a slack-spined youngster not even the straight-laced﹐no-nonsense blacksmith could iron out﹒A klutz, a hopeless case, a … disappointment﹐ or so he’d been told all his life﹒
𝐻yrule was in grave danger though﹐ & these were people that believed in Link &had faith in his potential— had always been tough on him because of it﹐put spit & grit onto him to make him shine﹒These were people Link loved & cherished & had his back always﹒He’d let them down so many times﹐the very prospect of failing them now robbed Link of the precious sleep that once came as naturally to him as a sword now fit in the curve of his palm﹒

eyes swept the ground below, watching as the people of hyrule went about their business – happy and peaceful, free from the stress and anxiety that still plagued their princess. before, she had worried constantly about whether she would be the one to face darkness and disaster, or if the royal family’s curse would be pushed on to her children and grandchildren. and she thought, hoped, that her fear would vanish once she was confronted with calamity, because at least then she would no longer be waiting and worrying – she’d have certainty.
but it didn’t. where old fears left, new ones arose; constant was the question of whether she handled it the best she could, whether she did the right thing by her people – how would her parents have handled it? delicate hands gripped the marble banister just the slightest bit tighter.
so lost in thought was she that the voice of her companion gave zelda a slight start; attention shifted to him, cerulean eyes wide, as though she’d forgotten he was there altogether. though as her gaze fell upon the kingdom’s hero – her hero – she felt at ease, expression softening as she considered his question.
“more often than i should,” the words came with a soft laugh as she leaned forward, looking back over the horizon.
“i often wonder how they are faring, since…since our wish. rebuilding a kingdom is no small task, and princess hilda has much to do to regain the trust of her people after what her ancestors did… …i’d like to see, just so i may know for sure whether things are going well, and so–”
a pause as she cast a conspiratorial glance around – it was only herself and link on the balcony; a guard hovered near the door, as they often did, but out of earshot.
still, she whispered, “i have been researching magics to see if i – we, if you’d like – might be able to visit someday…if only very briefly.”
𝒯he Hylian heavens are painted in a resplendent splash of vibrant hues as the sun submerges into the skyline﹒Her Majesty’s distraught contemplative expression is cloaked in the warm orange glow as sunspots dance about her glittery aquamarine eyes﹒Link wonders﹐not for the first nor the last time﹐what thoughts they hold﹒They stand within mere feet of each other﹐but even without a magic bracelet that reeks like soaked mutt﹐Link feels worlds between them﹒

𝒜ll at once﹐he feels selfish for looping her into his miseries in this joyous time of conviviality﹒He﹐who has become entitled to her world﹐her secrets﹐the sight of her unsettled expression all by rite of destiny… can’t help but feel he’s trespassing where he doesn’t belong﹒

It was rare to find anyone out in the Trilby Highlands, and even rarer still that they’d be approaching from the north– the woods. The young boy stopped in his tracks as he was called, sorting through the undue politeness he was addressed with and the surreal appearance of this stranger.
Was he a long-lost relative?
After snapping out of his stupor, Link sought to answer the call for help and reached for his map that he kept under his shield. In place of words that he could not speak, he pointed to the map, identifying a spot in the north Trilby Highlands approximately where they stood. Castle Town was a short walk further south, but otherwise, the map indicated it was practically the middle of nowhere.
𝒩ot unlike himself﹐this fellow voyager carried upon him all the proper adventuring essentials﹐unsheathing & procuring a handy map from the interior of his shield. An instinctual sigh of relief slid past Link’s lips that quickly morphed into a pensive frown once he peered down onto it.Inky letters were scrawled across the tarnished manila parchment﹐yet although identical to his own Hylian vernacular﹐he couldn’t decipher them for the life of him.
𝒯hick brows scrunched together in perplexity as Link reeled back﹐looking all about.Behind him was the way he came through the misty brush & ahead of him... Link hadn’t the faintest clue. The panic was beginning to take shape on his countenance as Link took another startled step back﹐wondering just what in the world his journeying had got him into this time.
❝ 𝓘 … 𝓘 can’t read this.I’d only ventured northward‚ up and past the Village & into the Lost Woods.I admit I might’ve wandered a bit beyond the borders of familiarity in all my exploration … but I get this foreboding feeling like… I’ve wandered further than I ever imagined possible … ❞

a sheepish hand reached to scratch at the back of his neck, awkward smile belying that that that was exactly what he was going to ask. the world around him was far from the one he knew, and the only way to find his way back would be to ‒ well, seek a place to stay for now, so he could meet with locals and gain his bearings.
there were similarities between himself and the stranger, similarities that were unsettling, and there was something at the back of his mind, something tickling at his nose and his ears and the wolfish instincts laying dormant in his human body. he was displaced. out of time. somewhere he shouldn’t have been. it felt senseless, ridiculous, and not at all like his first foray into a world in which he didn’t belong. at least then, he’d been there to free them of the curse their false king had beset them with.
“ uh ‒ yeah, actually. if you wouldn’t mind helping me find someplace, i’d really appreciate it. ”

𝒯he plucky youngster swiftly lifted a single hand to gesture plainly towards an unassuming cottage outcropped in the distance.Upon closer observation﹐the meager home was of crackled stone slab walls accented by earthy log trim with a teensy overrun garden out front that stood guarded over by a clearly handmade scrappy ‘ole scarecrow.

𝒯here is a serene peacefulness to the grassy plains &rolling hillsides of Hyrule these days﹐for no longer do unremarkable bushels of foliage house monstrous inhabitants. The foul beasts had been vanquished by his blade﹐&the tranquil Hyrule Link had always known &called home had returned to him﹐no longer tainted &tarnished by Yuga &his croonies .Although Link had restored harmony to Hyrule﹐he could not say the same for himself.
𝐸verything happened so quickly! One minute Link was clumsily clutching the Captain’s ‘borrowed’ sword﹐the next﹐drilling an arrow of pure light through Yuga’s skull. In the blinding rush of all that transpired﹐so much went unsaid.Sometimes Link could still feel the adrenaline-charged whirlwind surging through him﹐only to blink &recall it passed him by.
𝒫erhaps the only one who could understand &share in his woes in this time of merry celebration was the one who joined him at his side atop the castle’s balcony.
