Dugong (Dugong dugon) Mouth
Dugongs are one of the four extant species of the order Sirenia. The other three Sirenia are the manatees. They’re native to the Indo-Pacific coastlines, and unlike manatees, do not come inland to freshwater estuaries. They do, however, come very close to shore, especially when birthing. Dugongs are much more wary of humans than manatees are, and do not approach them in the wild.
All sirens are completely herbivorous. The gum pads in their mouths allow them to pluck seagrass - root and all - from the sea beds, and the bristles inside their mouth keep it from slipping out as they slurp it down. For reasons unknown, dugongs don’t like to eat seagrass from lush grass beds. They prefer sparse growth beds, instead.

The great crested newt, also known as the warty newt (Triturus cristatus), looks like a tiny aquatic dinosaur due to the crest on its back that males develop during the breeding season. This species lives mostly on land, but spends between three and five months of the year in lakes, ponds, and ditches. They are widespread throughout Europe, but in a number of places their habitats have been drained, leading to a decline in numbers.

Solar Eruptions - A Coronal Mass Ejection
The swirling inner layers of our sun cause charged particles to generate magnetic fields. As charges accumulate on the surface, magnetic field lines readjust themselves and release huge quantities of matter and electromagnetic radiation into space. This particular Mass Ejection is traveling at over 900 miles per second and has an energy level equivalent to 160,000,000,000 megatons of TNT.

Raising the Flag over Iwo Jima
Days into the Battle of Iwo Jima, the commanding peak of Mount Suribachi was captured on February 23, 1945. In what would become of the most iconic images from World War II, five U.S. Marines, Harlon Block, Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, Franklin Sousley, Michael Strank, and U.S. Navy Corpsman John Bradley, raised this flag, replacing a smaller flag.

The Whirlpool Galaxy - Sparkling with X-Rays
Nearly a million seconds of observing time with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has revealed a spiral galaxy similar to the Milky Way glittering with hundreds of X-ray points of light.
This galaxy’s official name is Messier 51 (M51) or NGC 5194, but it often goes by its nickname of the “Whirlpool Galaxy.” Like the Milky Way, the Whirlpool is a spiral galaxy with spectacular arms of stars and dust. M51 is located about 30 million light years from Earth, and its face-on orientation to Earth gives us a perspective that we can never get of our own spiral galactic home.
By using Chandra, astronomers can peer into the Whirlpool to uncover things that can only be detected in X-rays. In this new composite image, Chandra data are shown in purple. Optical data from the Hubble Space Telescope are red, green, and blue.

The skull of the Chinese Water Deer is one of the most iconic skulls out there.
Like many small Asian deer species, it does not have antlers. Instead the males fight each other with their extremely sharp tusks, slashing at rivals with downward head swings.
When not actively shanking others, the tusks can be folded back slightly., so they don’t interfere with eating.

A lot of people have been mislead by a post that talks about the “lumpy” Earth, and unfortunately it seems that people genuinely believe the Earth is this shape. As one person pointed out, we have images of the Earth from space, and while it would be disingenuous to refer to it as a perfect sphere, it very much is spherical. A rudimentary reverse Google image search tells me that the image in the misleading post is a simulation of the Earth without water… which is just plain wrong.
In fact, the shape you’re seeing is a geoid, which is a simulation of what Earth would look like if you neglected the influence of anything other than rotation and gravity. A geoid is a dynamic equipotential surface, which means that every point on the surface has the same gravitational potential.
Since it was recently NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day, this seems like a good opportunity to talk about a geoid that is something more than a context-less gif: the Potsdam Gravity Potato, pictured above. It’s the result of efforts by a group at Helmholtz Centre Potsdam to create a highly detailed map of the Earth’s gravitational field. Like in a heat map, red elevated levels indicate stronger gravitational effects, and depressed blue levels indicate that they’re lower. The potato-like shape occurs due to the Earth’s uneven gravitational field. This is why high places such as the Himalayas coincide with local maxima on the geoid—but of course not all maxima and minima are the result of noticeable physical features; the Earth has inhomogeneous variations in its density, which account for much of the gravitational difference.

Each fall, millions of North American monarch butterflies migrate to California and Mexico for winter. They make a massive journey (up to 4,830 kilometers/3,000 miles) and use the sun to ensure that they stay on course. On cloudy days Earth’s magnetic field as a kind of backup navigational system.
