How Does Cara Come Up With The Designs?

Cara Brown has a keen eye and a constant yearning to create beautiful objects that bring the new and the old together. Her brands represent different mediums for bespoke, one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story and carry on a legacy. She features both her Found Object and Horse Brass jewelry lines on this site along with her new passion project, LifeJacketTM, which captures the chapters of your life on hand-selected, vintage tweed jackets.

The Story Behind Cara Brown Designs:

After graduating from Vanderbilt University, Cara and a partner began making Christmas ornaments out of antique jewelry and beads procured from estate sales. Their jeweled balls found their way into local boutiques in Fort Worth, TX and were eventually distributed by Neiman Marcus.

Eighteen years later, after raising three children in her 18th century New Jersey farmhouse, Cara has introduced a new line of necklaces that are entirely rooted in her history. Each piece is handcrafted, combining unique found objects and semi-precious or antique beads to create one-of-a-kind works of art that are to be worn and distinguish you in your “everyday uniform.”

Within a year of production, Barneys NYC on Madison Ave picked up her two lines. Today, you can find them at various Saks 5th Ave locations and luxury boutiques throughout the country.

Restaurant Takeout and/or Delivery As of this week, local restaurants are only able to offer take-out / delivery. Some restaurants & markets are open and offering special takeout packages and/or curbside delivery options, just call your favorite spot and see what they've got planned.  Be sure not to go inside local businesses if you're feeling unwell, local businesses are doing an amazing job cleaning like crazy to keep things safe. Also, consider using cards instead of cash and using hand sanitizer before and after each transaction.

Retail Offering Free Shipping, Delivery, and/or Virtual Styling A couple of really amazing ways to help keep local businesses afloat (and treat yourself at the same time) are:1) Shopping local online. So many local businesses have amazing e-commerce sites, just google your favorite shops and make a few purchases, just like you would have done in real life. Want to make sure your favorite shops are still there when the summer hits? Just google, click, and add-to-cart. 2) Purchasing gift cards. Many local stores and restaurants are offering standard gift cards. You can save them for gifts or keep as a treat for yourself when all this mayhem is over. Many local businesses operate on such small margins that they're often a few gift cards away from paying their bills. It's a really wonderful way to reach out and makes a huge difference in our neighbor's lives.

Landscaping, Yard Spring Cleanup, and/or Firewood Delivery

Unfortunately, we just don't know how long this will all last, but what we do know is that spring is coming, and there's nothing healthier than getting outdoors at our own homes. It's a wonderful time to distract ourselves by thinking about some landscape changes, maybe plan a big organic veggie garden to keep your family healthy. You’re housebound, there’s beautiful Spring-like weather, no events, and you’re stressed, which means there’s never been a better time to garden. We suggest digging in at Or’ the Whale, the new Main Street hang out! Their food is delicious and their staff makes you feel at home! They have everything from brunch to dinner and something for every taste bud! 

The Nautilus is another favorite that is still open this Valentine’s Day! Enjoy some Asian cuisine with a signature cocktail! What better way to say I love you than with a shared meal like the Whole Roast Peking Duck or the Cast Iron Roasted 30 oz. Grass-Fed Rib Eye.

OUR WINTER LOVES

This winter, we’re looking forward to a much-needed detox from the late nights, cocktails and many sweet treats while bundling up by the fire awaiting each New England storm. In pursuit of mindfulness and wellness, here’s what we’re loving and looking forward to for Winter 2020. 

Getting Active | A new year (or decade) is a perfect time to get active and start making new habits. Take advantage of that New Year momentum and invest in a personal trainer or a local gym membership! 

Going Green | There are so many different ways that you can go green this year. Whether you’re buying a new house from J Pepper Frazier or just transitioning your daily coffee routine with a reusable mug.  

Hydrating | While many people are doing Dry January, we are making a mindful effort to swap cocktails for H2O - and yes, we’re using this as an excuse to buy a new water bottle from The Haul Over. 

Everything in Moderation | It’s all about moderation and we love the idea of walking conservation land trails and then heading to town for a drink and app!

We can’t believe it’s already 2020, but we also couldn’t more excited! We’re prepping for Volume 2 and the warmer days ahead of us! Meanwhile, on Nantucket, there are a few things you should keep in mind, no matter where you are in the world.

NHA’s Festival of Trees

The Festival of Trees is the NHA’s highly anticipated holiday tradition that kicks off the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce’s Stroll weekend and transforms the Whaling Museum into a festive winter wonderland for the entire month of December! This event features community-crafted trees designed by local merchants, nonprofit organizations, artists, and children.

"A Nantucket Christmas Carol" by White Heron Theatre

White Heron Theatre presents 'A Nantucket Christmas Carol,' opening Thanksgiving Day and continuing through December 14th. This delightful new play by Mark Shanahan premiered in 2018 at White Heron Theatre, as an adaptation of the Charles Dickens holiday classic. Music, drama and quick-change artistry help tell the story of whaling captain Ebenezer Scrooge in this beloved Nantucket holiday favorite.

What better time to show our gratitude for all the things that Nantucket is to all of us, then as we truly bring in the holiday season with Thanksgiving! From shopping and food, to fun and fellowship, our island has so much to offer each of us. And if you have friends and family visiting from afar, take a break from the holiday table and the football to introduce them to our beautiful island. They will be amazed and it’s only getting better every single day…

Meet: Meet the local artists on island and spend the evening with the community giving back! On Monday, November 11, 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Cisco Brewery will be the Empty Bowls Project! This fun and meaningful event help to raise money for two local non-profits doing amazing work in our community and beyond...The Nantucket Food Pantry and Nantucket Island's Safe Harbor for Animals. There will be a selection of handmade bowls by local students, teachers, and professional potters that will be available for purchase. Once you purchase your bowl, they will fill it with a delicious seasonal soup, served with homemade bread, and you are welcome to enjoy your meal in a lively and fun community setting. 

Visit: The 27th annual fundraiser for the Marla Ceely Lamb Cancer Travel Fund is coming to Faregrounds on Friday, November 15th from 5-10pm. Bring your family and friends of all ages and check out the Raffles, Hors d’oeurvres and the silent and live auction while you enjoy the sounds of Nantucket’s own Shepcats. The Marla Ceely Lamb Cancer Fund is a non-profit where all funds are used to offset travel expenses incurred while receiving cancer treatments off-island…truly for the island, from the island to the island.
