I love early internet and personal computing history so much that I've been working on a story inspired by the era, and finally got around to drawing these guys in my head. Mike:

Burnt out, yes-man, software engineer for tech giant Telecorp. Never quite climbed his way to the top, and second-guessing his career choices in the midst of yet another looming deadline. 

His life’s work, Aetherlink, was released to the public far too early- while it had the potential to change human-digital connection forever, the risks were never properly assessed. 

The machine had to sustain itself somehow, and there have been rumblings of some disappearances in the city, raising suspicion about the true nature of Telecorp’s founding. Mike resigned and is desperately trying to stop the spread of the monster he created. 

Absolutely loves instant black coffee (he’s a masochist). Mike is dating Rosie. Rosie:

Rosie lives life at her own pace. She works as a secretary for tech giant Telecorp, but her talent for hacking easily qualifies her for a position on one of the development teams. Instead, she spends her evenings and weekends down at the internet cafe’s lesser-known hacker’s club, inadvertently becoming the leader of something much bigger- a city-wide cyber crime investigation. 

Rosie loves driving her motorbike, walking down by the harbour and listening to Duran Duran.   Rosie is dating Mike, and often has to stop him from working too much overtime.

i’ve warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.

as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it’s just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we’re small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, “i’m not here to hurt you. here’s something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we’re on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i’m being light-hearted and non-threatening right now.”

small talk isn’t to get to know a person. it’s just a greeting to affirm you’re buddies in the universe.

i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it.

Thankful for the opportunity to illustrate the Maractite pets for The Curse of Maraqua TCG expansion! The patterns on these pets were challenging but I feel they turned out super pretty. Can't wait for this release!
