OCD recovery is cosmically unfair because it's the only disorder i know of where the treatment is 'okay! now make yourself feel worse'
whoever first pointed out that ilya americanises his accent around other people but not around shane i owe you my fucking life
also the idea of like when its just the two of them ilya can like just slip back into the more comfortable rudimentary accent he had at the start of their relationship :’) and that in itself being nostalgic for shane :’)
this would also be linguistically accurate!
i speak english the most in day to day life and also think in english sometimes. my accent in english is americanized, pretty indistinguishable from a native (excluding sets of certain phonemes like /rl/) .
but if i’m really tired or spending time just around my wife (with whom i speak english), i sometimes switch to what i call ‘lazy english’.
what this usually consists of is i allow myself to speak english with the russian /r/ phoneme that is more natural for me, i drop articles, replace continuous and future tense with simple present, use the ‘….,yes?’ construct, avoid contractions (bc the verb ‘to be’ is dropped/implied in russian, so contractions aren’t always natural)
for example, when i’m in ‘lazy english’ mode, this is how my speech varies:
‘i’m making the bed’ = ‘i make bed’.
‘you’ll help me later, right?’ = ‘you help me later, yes?’ (for this one, in russian, the same phrasal construct ends with the word ‘yes’ instead of the word ‘right’)
‘can you give me a tissue?’ = can you give me tissue?’
‘where’s the pen? do you have it?’ = ‘where is pen? you have?’
if you pay attention, you’ll notice that a lot of these patterns also occur in ilya’s speech, especially earlier on. that’s why i’m particularly impressed with the writing of his dialogue — it doesn’t come across as stereotyping/caricatural because the way he speaks english is consistent with russian linguistic/grammatical rules. this is often how russian-speaking people speak english when it is their second language and they’re still learning.
i like to imagine ilya reverting to ‘lazy english’ or speaking in a similar manner to me around shane. it is linguistically consistent and a sign of comfort/deep familiarity with the person.
The next layer of linguistic accuracy would be for Shane to start occasionally modulating down into a similar "lazy english" that's reflective of Ilya's style. I forget the technical term for this, but it's a legit thing in linguistics -- if there's someone you love/admire/respect and you spend a lot of time with them, you unconsciously start picking up and mirroring a couple aspects of their idiolect (like a dialect but rather than being spoken by a group, it is a single person's unique linguistic fingerprint), whether that's gestures, vocabulary, or speech patterns.
So when Ilya says something like, "Where is pen? You have?" then over time Shane's response might naturally shift towards, "Yes, I have."
he already does this!!!
you still want?

As a 20-something woman, I get a lot of targeted ads for egg donation and my god do they really make something as serious as selling your genetic material to potentially make a human person who may one day grow up to want to meet you after years of feeling lost and without an identity seem like a fun thing to do for vacation money
ooomg do you remember me we were created in the same unethical lab! yeah i was like 2 green tubes down from you! i knew you looked familiar

spent my breaks today watching old 1d interviews and like. not one question answered in those 5 years they were together they had the training and psychological resilience of KGBs agent but over mundane shit like ‘what is this song about’. waterboarding could not extract that information from Niall’s mouth.
absolute best 1d question dodging tactic though was them all taking the world’s most awkward beat then louis saying something vaguely bitchy yet completely unintelligible in the strongest doncaster accent to grace the mortal ear (taking a minimum of 45 seconds for the human brain to decode), meanwhile zayn’s presence would simply be leaving the room in every metaphysical shape and form, and niall would be laughing in the back for no reason. lynchian. I think that’s the tactic the CIA used to convince witnesses they were having a stroke.
“a movie that feels like a movie” sorry that was just his instinctive winter soldier training you wouldn’t understand
remember when liam came home one day and his turtle was just missing a foot
zayn saved the band by leaving.
let's be honest. he took the hit when he left. he lost so many of his fans then. but you know what he did?
he showed the boys that there was life after one direction.
he showed them that the hell they were enduring was escapable. that they could make it out and still sing and write songs and be happy.
if they'd really been as happy as they seemed to us, they would've come back after the hiatus. they promised us 18 months. its been 9 years.
im sure they loved us with all their hearts. that they enjoyed their time together as a band, as brothers. however, they were exploited and taken advantage of every step of the way.
now, liam's passing is the fucking culmination of the hell they endured. you can't argue with me that the liam of 2011 was SO SO FULL OF LIFE. he had so much promise. you just knew this boy was gonna go places.
but somehow, along the way, his light dimmed. that wasn't the liam we knew. we all subconsiously could see it. that liam hurt so much that he hurt a lot of people. that liam could've done better. that liam should've been given the chance to make amends.
but the young boy that was so full of life, he didnt deserve any of this. he deserved to have been kept safe and away from the shit that could destroy him.
the boys should have been protected and maybe, just maybe, we wouldn't have to endure this devastating loss. maybe, just maybe, liam would still be alive.
i'd take an unending hiatus over this loss any day.
all the older boybands & their members (mcfly, busted, nsync, backstreet boys, take that & robbie) posting tributes is also really doing me in. like there is no precedent for this, so many of these bands had a member or two who struggled hard with addiction but they are still here and the shock in their statements is palpable. this was just never supposed to happen, these boys were supposed to get to grow old together
I don’t understand why the hotel didn’t call an ambulance, the first time Liam came down acting erratic and passing out/convulsing. that’s clearly a medical issue?? like I know it was drug and alcohol induced but that’s still a medical issue and they should have called whatever the Argentina equivalent of 911 is. I wonder if they would have handled it differently if he had been sober and was still passing out/acting strange. it makes me think it’s some stigma thing surrounding substance abuse. so sad and tragic and could have been prevented in many different ways
I agree; both that they should have handled it SO differently (and treated it as the medical issue it clearly was at that point) and that the stigma of intoxication was absolutely why they didn't. It's so fucking sad.
child stars dying young directly or indirectly as a result of fame-related trauma is just so especially sad. for me it’s the tragedy of how kids don’t really know what they’re signing up for when they ask to be famous, especially back in 2008. liam’s mistakes, addiction, and bad decisions, are all so inarguably tied into his career and the carelessness of the entertainment industry. the 31 year old man that just died is the same 16yo boy that was given drugs and alcohol to keep him quiet while he was being overworked and exploited. corey haim, river phoenix, judy garland, and so many more. you can think what you want about liam and have your own opinions, but don’t lose sight of the larger picture that he was a victim of.
recently when im tempted to say 'i'm gonna kill myself' i try to correct it into saying "im gonna walk into the river and become a trout" or some other form of that. this is my new thing
btw this has graduated into me just saying "the trout population will be affected" and then not elaborating
What I think a lot of people are grieving now is the future he lost. He had a chance to heal, to make amends, to right the ship. I think we all wanted to see that. He gave a lot of people great moments in their lives and he endured a lot. He was fighting hard for his own life. It is a deep sorrow that his struggle is over.
vile actions have been done. words have been said that can never be taken back. victims have been abused. lives have been altered due to toxic behaviors and addiction. so much hurt has been spread.
but no one should die young. no one should grow up fatherless. no parent should have to bury their own child. no one should be searching for peace for so long after growing up in a system designed for them to fail only to have their life end so tragically in pursuit of that peace. no one.
seeing so many people who haven’t been here for a while . we’re all family and will always be . what we got to experience is rare and precious . hope time will allow us to look back at it with joy and peace again . hugging all of you tight
