The Dance of Life. Why Dance Music dominates the Pop Music charts.
Why Dance Music dominates the Pop Charts.
In case you haven’t noticed, Dance Music currently dominates the Pop Music Charts. Artists like Pitbull, Chris Brown, and Christina Aguilara are heating up your local airwaves with their modern day fusion of House Music and Hip Hop.
I have to admit that it’s been quite sometime since I listened to Dance Music. Having been born in the 1970’s, I was exposed to various periods of Dance dominating the Pop scene. From Disco to Freestyle, it was a big part of my childhood. After entering my college years, I decided to move on to genres with more substantive lyrical content. I was a bit tired of listening to yet another Dance song about love. I was quickly swayed over to Rock music after being exposed to groups like Nirvana and Dave Matthews Band.
I now have two children, one of which is a “tween”. Though I was reluctant at first, I started listening to their favorite pop songs with them. I was in for quite a shock… It’s really good!!
This ain’t your dad’s Dance Music. It’s evolved and quite substantive. It bears the mark of a generation who has faced adversity under a tough economy. It projects resiliency, optimism, and self-reflection. It says to the world that our youth has come of age. They have something to say and it comes in a powerful positive form.
Don’t take it from me, though. Judge for yourself. Here is an excerpt from the popular song “Tonight is the Night” from Outasight.
“I’ve been feeling real good, came a long way from misunderstood
Far away from the days where I wouldn’t wanna go home ‘cause I was afraid of the truth
See I was scared to admit that failing was in the back of my head Comes a point when lying no longer works so you have to stand up for how you want to live”.
Here is another example. This is an excerpt from One Republic’s song, “Good Life”.
“Sometimes there’s airplanes I can’ t jump out Sometimes there’s bulls##t that don’t work now
We are God of stories, but please tell me What there is to complain about?
When you’re happy like a fool, let it take you over When everything is out you gotta take it in”.
The sheer quality of lyrical content in today’s Pop Music scene is impressive, to say the least. This generation has managed to incorporate substance, while engaging in the great Dance of Life.
So, the next time you tune in to a Dance song on the radio, take a listen to the words. They will fill your heart with joy, while making you tap your feet.
