Why do parents always assume their kid is lazy when they get bad grades? Like maybe help your kids by talking to them, not punishing them. This is how I failed math and didn’t even know I had number dyslexia for years.
When my sister was in high school she struggled a LOT with math. Like I know a lot of people find it really difficult (myself included), but I mean she was really really bad at it. She has always been a very smart, creative and sensitive person, but math made no sense to her, to the point where passing seemed impossible.
I will always remember that twice a week, around the kitchen table, my sister would sit down with my dad for hours, and they would try to work out her math homework. I should mention that my dad is an artist, and art teacher. Truth be told I think he struggled with math just as much if not more then she did. But twice a week you could hear them downstairs, going back and forth, trying to figure it out together. Some nights would be smooth and easy, some nights I could hear them arguing from one floor up about factors or equations, not in anger but in mutual frustration.
I remember the day that she passed. My sister couldn’t wait until my dad’s school day ended, so she called him at work. She gleefully announced to him “I got a D-!”. We could hear him through the phone as he exclaimed “She got a D!” excitedly to his class. Still through the phone we heard his students clapping, laughing and whooping in congratulations. Seldom has a grade in our household been so celebrated.
Just thought a shitty picture like this should be accompanied by a story about a person’s parents who actually gave a shit about helping their kid instead of mocking and punishing them.

it never made sense to me for people to lay down on their backs while giving birth. you’d think that squatting/ crouching would be the way to let gravity help the baby make its way out
That’s the Yoruba way to do it! Lemme pull out one of my favorite quotes in this book that completely changed the way I view childbirth…
“Westernized hospitals have become en vogue for many parents, despite the facts that these facilities are breeding grounds for innumerable debilitating pathogens and that contemporary hospitals routinely mandate anti-African and anti-woman practices. However, by kneeling on the ground to give birth, as mothers do in traditional Yoruba society, the mother’s labor is aided by gravity, and she is able to work and move with her contractions rather than be immobilized by pain or numbed to her body’s and her child’s needs.
The posture she assumes when giving birth also magnifies her divinity and her Aje to the extent that whenever she assumes this posture to utter a curse or make a request after giving birth, the Earth and Cosmos will make her words manifest.”
- The Architects of Existence, Aje in Yoruba Cosmology, Ontology, and Orature by Teresa Washington, pg 72-73
I have given birth to two children, and I have to say being able to move around and let gravity assist with the birthing process helps so much with the pain
Ricki Lake made a documentary that uses this point to illuminate how the medical industry doesn’t center the interests of pregnant people or their babies! Its called the business of being born, and in it she provides historical context for why women are usually forced to give birth laying down and scrunched up (spoiler alert: this position is way easier for doctors). here’s the link for anyone interested! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWHyKlTsL6Q
thank you for this contribution
I remember reading that this became popular in the 1700/1800s, one because it was easier on the doctor- and by easier I mean CONVENIENT, not that they actually couldn’t do it with a woman kneeling, and two because European nobles/royalty were fucking weirdos who liked watching women give birth, there would literally be like a dozen people watching, and they couldn’t SEE it happening unless a woman was on her back, legs spread. So millions of hours of woman’s suffering is once again attributed to the sadistic voyuerism of white men, to no one’s surprise.
I wrote a paper about the history of hospitalization and this shit is in fact true.
Especially important to remember that when males started becoming the doctors delivering babies, women were not allowed to go to school or become doctors. so this further pushed women out of the birthing place and allowed for male doctors to do things like force women on their backs to deliver (I could go into how midwives started becoming associated with being “dumb” “dirty” “low class” immigrant women because they weren’t formally trained at schools and how that even further pushed away women from this space buuuuut that’s a discussion for another day……).
This position is called the lithotomy position, btw, and it has been noted to be one of the worst positions for delivery. It’s associated with negative maternal outcomes. But I mean really, think about it…. Laying on your back, gravity isn’t going to be there assisting the birth the same way it would in other, historically common, birthing positions.
Birthing stools, people. Birthing stools.
We do crap to humans that would be considered inhumane if we did it to livestock, like not putting the kid to the breast immediately. It’s ridiculous.

Go nuts, my friends.
this is my favorite art program. it’s *much* more intuitive than photoshop/gimp or corel paintshop, but it still has the full functionality of a digital art program (layers, brush stabilizer, etc.). it’s not overwhelming to start on like practically every other decent art program I’ve tried, you can just pick a brush and start drawing as if it were paper if you want. plus you can download extra brushes for free! and they publish free art tutorials pretty regularly
ANYONE looking for a free art program: worth looking into.
YALL I LOVE THIS PROGRAM, especially the ipad version!! and i’m psyched that i don’t have to pay $30 a year for it anymore!!!
A tip for blending when painting digitally: use a transition color! I quickly made this when my brother asked for art advice while I was working on a painting for my best friend. (I was watching a lot of makeup videos to pick out her gifts).
