Spoilers for dr chapter 5 WR! Very much a sleep-deprived rant about my thoughts on a particular new popular theory.
Kris and Noelle amalgam knight theory highkey pissing me off so bad. It's like. Worse than Rudy Knight to me. And Rudy Knight makes my blood boil, but that's a whole other post(which I have in fact made lmao).
Like, okay, yes, I see your evidence being that we do have preexisting knowledge of amalgams and that the knight being Kris and Noelle explains their parallel to Kris' poses and the fact it has antlers. Does it technically make sense for them to have glitched the game so hard they fused and teleported back in time somehow? I guess? If you squint real hard? Narratively though, it just Does Not Make Sense to me.
My first point: When you complete the ch5 WR, it says specifically "insert chapter 7, side B", implying there will in fact be a continuation of whatever happened there in the WR of Ch7. Why on earth would we be able to continue playing the game if Kris and Noelle have fused as the Knight. I suppose you could argue that they end up somewhere strange on the other side of the lake and then perhaps get rid of the soul and fuse or smth? But I just don't see how we go from point A to point B there. What would the point of the chapter 7 side B be if it was mostly just context to the Knight being Kris and Noelle, which we would presumably learn about in the normal route anyway?
Second point: Genuinely what does this add to the plot/characterization. This is the same reason I hate Rudy Knight. That theory pmo because it pushes Rudy's character into a role that is already filled in the story by Carol and Asgore (searching for Dess and being stuck in the past). If Rudy was the Knight, it really just makes his character do a 180 and then has him fill the role that would likely otherwise be filled by Carol. This ain't about that, but same idea for why I dislike Kris and Noelle amalgam Knight.
What does it add to their characters? Why would they be doing all the stuff the Knight does? What on earth would be the motivation for them to go around opening dark fountains and putting their past selves in danger? Why would WR Kris go along with this and start working with their past self and THE SOUL THAT PUT THEM THROUGH HELL?
Side note to point 2: Why tf would Kris be working with the Knight and opening dark fountains if the Knight is Literally Part Them From a World Where The Soul Is Evil. Like, them having the soul seems to be a part of the whole deal with the Knight/Carol based off the phone calls, so why would they agree to that if they see for themselves what the soul can do to them and Noelle? And on that note, why would CAROL be working with the soul when she presumably also has some connection to the Knight and would know in some capacity that the soul did this?? Ralsei also seems to be able to sense/know who created the dark world so he'd also likely know, at least partially, that the Knight was the result of the WR(which he is also aware of), but then he's still fine with Kris/the Soul and doesn't actively try to stop it beyond acting extra worried??? I could go on for several more paragraphs about all the reasons why it wouldn't make sense for the characters to be involved with the Knight/the Soul when the Knight being two teenagers fused together was explicitly the Soul's doing.
Third point: This would mean that the WR is completely canon and that it doesn't matter if you actually played it or even knew about it(which, like, I'm sure plenty of people don't know about the WR, not everyone is constantly involved in fandom, some of them are just playing through the game as it comes out casually and not thinking too hard about it), which kinda goes against the whole point of the WR? Like, it's meant to be the player seeing how much they can break the game and get the characters to go off-script. It's a callback to those old creepypastas/glitches you'd hear about through other kids at school and have to try yourself to know if it was real or not. It being canon to the game 100% of the time completely throws all that out the window. WR is supposed to be the route that points the accusatory finger right at you, the player, for doing this, even though you had plenty of chances to back out, just to see what happens. Making it canon would be like if, at the end of Undertale pacifist route, Flowey's actually revealed to be Frisk from a genocide route that's trying to cause the genocide to happen again. That would be ridiculous! Like yeah, Flowey is a parallel to Frisk/the player, but it's clear that he's not Literally Frisk from a Timeline the Player Fucked Up.
Idk, this is the rambles of a woman who should have gone to bed 3 hours ago and is probably far more mad than she otherwise would be. I just beg of people making theories to actually think about it beyond just "yes the evidence lines up" bc sometimes the evidence lines up, but if you actually think about The Implications for the Themes and Characters, it kind of falls apart...
I'm all for going wild with theories and headcanons, but I've seen so much about this one and people acting like it would be good if it was actually canon, and I'm here to say "man it's a good thing you guys aren't writing Deltarune". Like, I absolutely dig Kris and Noelle WR amalgam Knight for the horror aspects, and I'll admit that when I first saw it I was like "huh wait, I'm a DessKnight truther but I guess that could make sense?". Then I thought about it more, and, while I'm sure there's gonna be a ton of great fan content about the possibility, I really really really don't think it would actually be good for the story as a whole. Like I don't think there's a way to write it that wouldn't sacrifice either themes, plot, or character.
TLDR: idk man go wild with fan content, but acting like this theory is gonna be 100% true without considering all of the aspects of the story it brings into question annoys me. Like, every theory has some holes/unexplained bits, but this one feels like it brings up wayyyyyyyy more questions than it answers to me.
