Overview

Hello, we are the Turtle System! This is our blog for talking about serious and non-serious system stuff, our interests, and current events. Here are some quick facts about us:

Our body uses he/him and identifies as a man. We are fine with they/them if it encompasses the whole system.

We are 19 years old and a university student in the USA.

Aside from DID, we are also autistic. (And have lots of other stuff going on...)

We are bodily AAPI and trilingual.

Our asks and DMs are open to friendly interactions and questions about being a system! If you're new to interacting with systems, don't worry about using the "wrong" terminology around us. Just make it clear that you're approaching with an open mind! (˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶)

Interests

This is a broad generalization of the interests of various system members. (Many alters like specific types of these things.)

Science, history/anthropology, linguistics, art, and writing.

The Avengers (Marvel), Tolkien, Star Wars, and a handful of anime/manga.

Nintendo games, Stardew Valley, Minecraft, and The Sims 4.

Stances

This blog will never be a safe space for discrimination based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, etc. We condemn ideologies such as Neo-Nazism, pro-US imperialism, Zionism, white supremacy, TERFs, etc.

Systems come from trauma.

Well-researched self-diagnosis is valid.

Generative AI is a plague upon this earth.

What is armchair diagnosis?

"Armchair diagnosis" is a slang term describing when a non-professional (or, even a professional when speaking about someone they have never personally treated) decides to label/diagnose someone with a disorder or disordered attribute they have not been informed of being diagnosed with.

Because this blog is run by a system, a lot of our content centers armchair diagnosis in system spaces—but we do not ONLY focus on the prevalence in the system community.

Examples:

Calling someone "bipolar" when you really mean to call them "two-faced" is armchair diagnosis.

"My ex was a narcissist" is armchair diagnosis—specifically, if their ex does not have an NPD diagnosis. Bonus points if "narcissistic" is used in place of "abusive;" i.e. narcissistic abuse (THIS BLOG DOES NOT SUPPORT [DISORDER] ABUSE LANGUAGE).

Forced syscovery is a form of armchair diagnosis. In most cases, it is also a form of abuse.

Speculating on someone's health by attributing an illness to them, without knowing if they actually have that illness (e.g. "they would NOT stop talking about birds. They're probably autistic.")

Armchair diagnosis does occur with physical conditions as well, but it is most prevalent with psychological disorders. We can thank pop psychology for that!

(Disclaimer: "pop psychology" can refer to both modern psychology AND the glamorization of subjects in psychology due to pop culture. We use "pop psychology" in the latter context.)

"Oh god, I'm absolutely guilty of armchair diagnosis. I'm a terrible person."

Not exactly. You're part of a society that romanticizes mental health conditions. It's been normalized to use this language for SO much. I'm guilty of armchair diagnosis, myself. As much as I dislike that fact, it's something I've had to recognize in making this blog. Self-awareness goes hand-in-hand with spreading awareness.

You're only guilty of ignorance until you've taken the time to learn. Don't be too hard on yourself. If you've hurt someone via armchair diagnosis (ESPECIALLY if that armchair diagnosis directly caused harm (e.g. was a form of forced trauma recognition, such as forced syscovery)), and if you still have an opportunity to: apologies can go a long way. You can't undo the past, but you do have control over your present and future.

I feel like we don't talk anywhere near enough about the somatic symptoms of CDD's. Like everyone mentions them but... nowhere near as much in depth discussion. Especially vision related ones. My dissociation impacts my vision a lot and I just have to wait it out because there is no underlying cause. Sometimes things look grayed out/pale and foggy, sometimes my vision gets much blurrier than usual, sometimes I feel like I lose the contrast between the darkest dark and lightest light. And the motor function related ones, my dexterity suffers a lot; sometimes I can barely control my legs. I have literally woken up sore, achey, and bruised because of how hard I was clenching and unclenching in my sleep. Beyond headaches, I get tingly sensations and frequent stomach aches (alongside digestion problems), and there were so many days when I was a child that I'd be taken to the doctor and there would be nothing wrong with me that could be causing it. We have an alter who is perpetually cold - her mere presence causes constant chills and goosebumps. A protector is the opposite, she's always so angry that it gets warm.

We have intermittent eyesight problems that seem to depend on which parts are fronting or near front we have mysterious episodes of nauesa and vomiting that doctors can't explain and we also have a lot of random pains and strange body sensations that don't make sense. Each individual alter seems to have their own body temperature regulation, although I have not checked with a thermometer whether or not our actual physical temperature changes.

every now and then, one of us gets this creeping dread about something that we don’t even know happened to us. but it was way in the past, like when we were a toddler, so we don’t even know why it’s relevant anymore. there’s only one system member who concretely believes this happened, but it’s unclear if his memories are real or something else. I know that something is wrong, and maybe it’s good that we don’t remember considering how we already turned out, but something in me just wants to know. I want to know if it’s made up or not. I wish I could tell someone
