Curiosity killed the cat, satisfaction brought it back

It all began to unfold when police were searching for 24-year-old, Shannan Gilbert, a Craigslist escort who had disappeared in May 2010 after meeting a client by the name of Joseph Bewer near Oak Beach. Something had spooked Shannan and she fled his home, screaming. She made a phone call to 911 in which she exclaimed “They’re trying to kill me!” before begging one his his neighbours for help. Her driver, Michael Pak, had tried her to get back into his car but she refused. She carried on running away. From what, nobody knows for sure. The last time she was seen alive, she was running up the street, screaming and begging for help but to no avail.

The Suffolk County Police paid no attention to her disappearance due to the fact that she was an escort. It wasn’t until seven months later that they finally investigated the case and what they discovered, would shock the entire world - four bodies evenly spaced out along Ocean Parkway, wrapped in burlap, none of which were Shannan. They found the body of Maureen Brainard-Barnes who went missing three years earlier, Melissa Barthelemy who went missing in 2009, Megan Waterman who went missing a month after Shannan, and Amber Lynn Costello who went missing earlier in the year. The women were similar to Shannan in that they were all petite women in their 20′s and all worked as Craigslist escorts. They had all been strangled elsewhere and then dumped.

Over the next year, six more bodies, and body parts, were discovered around the same area of Gilgo and Oak Beach. Among the bodies was that of an Asian man wearing a dress and a young toddler, who is believed to be the child of one of the escort’s found. Five of the discovered victims, including the aforementioned three, still remain unidentified. Authorities believe that all ten bodies are the victim of one serial killer, who has become known as “The Long Island Serial Killer” and also commonly referred to as “The Gilgo Killer.”

On 13, December, 2011, the body of Shannan Gilbert, the woman who set off the investigation, was finally discovered. She was found nearby in a swamp. Authorities ruled her death as accidental, but many people, her mother included, do not share this view due to the fact that she fits the victim profile of the women who have been killed by this unidentified serial killer. She was also discovered in the same area as the other victims and this would not explain the terror and fear of something or someone that she experienced on the night of her disappearance.

Ten more bodies have been discovered in the same area but authorities have not linked them to The Long Island Serial Killer. It appears as though the area had been a dumping ground for serial killers for many years, including Joel Rifkin.

Similarities Between Killers 1/? ~ Melvin Rees and Gerard Schaefer

Both had a large collection of violent pornography and detective magazines. Rees plastered the walls of his residence with it as well as pictures of dead women. Schaefer kept huge stacks of catalogs and magazines that he would draw over to depict the models being bound and/or dead as well as morgue imagery. As detective magazines depict true crime, I believe Schaefer might have learned about Rees from there and emulated him in many ways.

Both had a misogynistic view of women. Beside the murders, Rees brutalized and raped at least four women. Schaefer believed all women to be “sluts” or “whores” and saw his crimes as merely what they had coming for them.  

Both cataloged their crimes and fantasies in diaries. Rees used a notebook and Schaefer wrote works of supposed ‘fiction’ that he would latter publish after his arrest in the book Killer Fiction.

In Killer Fiction, Schaefer created a self insert character he called The Sex Beast. It is the epithet that was given to Rees by the media during his killing spree.

Both committed acts of necrophilia on the bodies of their female victims. Schaefer commented “…fondle it and maybe even have coitus with it. I will notice the expression on the face, the position of the body, explore every nick and cranny of her, maybe mutilate her and delight in the smell of any urine or excrement she might have passed while hanging there”.

Both sought the humiliation of their victims. Rees forced his female victims to perform sex acts upon him before their deaths while they were bound. Schaefer would force his victims to consume laxatives and alcohol so they would defecate which Schaefer found arousing.

In a note recounting the death of his final victim Carroll Jackson, Rees wrote “…then tied and gagged, led her to place of execution and hung her. I was her master”. This is incredibly similar to Schaefer who was sexually excited by strangulation and the hanging of women which was a popular topic for him in Killer Fiction. “I explain to her I am going to hang her so she might as well cooperate… If i feel like it, sit down and entertain her with a bit of my conversation. Terrorize her. Give her my ideas of what she will look like while she is hanging there, fighting the rope that is slowly choking the life out of her. Make it as real as possible for her, so that she is petrified with fear. Make her know that she is going to die.”    

Both used the women’s own garments to torture them, specifically their stockings. Rees wrapped Jackson’s own pair around her throat forced her to perform oral sex on him. After which he strangled her to death with them. Schaefer commented that “nylon stockings are useful to tie hands and feet of the victim” and fantasied about gagging his victims with their own soiled underwear. 

When questioned on the morality of his crimes, Rees remarked  “you can’t say it’s wrong to kill. Only standards make it right or wrong”. Schaefer similarly said “you revel in violence: murder, war, execution, every manner of social disaster. Your TV and film industries thrive on it. You’re begging for a close-up look at murder - the real thing. And you dare criticize me?”

Neither were executed for their crimes. Rees died in prison from natural causes. Schaefer was murdered by fellow inmate Vincent Faustino Rivera.

On Halloween of 1979, the unidentified body of a young woman who had been sexually assaulted and then strangled was discovered in a culvert on Interstate 35, Texas. She appeared to be in her twenties and was naked except for a pair of orange socks - thus earning her the moniker “orange socks.” Years later, serial killer Henry Lee Lucas confessed to her murder. He claimed he picked her up as she was hitch hiking and that her name was either “Joanie” or “Judy.” Further investigation showed that Henry Lee Lucas was most likely working in Florida at the time of the murder - he was known to confess to murders that he did not commit. Her identity, and who killed her, still remains unsolved.
