everyone thinking luke missed the wedding bc he is a junkie vs luke getting sent away bc he is a junkie.
OLIVER JACKSON-COHEN Wonderland Magazine / 2012 › by Daniel Burdett
CARL
“ no, no. as i said, there’s been some kind of mistake. ” the words are quick to leave carl – first instinct is always to offer kindness. they look at the young man, lost and distraught, and he quickly averts his eyes. a lump in his throat, a tight feeling in their chest, a troubled frown on their features. carl knows better than to show these emotions at work. if only he were more like karl, this wouldn’t be so difficult.
he turns and gestures at the picknick table, set out a considerable distance from the gate. they chose that spot specifically because the heat there was at least somewhat comfortable – and the heat and humidity didn’t kill off the patch of grass and its flowers the table sits on.
“ would you like some tea? a cookie, perhaps? ”
A MISTAKE ? but the nightmare continues and hellfire burns steady . it’s the sulfur smell that confirms suspicions and yet, a glance back at the life he had led brings no surprise to this outcome . except —— he can’t do this; not without nellie, not without saying goodbye to his siblings one last time . but the kindness offered to him doesn’t stop the tears from spilling over and for a moment luke can’t even bear to look at the guardian and their empathy . ❝ no- thank you, but i just —— ❞
still, he finds himself perplexed, numbly following the other one but TEA wakes memory after memory and bile threatens to rise . with the shake of his head, he tries to banish the thought of abigale’s murder and his mother’s tea party before properly addressing the being in front of him .
❝ can i go home ? please ? ❞

𝖑𝖚𝖐𝖊 𝖈𝖗𝖆𝖎𝖓 ( @twinthng ) said: grownups want to fix things. when they can’t, it only fills them with shame, so they just look away
❝ listen kid -— let me just clarify for you now … grown ups will continue to disappoint you. forever, and ever and ever. best to just get used to the feeling now and not expect much else down the road. ❞
it’s a child’s innocence, the never ending naivety that sits behind big eyes as he still waits for the headlights to come and bring his mommy back to him . there is a disconnect there, the wound still fresh but he can’t lose the hope just yet . ( not the way his father had made a promise and is too ashamed now to admit his failure . ) ❝ she is gonna come home, dad said he’s going back for her ! ❞
nightmare (allen grossman, 1977) + luke crain of the haunting of hill house (dir. mike flanagan, 2018)
MERCY SOLIDAD
she could have sworn this place was empty when she got here. she must have missed the pantry stocked with nonperishables, things that wouldn’t be TOO MISSED if there were anyone to claim them — she only takes a can of diced peaches anyway, stirring them with a spoon until her appetite gives way to them, but she jolts in her seat at the silhouette she suddenly notices observing her from the doorway.
❝ hi, ❞ she speaks softly once she can feel her throat again. a little boy, in such a big, empty house ? ❝ what are you doing here ? ❞
the pitter patter of tiny feet hitting the wooden floor follows him around, it’s not too loud, doesn’t alarm some of the other monsters hidden in the shadows but the intruder still notices . she is older than shirley, maybe even older than steven but too young regardless . eyes look up at her through thick lenses and easily notice the absence of his parents even though he has come to expect them here . ( don’t talk to strangers, his mother’s voice echoes in his memory ) but luke is too friendly a boy, too curious despite knowing the horrors this house holds .
❝ just got hungry . ❞ shifting his weight from side to side, little pajamas cling to his frame and paint the look of a sleepy child . clearly unsure, he doesn’t step closer into the room . ❝ why are you in our kitchen ? and why are you all alone ? ❞
Well, my sister kinda told me to. No, not really. She…we’re kind of in each other’s heads. It’s been like that since we were kids. It’s a twin thing.
