Master of the ensemble, Peruvanam Kuttan Marar. The history of Kerala’s indigenous music unravels the real-life story of many eminent artistes whose sacred mission was the preservation and promotion of melam. Most of them had a hand-to-mouth existence. Hailing from a family that belonged to a community linked to percussion in temples, Kuttan Marar grew up listening to and participating in a host of liturgical practices associated with indigenous percussion instruments. Apart from his father, Peruvanam Appu Marar, he had his training on the chenda under the renowned guru Kumarapuram Appu Marar. Those who listened to the endless repetitions of vocal music or drums in the temples were guided more by devotion than by an aesthetic propensity. Such an ambience instilled in Kuttan a deep sense of obligation towards various genres of temple music unmindful of any feedback from the audience. Kuttan has successfully pushed the boundaries of the melam by making it accessible to temples in south Kerala and in the cultural festivities held outside India, especially in West Asia. Notable recognitions Kuttan has won so far include Padmashri, Pallavoor Appu Marar Puraskaram instituted by the Government of Kerala, fellowship from the Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Akademi and several other honours from different private organisations. Tyndis Zamorins Trail, Calicut. Breathe life into the past as you go on a heritage wall along with Tyndis storyteller through the royal avenue of Valiyangadi (big bazaar) – one of the oldest and the busiest commercial streets in Kerala, located very close to Calicut railway station. This centuries-old wholesale market had propped up next to the harbour during the times of spice trade, stretching all the way to Palayam where the Samoothiri (Zamorin was the hereditary monarch of the kingdom) had their military cantonment. All the travelogues written in those times, talk high about Zamorin of Calicut and the fair practices at the port during their reign. Every merchant could dock their ship safely at this harbour and trade their goods in the flourishing Valiyangadi as long as they paid the stipulated amount as duty at the port. #calicut #valiyangadi #valiyangadicalicut #keralagram #kerala #kerala360 #keralatourism #incredibleindia #streetphotography #streets #market #heritage #history #zamorinsTrail #keralatour #responsibletourism #tyndistours #tyndis #tyndisheritage #keralaattraction #kochigram #foodtour #storytelling #stayhome #staysafe #indianheritage #indiatourism #spicetrail (at Valiyangadi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CADIfZyjd4M/?igshid=188ass5xp4fvj

Matrei Dei (‘Mater Dei’ is Latin for ‘Mother of God’) aka Valiyapalli in Kozhikode. Located close to #beach Road, this church is locally known as Valiyapally and is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic congregation in Malabar. This church has historical significance that goes back to 1513 when the Portuguese entered into a treaty with the Zamorins. In fact it is the Portuguese who built a factory here and also a church, dedicated to Virgin Mary of Immaculate Conception. The church was called Matrei Dei (‘Mater Dei’ is Latin for ‘Mother of God’) and signalled a new era for the Catholic congregation of Calicut Diocese. The church has been renovated in 1599 and 1724. It was in 1923 that the church became the Cathedral of the Diocese of Calicut. The Gothic Cathedral was designed by Italian architects and the curved arches on the doors and windows have Italian influences. The neo-Roman architectural style is evident in the façade flanked by lofty square towers. The church wall has as a 200-year-old portrait of St. Mary which is a big draw. Designed by Italian architects, this ancient shrine is a tribute to Italian know-how and the skill of Indian craftsmen. #throwback ! #architecturelovers #architecturephotography #architecture #church #sundaymass #cathedral #kozhikodebeach #kozhikoden #kozhikode #calicut #calicuttourism #kerala #keralagram #kerala360 #indianheritage #indianhistory #keralatourism #stayhome #storytelling #responsibletourism #incredibleindia #tyndistours #tyndis #motherofgod #motherofgodchurch (at Mother of God Cathedral Church) https://www.instagram.com/p/B__4xPVDHgS/?igshid=9pi4e92pki45
Zamorin's trail by Tyndis ! Mishkal Mosque in Kuttichira, is one of the oldest mosques in the city. This four storeyed structure supported by wooden pillars proudly proclaims the architectural splendour of yester years. In 1510 the Portuguese burnt down some parts of it, but the charred portions still remain. The mosque is named after the rich trader who built it. We must resolve to take working peoples' dignity to greater heights. Perhaps as never before, this year we recognize essential workers keeping our societies functioning. For a Keralite, the very word Theyyam brings forth a charming and beautiful picture. However, for the people of North Malabar, Theyyam is an emotion with multiple word meanings. Beypore Circuit Tour By Tyndis ! Beypore is an ancient port town and a locality town in Kozhikode, Kerala, India. The place was formerly known as Vaypura / Vadaparappanad. Tippu Sultan, ruler of Mysorr, named the town "Sultan Pattanam". There is a marina and a beach while Beypore port is one of the oldest ports in Kerala, which historically traded with the Middle East. Beypore is noted for building wooden ships, known as urus in the Malayalam language. These ships were usually bought by Arab merchants for trading and fishing but are now used as tourist ships. According to Captain Iwata, founder member of the Association of Sumerian ships in Japan, Sumerian ships might have been built in Beypore. There is evidence to prove that Beypore had direct trade links with Mesopotamia and was a prominent link on the maritime silk route. Tasara, Centre for Creative Weaving, is lost in the small streets of Naduvattom near Beypore. Tyndis Beypore circuit tour helps you to understand every bit of heritage, history and flavors of Beypore.
