okay yeah it’s a bit unfair that starkid has a very large following compared to some of the other shows nominated, and I’m sure the other productions were wonderful and designed beautifully

but like literally why are you criticizing the sk designers? as an up-and-coming scenic designer I REALLY enjoyed corey’s design for tgwdlm. okay yeah it’s a single set but it was used so well in collaboration with sarah’s lighting design (which I also loved!!! also I could go on and on about the isolation on the wall and the color choices but now is not the time)! I continue to find things I love about it. you don’t have to like it, but having a great design doesn’t mean it has to be complex and full of spectacle and ridiculously and minutely detailed

the same goes for june’s costume design which.... if it doesn’t look wrong, if it looks real, means she did her job VERY WELL. that’s like.. the whole goal in costume design for a modern show. And I for one wouldn’t even stop there with that description of the costumes because I VERY much am obsessed with them. again I could go on and on and maybe I will in a separate post but I just love her work on this show. costume design is SO interesting and june did SO WELL on tgwdlm imo

once again, good =/= spectacle (not that spectacle isn’t good, but it’s not NECESSARY for a good design/show)

I am so passionate about theatrical design please do not get me started

again, stinks that starkid has so much support compared to some of the other productions on the list when it comes to those involved, and I would love to support the other productions had I seen them and knew what they looked/sounded like (because again I love theatrical design and people deserve credit for their hard work on creating beautiful shows!!!), but the way to express that sentiment is not by bashing the design work produced by starkid

the exact same idea could be placed on the performers, but I don’t see anyone doing that because it would be rude, so why disrespect the designers like that?

real talk though, the best scene is theatre history is when emma is running across the stage in horror, screaming and on the verge of tears, trying to escape the hivemind only to run through back stage and back and being slammed with the realization that she is not in fact in a hospital as the scene described but in a theatre on stage about to be killed in front of a live audience who will not help her but are in fact laughing at her

Now that the decade is almost over, can we talk about how Starkid redefined musical theatre in the 2010's? Like, yeah sure, shows like Hamilton and Dear Even Hansen made broadway musicals mainstream, but Starkid consistently gave us free recordings of their top quality shows, shows which also changed the game (Twisted when it comes to parodies, Black Friday horror musicals, audience interactions and acknowledgement in almost every show, the way they function based on funds from the fans, etc.) I just want to say, from the bottom of me heart, thank you Team Starkid
