Lucy: a holiday to celebrate America's independence! You light up fireworks to celebrate

Lucy: one time, when I was a teen, I think I might've hit a raccoon with a misfired candle thing

Lucy: Good times, good times. Fireworks got banned a little while after though, I wonder why...

Atsushi, stepping away slowly: haha I wonder why too also I need to go now for unrelated reasons

I think regardless of the adult figures in your life you have a choice and if homophobic parents can raise gay/accepting children (and vise versa, crazy stuff going on in my family) then you can choose your own fate despite who raised you.

That sounded more passive aggressive than I intended but I REALLY think the abuse web/cycle stuff needs to be put down to allow for nuance. Especially when so many people end up using it as an excuse.

context:

I was rereading BEAST and you get examples of both Akutagawa's and Oda's blank stares within the first volume, Akutagawa looking more angry by default and Oda looking more bored. This got me thinking and you see similar tendencies out of Kyouka who gets posed as Fukuzawa's granddaughter(?) at one point if I remember correctly.

I mentioned this to a friend who thought that Oda had the worst case but I thought Kyouka was the worst when it came to it so I've made this poll!!

Whoever it is, it ain't Akutagawa, he's one minor unconvienence away at any given time from cussing out Atsushi... Regardless of if it was or wasn't Atsushi's fault.

uh if i forgot someone just comment but these are the main contenders i think.

What do you think would be the first thing a shinsoukoku would do after switching bodies with each other?

You do NOT need to hold fictional characters accountable, they are not real and can't hold themselves accountable.

HOWEVER, this is different from defending or dismissing the bad things a character has done, a bad action does not become not bad just because it's in a fictional story.

Furthermore, you CAN like a character whose a bad person without necessarily condoning their behavior.

What that all means is that you can be a Dazai fan, acknowledge he's done some bad things, and enjoy it whenever he's on screen/on page. And I won't bother you.

This just also means that if you're a Dazai fan that keeps blaming all of the things he's done on other people, his circumstances, and anything around him that isn't himself because you can't comprehend that he is capable of wrongs, I'll have to publicly execute you as an example of what happens when you've got a mind about as sharp as a marble, as bright as wilted flowers, and the media literacy skills of a half sheet worth of graph paper.

What's your favourite bsd theories that you believe are 100% true or likely to happen?

Okay, some of my favorite bsd theories are things that could just not happen or be addressed during the series but there are a few that I 100% believe.

For one, Akutagawa and Atsushi's abilities having to do with space (Rashomon being a spacial ability that can literally eat away matter itself??) and time (Atsushi being the "bookmark" and dealing with the changing time in recent chapters) sure as shit point at them doing something wildly important with the book. Are they gonna destroy it or something? I have no clue. But a singularity between them will be involved.

For a second thought, Dark Era Atsushi™ is, in fact, going to happen. Dazai is going to pissed as fuck about it, really, the entire agency will, but regardless Atsushi is going to the port mafia at some point. I've made countless posts about it, but I'll say it again! It is far more angsty to have Dazai deal with the guilt of Atsushi in the PM than having Dazai directly be the transfer!!!

Third, I think honorable mention should go to traumatized Naomi theory, which while might never be addressed is still 100% correct in my heart.

People don't think about BEAST Atsushi and that damned collar of his nearly enough.

Atsushi escapes the orphanage and the scars it gave him, all those cages too. He even probably misses out on a few blemishes since he leaves two years before his alternate self.

And he escapes into the loving hands of a mentor that blesses him with a collar instead of a cage and new scars in the form of a bloody necklace. That particular Dazai is one with twenty-two extra years of insight and yet he doesn't know how to whip a mentee into shape without leaving a red trail behind. He behaves more kindly with Atsushi, maybe speaks more gently, but is he truly kind?

Couldn't he have managed the tiger in some other way?

Maybe, he would tell you, it was the best way to it. Fastest, most effective. But would his silver tongue spell out the same lies if you asked him of Akutagawa? The other mentee whomst he scarred to train, that boy who was just the same age as the Atsushi he took into the Port Mafia. We see countless who learn to manage abilities in other ways, countless who are trained under people that weren't a so called "Demon Prodigy". Some are just as powerful as the children who bled at his hands.

So, there are two Atsushis, both equally scarred, but in different manners for the same reason; to be kept under control and hidden from the light of course. You may apply the logic to Akutagawa just the same but reversed, BEAST Akutagawa with more scars from the streets and the typical Akutagawa possessing some from Dazai.
