The calm before the storm (and by storm I mean a quadruple shot of espresso) 👹☕️
It’s been approximately 48 hours since Ulrich last slept. Honestly it’s probably been just as long since he showered or even ate something. He couldn’t bring himself to do any of those things though, not when Misha has been laying in a hospital bed for last couple of days now, complaining of stomach pains. Ulrich was coming back from the Hospital’s Pharmacy and was checking if he had everything in the doctor’s prescription when he heard someone calling on him from a distant. At first he tried to ignore it thinking it probably wasn’t him and sighing while he went on his way but all of a sudden he felt the person tug on him and he groaned, “what?!” Turning around he saw the guy and he took a deep breath before saying, “sorry, can I help you with something?”
“I’m sorry, sir. But do you think this one, or this one.” Erik asked Ulrich the most stupid question one could ever ask. He was holding two bouquet, one was a fancy white lilies with its stems cut off (because he’s allergic to it) wraps in a beautiful sheet of white mulberry paper and the other one was a bunch of pink-ish gypsophila tied together with a string of a small rope. Erik can’t decided between these two flowers for his sick colleague and that person insist him not to brings two flowers because he can’t choose any. Erik wants to bring his friend some flowers but he can’t decide which one. So, he bought them both anyway and now he needs Ulrich’s opinion about it.
Ulrich had sighed, long a deep with his eyes closing in the process. He really had no time for this, but he still muttered, “the pink ones.” He scratched on his chin with his thumb. “The white ones make it look like you’re already going to a funeral.” He bit his tongue for that comment, but he can’t really help that he’s painfully honest. A trait that gets him in trouble more often than not.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean...” Wait, why was he apologising? The man had asked for his opinion and he was just giving it. “Just, sorry man okay? I’m sure whoever you’re visiting would appreciate the pink flowers better. Stands out more against all the white and bright florescent.”

See, friends are overrated, ‘cause eventually someone will come along and shoot ‘em in the stack. You’re better off alone. Altered Carbon (2018-)
“So, uhh... I’ve never really been to Pride, but Misha said he wanted to go this year and you know... I don’t really know who to talk to about this.” Ulrich said awkwardly, scratching his chin before he continued. “Like, do you have any pointers on the Dos and Don’ts? I mean, obviously don’t be an asshole bigot but it would mean a lot to me if my son could have a really great experience for Pride.”

“I’ve been to Pride the past couple years, but this will be Vi’s first. My friend took his stepdaughter last year, and I heard nothing but positivity about it.” Micah hopped up on the counter with a wide smile on his face. “I think that having an open mind is the biggest do. There’s going to be some questions Misha might have, though. I think he’s going to love it.”
“Yeah, I wasn’t really big on Pride even before Misha, but I’ve seen a couple in New York. I suppose it’s just, he’s got curious over time why everything’s got a rainbow slapped on them suddenly.” He shrugged in explanation. “I’m not ready to expose him to certain parts of the parade, but I suppose as long as he gets to see the fun part of it, then we’ll count it as a success.”

“Lass uns gehen Bärchen, dein Kumpel wartet.” Ulrich called from the kitchen, making sure he’s got everything they needed for the day. Once he’s packed the food, utensils, and spare clothes he loaded everything into the truck his buddy Richard had graciously lent him for the day. Going back inside, he found his son still playing on his console, the shirt he picked up for the day on the bed. “Hey bud, what’s up? Come on, let’s get you dressed up.” The father of one said as he grabbed the Switch from the young one.
Not heeding the kid’s whines and complaints, he slipped the console back in the drawers. It was not 5 minutes later that Misha came bounding out the door and hugging his dad’s midsection. “You good to go kid?” The rhetorical question came as they went out the door. Shooting Pim a quick text to let him know they’re on their way, the Father & Son duo went on their way.
Parking the vehicle on the side of the road, Ulrich rolled down the window while they waited. “Did you enjoy your day yesterday with Pim?” He asked Misha while fixing the cow lick on his hair. It was with great fondness that he listened to his son talk about the day he’s had with the babysitter. The smile on his face went unnoticed until he heard his phone ring. “Hello? Yeah we’re just parked in front. Blue Jeep.” Securing the kid’s belt, he got out of the car where he spotted Pim on the other side of the road. Waving at him, he leaned back against the cold metal door, ignoring the heat rising up to his face.

Ever prepared, Pim had been all set an hour before. Occasionally, he would look at the hands on his clock to see if he had just enough tea and set down the cup. It was already his fourth, and if he had any more, he surmises that it might make trouble for him. The last time he was this anxious was before he ran away from his home. Though, in all honesty, this instance felt like it weighed a lot more. So, he calls up Ulrich, attempting to find any sort of human interaction to anchor him once more into composure, merely by asking where they were and informing them that he was all ready for the day ahead.
Pim had intended to make an impression, moreso than usual. He wanted the day to be great for Misha and Ulrich and his best foot forward was trembling, very unlike him. “I’ll be right outside.” he replies too stiffly and unceremoniously drops the call. Though upon seeing the duo, he finds himself smiling, comforted by their presence. “We’re nearly running late.” he looks at his watch then up to Ulrich as if to reprimand him. Despite their difference in size, he was not afraid to scold him and his son, but he does so in an almost soothing manner, and with a warm smile to boot, as if to signal quick forgiveness. “Can’t have that. We got people to show off to.” he straightens out the creases in Ulrich’s clothes and then leaves it with a small tug, chuckling. “Shall we?”
Almost automatically and out of instinct, Ulrich took the bag off of the other man and placed it on the backseat of the truck. “Oh relax, it’s a picnic, I’m sure everyone’s still just setting up the tables right now. They’ll be fine without us.” He explained while he stood still, allowing him to fix his shirt, which he clearly did not have the time to properly iron that morning. “Besides, I thought it’s always better to show up fashionably late at parties? Or did those Hollywood movies lie to me?” Ulrich challenged, clearing the air of any tension that might be brewing inside of Pim’s head. Supplementing this by giving the young man a solid pat on the back, Ulrich just gave off an easy grin.
“Buddy, wanna let Pim sit shotgun on the way to the park?” Ulrich asked of his son gently, who agreed to it, but only if he got to swap seats on the way home. Knowing full well he’d most likely be tired by then to even care, he nodded before turning around to wink at Pim. “Right then, let’s get going. Those potato salads aren’t gonna eat themselves!” He said once everybody fastened their seatbelts. It wasn’t 10 minutes into the drive when Ulrich noticed just how quiet and reserved Pim seem to be. Gone was the cheery demeanor he usually had around the Father & Son duo. “Hey, you okay man? Don’t worry too much about it, we’ll probably just have some bland salad, talk to the teachers while the kids run around. I’m sure we’ll be great!” He tried his best to be reassuring so he slipped his hand off the shift gear and squeezed on Pim’s lower thigh ever so gently. A gesture the he regretted almost instantly as he pulled away and focused his eyes back on the road.

“I mean I cant disagree with you there man, summer here is always the best,”
“Well, I wouldn’t say the best but you know it’s up there. Besides, home will always have a special place in your heart. God know I’d kill to be able to visit the family in New York, myself.”
Ulrich, I'm terribly sorry. But I may have embellished one thing about my resume. Or at least hid it. But before I tell you, let me explain... I twisted my ankles and I'm left to provide for the care of your little tiger on the floor. Now, for the truth: I have weak ankles. I thought you should know.
“I’m sorry what? Are you okay? Is Misha okay? How are you only telling me this now?” A barrage of questions came out of Ulrich as he rushed back into the living room to see that the young man was, in fact, sprawled on the floor, his legs outstretched. “Jesus Pim,” he muttered as he scooped him off the floor, making sure to be as gentle as possible while he transferred him to the couch. “Let’s see if we need to call the hospital.”
