we should never stop talking about this
wanna hang out [remembers it's rude to put expectations on people] it's cool if not [remembers people like to know they're wanted] but I'd really like it if you did [remembers selfishness is bad] we can do whatever you want though [remembers that handing someone a blank canvas isn't as effective as providing a suggestion to bounce ideas off of] like sucking each others fingers for example
used to love scrolling endlessly on tumblr but the ads have yet again ruined this and made it overstimulating for me
Early in Shaneās first year with Ottawa, he takes a bad hit on the ice and is knocked unconscious. When he wakes, he discovers he can hear everyoneās thoughts. His excitement is quickly dashed when he discovers that Ilya thinks primarily in Russian so even though he can hear his husbandās thoughts, he canāt understand most of them. Shane doubles his efforts in studying Russian. He hires a tutor and basically any free time he has, heās studying Russian. He even asks Ilya to speak Russian to him when theyāre at home so he can learn faster. Ilya is happy to oblige and by the end of the season, Shane can understand most of Ilyaās thoughts.
Theyāre warming up on the ice when Shane zeroes in on Ilyaās thoughts. Theyāre in Russian but he can pretty much understand everything: āGod, my husband is so hot doing his little stretch. Everything he does is so fucking hot. Iām so fucking lucky. I need to focus, but I really want to kiss him. Would he get mad if I kissed him right now? Maybe just on the cheek? Or-oh shit, heās looking at me! Why am I so nervous? Oh, heās coming over here! Maybe to talk about the game? AH! He kissed me on the cheek! The way heās looking at me, my heart is about to beat out of my chest. Yes, my love, I will calm downā¦wait, how does he know Iām flustered? Oh, Shane says my smile is goofy. For a second, I thought he could read my thoughts. That would be crazyā¦unlessā¦Shane if you can hear my thoughts, kiss me on the lips. AH! HE KISSED ME ON THE LIPS! SHANE, MY LOVE YOU CAN HEAR ME, YES? I LOVE YOU! DO YOU HEAR ME, I LOVE YOU! COME BACK HERE! DONāT SKATE AWAY FROM ME!ā
We donāt talk about this enough. With all the big romantic gestures in The Long Game, this, to me, is one of the most romantic moments.
We know Ilya isnāt a fan of Shaneās restrictive diet. He teases him about it, but Ilya is an expert ragebaiter who knows how to tease the people he cares about when they feel safe and in ways that never really hurt.
Shane is āfranticā in this scene. Ilya has the perfect opening to say something about his diet, and he doesnāt take it. He sees that Shane is panicking, steps in and fixes it. He was looking at that menu thinking about Shane and Shaneās fuckass diet that Ilya doesnāt even like. But he knows this is important to Shane. He knows Shane is already nervous about being on a date with Ilya in public and being with another queer couple. So he meets Shaneās needs without Shane ever having to ask, and he does it quietly, without drawing any attention, so that Shane can save face.
Of course heās gonna tease him about it a little bit later because thatās what they do. But he only does that AFTER Shaneās had a chance to catch his breath and feel safe again.
To be loved is to be known indeed.

Ok but Ilya not realizing until much later that he hurt Shane with things heād done in the past
One day it randomly comes up as Ilya says something about a time he acted like a dick and Shane is just like āEh itās ok, looking back I understand now that you were in a āIām going to hurt you before you can hurt meā mindset and thatās why you acted like that.ā
And Ilya is staring at him and Shane asks whatās wrong and Ilya goes āI hurt you?ā And Shaneās just like well yeah but it was forever ago donāt worry about it. But Ilya is worrying about it because back when heād done the various hurtful things heād been in downward spirals where he was convinced he didnāt have the ability to hurt Shane because he didnāt matter enough to Shane to hurt him, so he didnāt think the way he acted had any negative effects. And now heās turning pale and his eyes are getting big as heās realizing that oh god when he did those things he hurt his favorite person and he hadnāt even realized it
He makes Shane tell him the different times it happened and Shane doesnāt really want to because clearly this is just going to upset Ilya more, but hiding it or lying is probably also going to make things worse in the long run so itās better to get it out now. So he mentions Ilya ghosting him after they had sex, and then how Ilya acted in Sochi, and that whole night in Vegas, and āI like you⦠Not as a person, obviouslyā
And the whole time Ilya is silently nodding and looking like he wants to throw up because no no no those werenāt supposed to be things that hurt Shane, those were supposed to be things that bounced off Shane without affecting him because they were only ever meant to hurt or protect himself, Shane was never supposed to have been hurt by those and fuck how did he not see in the moment the way that he was actively hurting Shane by doing that
And now itās even worse because Shane wonāt even be mad at him about it, he keeps insisting on being understanding and not upset and trying to make Ilya feel better when in fact Ilya is the worst most awful person in the world who should be punished for eternity for making 22 year old floppy haired baby Shane SAD like some kind of MONSTER
The next Galina session Shane is also there with Ilya who has his head in his hands and Shane is just like ok so we may have accidentally stepped on a landmine the other night-
the thing about Troy and Shane is that Troy can never fix it. he can never un-say the terrible, disgusting, homophobic, [edited to remove the word "racist" bc there is no explicit canonical evidence that troy was explicitly racist] shit he said. he can never un-laugh at the shit that Dallas Kent said. he can't go back in time and rewrite his ugly past. he will never earn Shane's trust or respect. the damage cannot be undone.
Shane will always know that there were lots of other closeted MLH players struggling with internalized homophobia who didn't resort to the tactics that Troy did. those players include Shane himself, who is gay AND a person of colour, and Shane's husband, whose literal life would have been in danger in Russia if he were outed. so Shane will never ever sympathize with Troy. he might understand why Troy did what he did, but that will never excuse it.
and Troy. Troy just has to live with that. like a lot of us, Troy has to accept that self-hatred and internalized homophobia don't excuse being bigoted and hateful towards others. the hurt you caused them is not negated by the fact that you were hurting, too. and part of growing as a person and trying to be better is learning to live with the guilt, shame and regret. you don't get to make yourself feel better by being absolved. you can try to be better going forward. you can try to spend the rest of your life doing more good than the harm you did in your past. you can try to forgive yourself. but you can't erase it.
Shane might forgive, but he won't forget. he won't like, trust or respect Troy. and playing on the same team means that Troy can never forget either. he will ALWAYS be face to face with his mistakes. he can never escape that discomfort. and he just. has. to. live with it.
HEARTSTOPPER FOREVER is dropping on Netflix on July 17th 2026!!!!
Heated Rivalry AU where Ilya dips out early from a post-game party with Boston, and someone gets the idea to put on a Hollonov compilation as a joke.
The whole team settles in with rapt attention, ready to roast the shit out of Roz over it via group chat, only to see. Well. It's a series of interview clips over the years. It's made up exclusively of three things. One, clips of Hollander "stealing" linguistically challenging questions that the whole team knows Rozanov hates. Two, clips of Rozanov derailing questions that are about Hollander's "representation of his community," which gossip on the street says makes Hollander uncomfortable. Three, Hollander and Rozanov commenting individually on the rivalry, with vicious comments such as. "He's of course a great player, but he'll find us difficult to beat." Such fire in Rozanov's comments are especially damning, given his whole chirp-king-schtick. The video editor, with all the obsession and perception of a true fangirl, makes sure to circle every instance where you can see the shadow of Hollander and Rozanov pressing their feet together - and in one instance holding hands - beneath the interview table. (You wouldn't see it unless you're looking for it - or unless someone circles it in red for you.)
The video finishes, and the team sits in a kind of shocked silence as the next video auto-plays. This one is a compilation of Rozanov chirping Hollander on the ice. Here, the editor has helpfully drawn an arrow to Hollander's face whenever he blushes. The editor has also inserted text overlays with comments like. "Look at how fiercely Rozanov insults his rival." And then puts smaller arrows pointing to Roz's body language, with helpful texts like "excited wiggle indicating absolute fury," and "besotted grin indicating deep hatred." The sarcasm is distressingly accurate in its point.
(Listen, the whole team knows what Roz looks like when he's chirping someone. This - this is not it. This is not it at all. This is him when he's being silly with people he really likes. What is going on.)
The video finishes, and this time someone has the presence of mind to stop the auto-play before another mind-breaking thing comes up.
Someone else, trying to lighten the silence with a joke, and maybe dismiss it all as a fever dream, says, "Montreal Jane? More like Montreal Shane, am I right?"
And. Well.
Once it's out there, there's no coming back from it.
Cliff asks aloud, to no one in particular, "Are we just stupid?"
@munsons-mutiny It is a crime to leave this in the tags. I would give my firstborn to see your ideas in fic form.
I think I may already owe you my soul just for getting to read your continuation of the idea. How does it feel to be better than someone on their own post?
if we get an irina foundation hockey camp montage at any point in s2 i hope it includes a clip of a three year old dropping gloves on ilya and him fully committing to the bit. just straight up dramatics as the kid pummels his kneecaps, dropping to the ice, rolling around calling to the ref (shane) to intervene already (spoiler, he doesn't).
i just think it would be neat.
I donāt want sex! I want him to hold me as we lay in bed and kisses my head, telling me he loves me and that it will all be ok!
