Floating around the idea of a vsmp soulmate AU where it’s basically the same rules as Double Life.
Like Owen and Legs would obviously be paired together, they have this whole “two sides of the same coin, our souls are irrevocably intertwined” schtick in a lot of fanon stuff anyway and I am HERE FOR IT. Legs has more sympathy for vampires than any of the other townsfolk, and that would be amplified if his soul is actually bound to one. It would also make his attempts to get the town to trust them even more desperate, because if the humans go after Owen they also might end up killing him. Perhaps Owen is even more rejecting of the Doc’s attempts at trying to get him on his side because he thinks it’s just so Legs can save his own skin. On the flip side, there’s also the active suicidal ideation that’s rife between BOTH of them, and Owen’s “I’m going down but I’m taking you with me” approach towards the end would give some excellent angst points with this mechanic. If the pairs weren’t randomised in Double Life, it would definitely be them.
However, Legs and Avid being soul-bound has the potential to be comedy gold. Legs finding out that they’re tied and just “Oh god not that lunatic.” Imagine them being at each other’s throats and the only thing stopping Doc from ripping Avid’s head off is the fact that he can’t risk himself. On the angstier side, imagine Doc getting bitten by Owen in Ep4 and Avid feeling it and being terrified. Imagine the Doctor trying to keep that a secret but knowing that Avid knows and won’t be able to resist blabbing to the town. Imagine being Avid and knowing that your doctor is in some way working with the vampires and voluntarily getting drained and watching him lie about it and not knowing if he’s someone to trust.
Scott and Legs could also be super interesting, since Legs thought Scott was the WORST. Legs is also one of the most trusted and valued member of the town, which would put them in a difficult situation if they ever wanted to defeat Scott. But it would also be an interesting parallel upon reflection and realising that Scott was much more similar to the Doc in terms of being redeemable than Owen was.
Scott could actually be paired with a lot of people for this. My first thought would unsurprisingly be Avid (yaoi enjoyer enjoys yaoi, fork found in kitchen) and it would be a lot of fun, especially at the start with all the murder accusations. I imagine Avid wouldn’t feel great about his soul being tied to a vampire, especially with the idea that he can’t kill Scott without killing himself (or finding a way to break the bond, probably something to do with the beacons). But he knows that Scott can’t hurt him either, and so when he eventually joins the castle he knows he can trust Scott to want to keep him safe. Scott at first protects him as a way of protecting himself, but then he forms genuine affection for him.
My second thought was that Scott could be tied to Shelby. This, I think, is what makes the most sense in terms of keeping things canon-compliant. Scott is always very protective of her, and Shelby is loyal to him, and they would make a great team. This would also probably make sense in this case to make Avid tied to Drift.
It could also be interesting if Scott’s paired with Owen, since they were both the starting vampires. It would give them a real disadvantage because they could be defeated a lot quicker if they were found out. People would have a lot more trouble hurting a vampire if that meant hurting a human as well, so the two most powerful vampires being paired together would make things a lot easier for the town, and the vampires a lot more desperate.
I still haven’t watched Pyro’s POV, but I imagine the MajorScythe shippers can think of some toxic way they can be toxic together with this mechanic.
It also has some angst potential if Apo (Who’s POV I also haven’t seen yet) was tied to Scott, which would put her in such a difficult situation because she can’t defeat him without killing herself.
This is also the part where I admit that I’ve only watched Double Life from Grian’s perspective so I don’t really know the other dynamics. I am aware that Scott and Pearl were soulmates in that and they got up to some divorced hijinks, but that’s pretty much all I know. It would be interesting to have some of the events of Double Life play out in this AU, if I only knew what events those were. For vampires only it would probably mean Pearl would get turned first rather than last, that’s if Scott could turn his soulmate. If not, then there would be a similar situation to the doc. Perhaps some MoonRot stuff with Cleo wanting to protect Peal, meaning she’d also have to protect Scott.
However just Pearl and Cleo being bound would also be great because yuri.
I believe Martyn and Cleo were also bound in Double Life, but I didn’t watch that POV so I have no idea how that would go if it was translated into vampires. Let me know your thoughts in the reblogs.
Martyn and Ren would also be an obvious choice, seeing as they do keep dying in each other’s arms in every universe.
I probably won’t write this into an actual fic, but it’s a fun AU just to think about.
