So I've been thinking about Miles O'Brien and how he was basically the same in the regular universe and the mirror universe

Why did they do that? They even had another character mention it

Could this be why he is the most important man in Starfleet history? Not because he did anything important himself, necessarily, but just by existing as some sort of… dimensional constant, what if he helped someone figure out like, the Grand Unified Theory of how the universes work?

Because we know from Strange New Worlds, there are other dimensions aside from the regular one and the mirror one. There's an entire dimension where everything is musical theater

What if, in every permutation of the multiverse, the one constant is Miles Edward O'Brien?

Just an ordinary guy, blue-collar worker, good dad with the occasional traumatic experience. He doesn't rise to power, he isn't evil, he doesn't sing more than the average person

He isn't a villain, but he doesn't think of himself as a hero either. He doesn't go off and do amazing things every day, and he doesn't want to. He's gay but not really and only for a couple dudes, the same way he is straight but only for one or two women

He's just that guy you can rely on to fix the ship and occasionally do something heroic but mostly he just wants to have a drink with his friends, do a little homoerotic LARPing, not get killed or tortured, and go home to his family

In. Every. Universe.

So back in the day, I had a bunch of different Tumblr accounts for different things (I kinda do/did that on Twitter too).

Is that still a thing? Or is Tumblr's filtering good enough now that I can have all my interests in one big chaotic space?

For those of you watching the death spiral of Twitter in real time THIS IS WHY us fandom olds always defend AO3 and it’s donation drives.

Twitter is an incalculable loss for artistic expression, news, and so many other facets I can’t even begin to count.

This sort of loss of information is impossible with AO3 and how it’s set-up. Obviously an AO3 style model isn’t sustainable for every site bc the moment images get involved the server costs skyrocket exponentially, but now more than ever the theory applies.

AO3 is an archive of our own, donators have direct say via vote about what happens to the site, you help shape it.

As long as AO3 has donation drives and doesn’t rely on advertisers it will remain around as a foremost place of art and freedom of expression. What happened to Twitter can’t happen to AO3 as it currently exists. And that is why we fight tooth and nail to protect AO3 from corporate interests and out of touch billionaires like Musk.

I hate that Twitter is dying and that anyone has to experience it, but please learn from this experience!

"Star Trek: Picard" attracts a lot of criticism for its more cynical take on the Federation, but I maintain that there's nothing about how the Federation is depicted there that doesn't have precedent on TNG, DS9, and Voyager.

We like to think that the Federation is super progressive, but bear in mind that they're still banning generic engineering four centuries after Earth fucked around and found out with it. They're still clinging to one planet's fear and prejudice, 400 years on; and the timeframe of TNG > Picard spans just 40.

And boy howdy, what a 40 years. When it started, the Romulans were recluses again, mysterious to pretty much anyone outside their borders; now they're refugees, and the Federation populace is expected to find sympathy for a culture defined largely by it's acts of aggression against them - including at least two attempts to topple the Federation this generation alone. Earth has been nearly attacked by the Borg twice, and successfully attacked by the Breen once, and now Mars is attacked by Synths - add to that the Dominion War, the Tzenkethi War, the Cardassian Wars, another (brief) Klingon War... of course the Federation is weary after that much conflict and peril.

Also, the cynicism is the point. Star Trek has always had leaders who make fear-based choices, and the duty of every Captain / protagonist is to defy that and find the hopeful solution instead. What Picard does is show how easy it is to get swept up in that cynicism, how contagious that bleak outlook can be: even Picard has lost hope, but he goes on a journey to find it again, and that spark of hope gives others something to rally around. We (unfortunately) don't get to see how that hope plays out (we really need a DS9 style show that will dwell on all these new story ideas and let them unfold), but there's no difference between this and what Star Trek has always done. All they've done is make the Federation as tired and worn down as a 2020s audience feels.
