What is yalls favorite book out of the underland chronicles? We love them all, obviously, but my favorite one is the 4th. I know it’s pretty dark with the genocide and all and the major character deaths break my heart every time.
But it’s the only book Gregor enjoys spending time in the Underland. He goes there often and freely.
I feel like we really get to  explore the underland more in this book, as the characters live their more or less normal life for the beginning of the book. The characters are not on an official prophecy journey, but living their lives and then deciding on their own terms what to do.
The characters and their dynamics are well developed and established at that time. I love Ripred and his relationships to Gregor and Luxa and the rest. I love how the dynamic between Luxa and Gregor changes while still being pretty subtle. The dance scene. Howard is being great. Temp gets the recognition he deserves. I just really love that book.
Mine’s definitely the third.
For one, that’s the book with Hamnet, whom I love. His whole arc and philosophy is wonderful. He’s also, like, the only character to really acknowledge just how young Gregor is.
It’s also where we see Lapblood the most, who’s another character I really like. And the scene where Gregor cleans her fur is incredible and also makes me cry every time. She also did a lot to kinda humanize the rats because, while Ripred was there, Lapblood actually felt like part of them and was also a very sympathetic character.
It’s also got the best pacing/writing in the series imo, although for me the second book is a close second there. The first book feels kinda disconnected from the rest, and I find four and five to be too sad and busy. (I still love them though)
on the note abt humanizing the rats, that was explicitly handled as it dealt w gregors realization of the bad things humans have done and how the rats r just ppl and its not that there are exceptions that r good
personally book one feels like a scene setter. obvs it has story but it rlly establishes characters imo. books 4 and 5 i feel like build on eachother so much that its hard to separate them. 2 and 3 are the ones that feel standalone to me. im currently rereading and this might change. but i think my favorite is prob 2 bc i love twitchtip sm. and thats where u rlly see a shift in gregor to like care more abt listening to the crawlers. and to caring abt crew mates even if theyre rats. and like hm idk.
inlove them all amd its hard to pick though
The fifth book. The desolation, the sense of urgency, the declarations and the words accidentally left unspoken, the consequences of hatred realized, the culmination of hundreds of years of death and destruction, all to throw it all away and begin anew? Yuuuuup.
Book 3! I could make the joke that it’s because we’re in a pandemic, but I really do think that it’s my favorite. You really see Gregors mind open to so many more possibilities and how the world isn’t so black and white. I feel like it’s one of the best developed books in the series
