they’ve been dodging this lawsuit for over a decade. They promised congress they would try their best to not source from child slave plantations ten or fifteen years ago... but it’s just so hard to profit without child slavery being in the equation somewhere you know. And congress was like, well, as long as you’re trying.

Then a few years ago the like, state of California sued them over it but they loop-holed out of it. I’ve been boycotting all the major chocolate companies for years now. 

And don’t forget they own little indie looking brands. See this?

this brand is owned by Hershey. “inspired chocolate empowering women” while they’ve sourced up to 48% of their cocoa from child slave plantations.

Reminder that fair trade chocolate exists!!

There are a variety of fair trade chocolate companies that must ensure they aren't sourcing from plantations using child labor in order to get their label.

If you have an Aldi nearby, they tend to make it somewhat easier to find such brands in their stores compared to many other grocery stores.

For reference, here are some symbols you want to look for to find fair trade products, and their brands! (I didn't use Green America's most recent card because frankly it's quite shit and doesn't provide percentages or reasons as to why they're good/bad like thos one does. Tho since then it has been confirmed that Godiva IS worse than Nestlé, Mars, and Hershey. Also I'd go by percentages rather than the colors because the way they chose to organize this is. Weird.)

Tony's Chocolonely actually has a hardcore backstory (which you can find on wikipedia). Which is that Tony himself was an investigative journalist or something when he found out most popular chocolate companies used child slavery. So he decided to film himself eating all the chocolate brands and then sue himself for knowingly purchasing and consuming products from companies taking part on child slavery in an attempt to bring all those companies down with him. He failed, but because of that he made his own company to prove that being a successful company using only fair trade slave-free chocolate could be done. Which is like. King Shit.
