I'm a Seanan McGuire fanboy, so I love everything she puts out, even if I can rank titles within the massive list of works.

That said, Inkpot Gods is off to a better than average start so far, and I'm all in on the Alchemical Journeys series.

Roger from the series remains one of my favorite book characters, across authors/genres.

i think when actors need to leave a show for whatever reason but the character is important and doesnt need to be written off / writing them off would make the story worse i think they should just hire a new actor for the character but, and this is the crucial bit, hire a similar-looking actor of a different gender. Yeppp they look different bc they transitioned between seasons. Obviously

A couple of rereads from my high school years, so twenty+ years ago, to firm up some analysis in my writing. I suffered through Mists of Avalon recently, and now it's time for Tolkien.

Now it's not that I dislike it or that it's bad or whatever, but it does recall a very particular protestant upbringing and reading the Bible so many times, it's like a weird echo. And it's meant to be written somewhat that way, not quite a religious text as a history like Geoffrey of Monmouth, perhaps, but the prose is similar across all.

Anyway, I'm mostly skimming and I'll never remember all the names, but I've pulled a fair amount out to use in my analysis of Critical Role's Campaign 4, which is heavily inspired by the Silmarillion and the reason I'm returning to the text at this time at all.

Noting that the land of Araman exists here, this is one of the quotes I pulled:

PTSD from hotd this week. Getting your period moments before sitting the throne and hearing petitions for the first time? Her clammy sweaty skin...the way the audio goes in and out, her posture. It's been years since I had a uterus but woof I remembered that.

I love how the show has angled the adaptation around women and their power, or lack thereof, even as heir, even as Queen. What is the role of a woman? When she's common? When she's a queen? When she rides a dragon?

The cost of duty, finding spaces within those lines. From Rhaenyra asking Alicent to fly away together at the start, when Alicent can't fathom leaving behind the status Rhaenyra holds...to Alicent asking Rhaenyra to leave end of s2 and now here they are together in the keep.

"your father lives in a world of his own construction. You and I have never set foot there." The world of men. Of nobility. Of prophecy.

The Vampire Lestat works so well as an exploration of trauma because the first two seasons of Interview with the Vampire set the stage. The depth of the world, the intensity of the emotions, and the queerness in every second, all work to highlight the differences in the story now that Lestat is at the center.

This figure that loomed so large in Louis's story is himself just a part of that same cycle of violence vampirism can represent.

And then we get to Akasha. And the question of consent, of autonomy, of inheriting a fatal flaw..of legacy.

I have complicated thoughts about the few women in the show, but I think they do show how these men view their world.

In my current research (I'm writing about LB in my doctoral thesis) I've found that Tracy Deonn:

1) says Will is her favorite character

3) says a big inspiration for her was Susan Cooper's The Dark is Rising series...a series of novellas from the 70s/80s where a young boy, William, becomes an Arthurian hero...

And I'm just seeing dots connect in fascinating ways is all.
