Long-Bell Kitchen, 1963
i did konmari step 1 this weekend- clothes, jewelry, shoes, bags, accessories. i was so excited to start, i forgot to take before pics! it's amazing that i really did find love in folding which has never happened to me! look at those undies rolled up like roses and those neatly folded button ups! i even managed to combine my summer and winter wardrobes, no need to change out drawers 2x a year. my closet has ample room for my clothes to breathe and many things that used to hang now have newfound space in my drawers. shoes all fit in the closet now, freeing up the floor space they used to occupy in my small bedroom.
i still have a lot of clothes, and marie kondo assures us that that's ok! it sparks joy to be able to dress comfy and express my personal style. during the process i held on to some summer pieces on a "probationary" status - i found it hard to determine if a sun dress sparks joy while it's 15 degrees out!
the best part of this was letting go of clothes that are too small. i wasn't exactly holding onto clothes in hopes that i would lose weight, but i did hang on to stuff that *kind of* fit simply bc the item doesn't come in my actual size. i said thank you to my body by discarding clothes that make it uncomfortable and squished. i promise that any new purchases will fit the right way and that *kind of* fits won't come home with me again.
this feels SO. GOOD. i can't wait for the next steps!
i discarded 6.5 trash bags of clothes and 2 paper grocery bags of accessories, mostly donateable.
i got really into konmari. read the book, watched the series with k, and then he read the book and is super into it too. i'm getting ready to start with my clothes this weekend & he will follow suit.
i did a little pre-work - k will fill it in next - to map out where my stuff is and how i want the space to look. here's a few of the sections of my pre-work. basically: where can i find stuff from each of the categories, and what sub-categories do the fall into, followed by what my vision is for each room. once k fills in his vision we'll go over it together to make sure we're on the same page. it helped a lot to make sense of everything so far, and also helped me feel like i was getting started/making progress without upturning my house on a weeknight!
i'm piling up all my clothes this friday night, then it's go time!

Finally finished putting all my new furniture together and doing laundry and generally catching up on life after the craziness of the holidays.
The Easiest Way To Clean Your House, In One Simple Chart // Huffington Post

I love instructionals for things like this. People just assume everyone is good at cleaning and shame others who aren’t. But it’s really an art to maintaining a clean environment and there is nothing wrong with having a cute helpful chart.
Just cleaned my bedroom and kitchen to take photos for a subletter & thought I’d post ‘em here because I haven’t posted in ages!
my aesthetic is the direct opposite of minimalism and its called clutterbitch
The act of writing in a journal is the very antithesis of writing for others. The skeptic might object that the writer of a journal may be deliberately creating a journal-self, like a fictitious character, and while this might be true, for some, for a limited period of time, such a pose can’t be sustained for very long, and certainly not for years. It might be argued that, like our fingerprints and voice “prints,” our journal-selves are distinctly our own; try as we might, we can’t elude them; the person one is, is evident in every line; not a syllable can be falsified. At times the journal-keeper might even speak in the second person, as if addressing an invisible “you” detached from the public self: the ever-vigilant, ever-scrutinizing “inner self” as distinct from the outer, social self. As our greatest American philosopher William James observed, we have as many public selves as there are people whom we know. But we have a single, singular, intractable, and perhaps undisguisable “inner self” most at home in secret places.
