Castiel thinks his newly-human body is in denial about needing to sleep. It’s either that or he’s being intentionally punished, which he doesn’t rule out, because every time he tries to sleep he has nightmares—horrible ones, too. Ones that wake him up screaming. That, in turn, wakes Dean up, and after a week of that exhausting cycle he’s relegated himself to simply never sleeping again.

Instead he stares at Dean. He counts his freckles—as many as he can see, when Dean has his face half-buried into Castiel’s chest—and he trails his fingers along Dean’s arm.

“You know,” Dean grumbles, and Castiel freezes as if he’s been caught. “For a guy who just came back to life, you sure stare at me like I’m the one who’s gonna disappear.”

Castiel frowns. “I thought you were asleep.” It’s not an answer, but Dean hadn’t exactly asked a question.

“I could feel you watching me.” Dean tilts his head up, trying to make eye contact. Castiel avoids it. “What’s going on, Cas?”

He takes a deep breath and still doesn’t meet Dean’s gaze. He’s been vague, he’s danced around it, but now—he’s tired.

“I don’t want to watch you die again,” he replies, a hoarse whisper, and there’s a short shocked silence in which Dean pushes himself off of Castiel’s chest and onto one elbow.
