HAPPY PRIDE! 🌈 WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS | S4E05
Rule one of fandom: there are some things that only exist for us.
Don’t send actors fics
Don’t give them explicit art ever
Don’t tag them in rpf questions or theories
Don’t try to bring them into fandom drama of any kind
Don’t hold them responsible for what the producers and writers decide
They’re still people. They have private lives, which do not include fandom.
louder for the people in the back!
Louder for the media!
Don’t trick crew members into retweeting your crack.
Don’t tell the show runners how to run the show.
Don’t show up on set and threaten suicide if you don’t get to meet your fave. (Yes this has happened).
Don’t harass actors. THEY ARE NOT THEIR CHARACTERS.
Don’t fish for spoilers at cons.
I could go on…
DON’T HARASS ACTORS ABOUT YOUR SHIPS
DON’T INVADE THEIR SPACE
There are actors (crew, showrunners, etc.) who are interested in fandom and want to be involved.
THEY CAN FIND US. WE ARE NOT A SECRET.
Let THEM come to US. Don’t seek them out. Don’t pester them for reactions.
Let them decide their level and style of engagement with fandom. An actor giggling as he reposts a fanart of his character in bondage is NOT an invitation to flood him with 75 explicit fic recs.
would anyone be interested if i started posting cbs ghosts content?
coz i have ideas but idk how big the fandom is here
Writing Tip: Don’t Be Afraid of Mixing Dialogue and Action
So I’ve been reading a lot of amateur writing lately, and I’ve noticed what seems to be a common problem: dialogue.
Tell me if this looks familiar. You start writing a conversation, only to look down and realize it reads like:
“I’m talking now,” he said.
“Yes, I noticed,” she said.
“I have nothing much to add to this conversation,” the third person said.
And it grates on your ears. So much ‘said.’ It looks awful! It sounds repetitive. So, naturally, you try to shake it up a bit:
“Is this any better?” He inquired.
“I’m not sure,” she mused.
“I definitely think so!” that other guy roared.
This is not an improvement. This is worse.
Now your dialogue is just as disjointed as it was before, but you have the added problem of a bunch of distracting dialogue verbs that can have an unintentionally comedic effect.
So here’s how you avoid it: You mix up the dialogue with description.
“Isn’t this better?” he asked, leaning forward in his seat. “Don’t you feel like we’re more grounded in reality?”
She nodded, looking down at her freshly manicured nails. “I don’t feel like a talking head anymore.”
“Right!” that annoying third guy added. “And now you can get some characterization crammed into the dialogue!”
The rules of dialogue punctuation are as follows:
Each speaker gets his/her own paragraph - when the speaker changes, you start a new paragraph.
Within the speaker’s own paragraph, you can include action, interior thoughts, description, etc.
You can interrupt dialogue in the middle to put in a “said” tag, and then write more dialogue from that same speaker.
You can put the “said” tag at the beginning or end of the sentence.
Once you’ve established which characters are talking, you don’t need a “said” tag every time they speak.
ETA: use a comma instead of a period at the end of a sentence of dialogue, and keep the ‘said’ tag in lower caps. If you end on a ? or !, the ‘said’ tag is still in lower case. (thanks, commenters who pointed this out!)
Some more examples:
“If you’re writing an incomplete thought,” he said, “you put a comma, then the quote mark, then the dialogue tag.”
“If the sentence ends, you put in a period.” She pointed at the previous sentence. “See? Complete sentences.”
“You can also replace the dialogue tag with action.” Extra guy yawned. “When you do, you use a period instead of a comma.”
So what do you do with this newfound power? I’m glad you asked.
You can provide description of the character and their surroundings in order to orient them in time and space while talking.
You can reveal characterization through body language and other nonverbal cues that will add more dimension to your dialogue.
You can add interior thoughts for your POV character between lines of dialogue - especially helpful when they’re not saying quite what they mean.
You can control pacing. Lines of dialogue interrupted by descriptions convey a slower-paced conversation. Lines delivered with just a “said” tag, or with no dialogue tag at all, convey a more rapid-fire conversation.
For example:
“We’ve been talking about dialogue for a while,” he said, shifting in his seat as though uncomfortable with sitting still.
“We sure have,” she agreed. She rose from her chair, stretching. “Shall we go, then?”
“I think we should.”
“Great. Let’s get out of here.”
By controlling the pacing, you can establish mood and help guide your reader along to understanding what it is that you’re doing.
I hope this helps you write better dialogue! If you have questions, don’t hesitate to drop me an ask :)

In honor of Ghosts coming back tonight, here are some text post memes I made to deal with my Ghosts hyperfixation during the hiatus.
There is more. I don't know what is wrong with me.
“This character is dead in canon” to you. They’re dead in canon to you. To me they’re fine
he is so adorable
Me being a fan of CBS Ghosts and What We Do In The Shadows, and seeing these shows get picked up
ive probably said this before but i LOVE the twilight zone episodes with no quantifiable moral at the end, they just wrap up like “wouldnt it be fucked up if that happened?”
everyone saying black mirror NO the whole point of black mirror is that it’s rife with unwanted morals! no! i don’t want to be told how technology is making us distant and how helicopter parenting makes kids hate you i want “what if astronauts found their own dead bodies on a random planet and had a breakdown for a full episode then realized they’re dead for real and then forget and do it all again forever, wouldn’t that be fucked? i’m rod serling”
[ID: A picture of Rod Serling on The Twilight Zone, looking into the camera. Captions read: “Goddamn you see that shit? That was fucking crazy / Anyway I’m Rod Sterling”. End ID.]
“Ghosts are real” I can see how you could believe that
“Ghosts aren’t real” it’s very fair and rational that you believe that
“Ghosts aren’t real anymore” I’m about to hear a poem or very sad story
“Ghosts aren’t real yet” the fuck are you going to do
My thoughts on Isaac and Nigel's treatment in the show
hey everyone. today i wanna talk about a serious topic that's been bothering me for a while. I didn't wanna say anything because i thought it was just an impression but now i gotta say... I genuinely think this show is being homophobic towards Isaac. LET ME COOK.
Starting with something i read/heard (can't remember) Brandon saying a while ago, about how isaac was fully just meant to be a joke and only got more substance because he went and had a conversation with the Joes. I think everyone is pretty aware of how femme gay men tend to be treated as a joke in shows, and only that, to the point where many feminine gay actors only get casted in those specific roles.
We've seen many of the main ghosts forming relationships that have been going great so far, but also some of them were randomly forced in romances that make zero sense (such as bela x sass and trevor x patience) and of course all of them are straight couples! And not only that -- many of the ghosts also achieved many things that they wanted throughout the show. But i swear, it can't be only my impression, that Isaac NEVER wins, ever. And i get it because he's a silly guy, and i love him for that, but i can't help feeling that he's there most of the time to be a punchbag.
And so many of us were so happy for him and Nigel to actually get married, but everything was ruined because they had to add Chris and now he's not even in the show anymore. On the crumbs of interaction between Isaac and Nigel that we had since season 4, we have seen that even thought they're not on good terms, they still care about each other, deep down, somewhere, but they do.
I don't wanna make this longer than it already is, but a lot of us saw the plot for tomorrow's episode, with minimal details, about how Isaac was thinking about some past relationships being too important to be left behind, and obviously we came to the conclusion that this was about Nigel... but NOPE!!! it's the same plot about the basement ghosts over and over again. like, SERIOUSLY? This has to be some kind of ragebait for us, because the way they wrote it made it very likely to believe that we were going to get a nisaac reunion. I've been waiting almost a month for this episode, and i was getting excited about it, and yeah... I genuinely don't understand why they can't even touch the subject anymore, the ENTIRE fandom wants them back, and even in one of the most recent episodes, Nigel was there in the background and didn't say A SINGLE WORD to Isaac. My only guess is homophobia honestly 🤷🏽♀️ we had the whole buildup of their relationship to score some "woke points" and then it was thrown in the trash. I'm ngl if they don't fix this in the next season, I'll be even more disappointed about this show :/
Guys, I really don't think Nisaac is coming back.
What I think is: they've always been a couple who "take things slowly," and now the series will only have season 6 to work on that, and considering they don't know if will be renewed for season 7, I believe they'll want to resolve everything in season 6, for example, explain Sass's death, maybe even put H-Money together, and there won't be time left for Nisaac to get back together.
Besides, it's not like they've been hinting all this time that they were going to get back together. Nigel didn't even appear in the series this season, and when he did, he barely had any lines, let alone a storyline with Isaac.
So I think it's unlikely that this will happen in season 6.
I love ghosts, still. Sasappis is my favorite character, even when I feel like they make the odd choice every now and again with his storylines.
But…. Nissac was one of my favorite pairings when the show aired and I believe they had no intention of breaking them up.
I actually would have preferred a slower burn of them since the show lacks any will they/won’t they couple. The ghosts have all dated someone, even crushes.
I really mourn the timeline that nissac was endgame. And I’m not sure if they will ever get back together, either.
i dont want 22 episode seasons back. i dont want 8 episode seasons. i dont actually want a prescriptive number of episodes per season
its the era of streaming. we dont need to fil x number of timeslots.
i want tv shows to be able to determine for themselves what their optimal number of episodes per season to tell the story they want at the pace they want. maybe thats a 3 episode season. maybe thats a 50 episode season. i dont care, i just want the decision to be made for practical and artistic reasons rather than corporate ones
Dahling you simply must read this book! It’s all about this devious little caterpillar who simply gorges himself on all manner of divine things
