Workers hoping for miracle rescues; angry relatives of some of the missing clash with police as death toll nears 300
News is circulating on the Internet this week of yet another factory collapsing or burning down in Bangladesh. Having first started watching such news stories over a decade ago, I can safely say that while the increasing at these incidents is welcome, it often feels like Groundhog's Day.
100 years from now, what will people say about us, that we sat by and let factory after factory collapse - and worker after worker die.
Eminem's publicist reaffirms his client's tolerance of same-sex marriage
In light of the Supreme Court taking on the issue of same-sex marriage, I reached out to Eminem's publicist to find out if the rapper's position had evolved since the days of "My Name Is." His publicist, Dennis Dennehy, referred me to a 2010 interview with the New York Times in which Eminem says,
"I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want." I'll take that as progress...
Proposed: A Brief Campaign Against The Rightwing and For Accuracy
I'm going to put this as simply as I can:
1) Identify prominent public right-wing figures.
2) Search on them in the Google News Archives.
3) Update Wikipedia to more accurately convey a record of their lifelong activities.
For example, I researched and then updated Wikipedia's entry on Kris Kobach, who authored the xenophobic Arizona law SB1070. He also, as it turns out, supported the Afghan Mujahideen in the late 1980s when he was President of the Republican Club at Harvard.
It is possible, I suppose, to imagine an extraordinary circumstance in which it would be necessary and appropriate under the Constitution and applicable laws of the United States for the President to authorize the military to use lethal force within the territory of the United States.

"Innocence" screenplays and the producers
This via a reader. Not verified. Two screenplays are now readable online. Draft May 1, 2009 on Gawker and the Feb 25, 2011 version on Vice with a timeline by Jimmy Israel. On page 110 it mentions the President: "He knows the Islamic laws since Indonesia days." Reply: "Forget him!"
Jimmy Israel keeps talking about a 4th person, unnamed. Facebook posts of actress Cindy Garcia (who is now suing Nakoula and YouTube) indicate this would be Steve(n) Goldenberg. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2295868/
Can't Find It On Google? I'll Find It For You
Hello, readers. This is an experiment.
It has become easier and easier to find things via Google, but as you can see from some of the material that I've found on "Innocence of Muslims" and you will see on future topics, there are some things that are very difficult to find.
As a professional researcher and writer with experience in Web searching from the days of Altavista and Excite (remember those? :)), I can help you out. Here is the deal:
E-mail me at sauravsarkar2000 AT gmail DOT com and let me know that you need something found and what it is (a lengthy description is fine, since it's hard to always put into words something that you're having trouble finding on Google!).
Once I receive your e-mail, I'll do a preliminary search for free. If I find what you're looking for, I'll send you back the answer. If I don't, I'll let you know what my rates are per hour to continue the search both on and offline and you can let me know how much money you're willing to spend, work out details, and we can come to an agreement, if you're still interested. If not, no worries!!!
And, of course, the best way to do this is to bounce ideas back and forth, so if you're willing to participate, please let me know that in the e-mail as well! It's more fun that way, and can make things easier!
The man known as Sam Bacile has been arrested, reports the Smoking Gun. Nakoula B Nakoula, aka Sam Bacile, the producer of the anti-Muslim film "Innocnece of Muslims, was arrested for probation violations. While the article does not specify the specific charges, based on the terms of his probation, it has been speculated in reporting that his use of other identities and his use of the Internet might land him in some trouble.
When I spoke to criminal defense lawyer Grace Ayers about this issue a few weeks ago, she also felt that it was possible Nakoula would be imprisoned as a result of probation violations related to his involvement in the film. There is also information here on a possible link between Nakoula and to a very Islamophobic Coptic pastor.
More later, if warranted.
If you have been following this tumblr, you know that I have been research and tracking important stories on how "Innocence of Muslims" came to be, came to be known, and came to be the cause of widespread protests.
I am not sure how I missed the linked piece, dated 9/13, nor how accurate its claims are, but it offers a great overview of how the little-known trailer of the anti-Muslim film came to be widely known. The piece implicates Egyptian Salafist TV host Sheikh Khaled Abdulla, who aired the film trailer on his television show, generating web traffic for the YouTube clip.
I feel more comfortable now in my understanding of the story of how the trailer for "Innocence of Muslims" became viral in Egypt, and, after the consular protests in Egypt and Libya, globally. As the piece linked describes the process:
The original trailer of Innocence of Muslims was posted to YouTube by Bacile in July, but never gained attention until last week when it was translated into Arabic and linked to by an Egyptian-American Copt Morris Sadek in an Arabic-language blog post. Around that same time, Koran-burning Florida Pastor Terry Jones began promoting the film to practically no effect in the U.S. But it did gain the attention of a Glenn Beck-style TV pundit in Egypt: Sheikh Khalad Abdalla, a host on the Islamist satellite-TV station al-Nas. On Sept. 8, Abdullah lit the match that set this entire international incident in motion and broadcast an offensive clip of the trailer in which a man playing Muhammad calls a donkey "the first Muslim animal."
Interesting material.
Original Reporting: More Cast Members From "Innocence of Muslims" Exploring Lawsuit
Multiple media outlets reported today that Cindy Lee Garcia, an actress appearing in the trailer to "Innocence of Muslims", has filed a lawsuit against producer Nakoula B Nakoula aka "Sam Bacile" and YouTube, which hosts the video clip. “Innocence of Muslims” is the anti-Muslim film whose trailer set off protests and attacks on U.S. and other Western compounds in the Middle East.
Several other cast members are also exploring legal reprisals, as the New York Daily News and Indy Star.com have reported. I spoke with Grace Ayers, one of the lawyers working with them, who informed me that actors Dan Sutter and Bob Woodruff and an actress who has chosen not to make her name public are working with her and fellow lawyer Jeffrey Steinberger on civil action.
Woodruff does not appear in the trailer, but said he was part of the cast of the film, playing a "caravan man" in footage that was not used. The unnamed actress and Sutter both appear in the YouTube trailer for "Innocence of Muslims", said Ayers.
With the legal effort in its early stages, no target for civil suits nor amount of damages have yet been set, said Ayers. The legal team is interested in investigating issues such as the financing of the film and organizational involvement in the production, she said. Ayers added that an additional cast member was considering joining the group as well.
According to Ayers, her clients are scared ; she said the actress involved in the legal effort is fearful enough to have left her home only twice since the film became a public issue. Woodruff, with whom I spoke with via the telephone on Saturday, did not sound overly frightened, saying it was better for the issue to be discussed openly.
In many ways, what Woodruff told me echoed what many other cast members have said regarding the production of the film, including that he had no idea that the film would eventually be used to attack Islam or Mohammed.
The actor said he was motivated to pursue legal action by the “wrongness” of changing a relatively innocuous film through dubbing and editing to its present state. When he agreed to participate in the project, Woodruff said, he believed that the film was “some sort of historical documentary”, not the anti-Muslim film that the public is now familiar with.
The change in the content of the film without the cast members knowledge opens up several legal avenues, according to Ayers. She said that she and Steinberger were looking into the applicability of defamation and fraud statutes. No specific target nor amount of damages has yet been set, said Ayers, but Nakoula's legal representation had been contacted today by the team.
Woodruff cautioned against drawing unfair conclusions about those who participated in the film. “It’s just one particular man’s interpretation, not how the American people or the cast and crew feel about Islam or Mohammed,” he said, referring to the producer of the film Nakoula B Nakoula aka “Sam Bacile”.
The actor also expressed regret about his role in the film. “I feel really bad that someone was hurt because of something I did,” he said.
I was prompted by a different article on proposed links between the Islamophobia industry and "Innocence of Muslims" to link what I consider the best argument put forward so far. As it stands now, it should be taken seriously, though it is not of itself proof.
