some of y'all just want a book report on a nearly 3,000 year old story and some of us want to see a man's personal interpretation of one of the oldest written stories we still have even if it's flawed

listen on one side i agree, but on the other i would have liked for odysseus to be odysseus and not any generic interchangeable modern nolan protagonist. that's the only real gripe i have with this movie (i have many gripes with nolan in general but those concern all of his movies lol)

#when the point nolan is making with this adaptation is “Odysseus burned the world he knew down and therefore the war followed him home”#which is. prescient to a certain very large and powerful north american country Nolan resides in#let stories be adapted for the times the people adapting them are living in.

like i get these tags of yours, and i do partially agree that it could be an interesting modern interpretation (maybe even very interesting given the real historic mystery surrounding the bronze age collapse of mycenae.)

BUT on one hand he didn't change the story and its presentation enough for this interpretation to have punch, and on the other hand he changed the main character too much for the original archetype of the story to be recognizable.

he chose a muddled way that doesn't hit. a good way to make a movie about this interpretation would be with a main character that acts like odysseus (e.g. isn't fully conscious about what he wrought nor does he feel guilty about using his smarts to win a war) but with more surrounding events and elements that center around these consequences of the war. even an adaptation set in modern times would be better and - ironically - more faithful and recognizable.

you can't write the odyssey with hector taking the place of odysseus, and i'm sorry to say there's more of odysseus in some unrelated marginally-influenced media (e.g. a couple main characters in the show black sails) than there is in this movie.

see this is a problem, because at this point it might be a good movie about the atomic bomb (and he'd already made one obvs) but it's not the odyssey. not unless it's recognizable as the odyssey in some very core elements and characters. like this is not a compliment to the movie imo. it's like saying "the man turned The Lord of the Rings into a story about the stock market crash of 2008 and people are acting as if that isn't the sickest shit ever". at that point just make yet another movie about the 2008 financial crisis but don't call it LOTR. make yet another hollywood movie about how war is very bad and your hero is very good and honorable, but don't call it the odyssey.

ironically this reinterpretation would have worked much better as an adaptation of the iliad given the main characters and themes of that epic, but i guess he didn't want to do the iliad because there was already troy (2004) as a relatively recent holywood adaptation.

TL;DR it's NOT about costumes or setting or historicity for me; it's about the very fundamental aspects and themes of this iconic mythic story, and about the main character that drives the whole thing and creates those aspects.

Last song: I’m technically the “DJ” at my job since I lent my Bluetooth Speaker to the Kitchen. So, I play a lot of random Spotify playlists I don’t know the songs 50% of the time. Spotify is saying it’s “All Time Low” by Jon Bellion, which I know nothing about. The last song I liked was “Dark Side” by SkyDxddy which I would love to draw an Animatic with.

Currently watching: I am currently on a movie binge with my s/o. We are watching the Hobbit Trilogy after finishing Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Also, I been watching him play the new Yoshi game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, for the Switch 2!

Current obsession: Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. EVERYONE IS FALLING FOR CROSSHAIR HELP! Except Mimi and Hunter who IMMEDIATELY hit it off and made the 60$ on the game worth it. They are the only two married with a child.

something that i loved about this final and that i found a bit unexpected is how much and how easily jannik smiled (and sometimes even joked with his box) throughout. it even shocked some of the commentators

and to think that it was a very tense and important slam final with an extremely frustrating type of opponent (extremely big server so you can't easily get into his serve games and you have very few chances)

i loved seeing him able to find some moments of fun on court and i think it helped him at least a bit
