The Genesee River Killer
Serial Killer Arthur Shawcross began his reign of terror in May of 1972, when he brutally sexually assaulted and murdered 10 year old Jake Black. Shawcross lured the young boy into the woods where he strangled him. Jake was found five months later, but with no leads, no one was arrested for his murder. A few months later, 8 year old Karen Anne Hill disappeared. She was found sexually assaulted and murdered under a bridge. Karen had mud and debris forced into her throat and clothing, as well.
Thankfully, a neighbor Shawcross with Karen by the bridge before she disappeared. In October of 1972, he was arrested for her murder. He confessed to her murder, as well as the murder of Jake Blake. Due to the lack of evidence tracing him back to Jake Blake, the charges were dropped against him. Shawcross was sentenced to 25 years for the murder of Karen Anne Hill.
Surprisingly, Shawcross was released on parole after serving 15 years in 1987. Authorities decided to seal his criminal record, as he was forced to leave Binghamton, NY after a public outcry occurred against the child killer being relocated to the area. Shawcross was then able to relocate to Rochester, NY, where after a year, his murders resumed.
In only a span of 2 years, Shawcross sexually assaulted, murdered, and mutilated 12 women, a majority of them being sex workers and drug users. His first victim, in Rochester, was 27 year old Dorothy Blackburn. She was found in the Genesee river, strangled with bite marks around her groin area on March 24th, 1988.
Next, 28 year old Anna Steffen was murdered on September 4th, 1989. Shawcross strangled and dumped Anna in a similar manner as Dorothy Blackburn. Due to her body being found far away from Blackburns, police didn’t think that this was the work of serial killer.
In October 1989, 59 year old Dorothy Keeler. She was strangled. Only 6 days later, 25 year old Patricia Ives was found, strangled as well. Due to this link, the press grew interested in the murders. They even name the murderer “the Genesee River Killer”.
June Scotts murder showed Shawcross growing and experimenting as a murderer as she was found strangled as well as mutilated after death. Shawcross removed her labia and gutted her from her throat to her crotch area. Scott was found on Thanksgiving.
29 year old Elizabeth Gibson was found on November 27, 1989. She was found in Wayne county. Before her disappearance, Gibson was seen with a suspect called “Mitch”. After the murder of Dorothy Keeler, police found out that there was a regular among sex workers that they called “Mitch”. They described him as “prone to violence”.
On December 31st, 1990, police found pants belonging to 20 year old Felicia Stephens. This lead police to conduct an aerial search of the area. This lead to the discovery of the body of 33 year old June Cicero on January 2, 1990. She was laying on the surface of the frozen river by a bridge.
Instead of retrieving her body, the authorities decided to keep surveillance on the area as they profiled that the killer would come back to the scene of the crime to relieve the pleasure of the experience. Thankfully, they were right.
Arthur Shawcross was apprehended after he was caught masturbating and urinating on the bridge where Junes body was found. He finally confessed after jewelry belonging to June Cicero was found in his girlfriend possession. Shawcross also confessed to the murders of Maria Welsh and Darlene Trippi. His confession ended up being 80 pages long.
During his trail, he tried to plea insanity as he claimed he was sexually abused as a child as well as suffering from PTSD due to fighting in the Vietnam war, where he claimed to have cannibalize 2 women and decapitate many children. He was declared sane and was convicted of 10 counts of second degree murder in Monroe county and 1 count of second degree murder in Wayne county. He was given 250 years in prison. Shawcross died of cardiac arrest on November 10th, 2008
Cathy Cesnik was a Catholic religious sister who taught drama and English at an all-girls high school in Baltimore, Maryland. On November 7, 1969, Cathy left her apartment to run some errands. At 4:40 AM the next morning, her car was discovered covered in mud and illegally parked across from her apartment complex. But there was no sign of Cathy in or anywhere near the car. Police searched everywhere for her, but they were unable to find any trace or clue as to where Cathy might have disappeared off to. Until two months later. In January 1970, a hunter and his son found a woman’s decomposing body in a landfill. The body was confirmed to be that of Cathy Cesnik. The autopsy revealed she had died from an intracerebral hemorrhage after being hit in the left temple by a blunt instrument, which had fractured her skull as a result. Maggots were discovered inside her mouth and trachea as well. Years after the discovery of her body, many dark secrets began to emerge when a few women came forward claiming they were sexually abused by Father Joseph Maskell, one of the priests who worked at the school. Soon, Cathy allegedly found out about the abuse and tried to protect the girls. The case remains unsolved, but it is widely believed Sister Catherine was killed to keep her mouth shut.

The Life Failures of Four Big Serial Killers
Ted Bundy: Dropped out of law school several times, never held a job for very long, was rejected by most of the law schools to which he applied due to mediocre LSAT scores and unimpressive (B average) grades, signed his own death warrant by rejecting a guilty plea.
Jeffrey Dahmer: No friends, no boyfriends, barely made it through high school and flunked out of college after a semester, was discharged from the army before completing his tour of duty due to alcoholism, held menial jobs his entire life, was eventually fired from his menial jobs, lived in a shithole apartment in a bad area of Milwaukee, was evicted from said shithole apartment, was a severe alcoholic, was at one point homeless and sleeping on the beach in Florida shortly after his army discharge, lived with his grandmother for years.
Richard Ramirez: No jobs his entire adult life? Addicted to cocaine, held no steady place of residence, no close friends, no girlfriends, had awful teeth, only experienced sex with women he violently coerced into the act, smelled terrible
Ed Kemper: No close friends or girlfriends, only experienced sexual intercourse with corpses, lived with his mother, held only menial jobs.
Margaret Pole: The Countess of Salisbury and Her Haunting Legacy
December 06, 2025
The Tower of London has witnessed countless tragedies, but few are as shocking as the execution of Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury, in 1541. A noblewoman of royal blood, respected for her piety and intelligence, she was condemned without trial and put to death in one of the most gruesome executions of the Tudor age. Her violent end left such a mark on history that her ghost is said to linger still, replaying her desperate final moments.
Margaret Pole was born in 1473, the daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, and Isabel Neville. This made her the niece of Edward IV and Richard III, and one of the last surviving members of the Plantagenet dynasty. Orphaned at a young age, she was raised under royal guardianship and later married Sir Richard Pole, a loyal supporter of Henry VII. Together they had five children, including Reginald Pole, who would become a cardinal and later Archbishop of Canterbury.
Margaret lived much of her life in service to the Tudors. She was governess to Princess Mary (later Mary I) and was admired for her dignity and devotion. But her royal blood made her a potential threat, and her son Reginald’s outspoken opposition to Henry VIII’s break with Rome placed her family in danger.
In the late 1530s, Henry VIII grew increasingly paranoid about challenges to his authority. Reginald Pole’s criticism of the king’s religious policies enraged Henry, who turned his fury on Reginald’s family. Margaret was accused of treason, though evidence was flimsy and she was never formally tried. She was imprisoned in the Tower of London for two years, enduring harsh conditions despite her age.
On 27 May 1541, Margaret was led to Tower Green. At 67 years old, she was frail but dignified. The usual executioner was absent, and an inexperienced man was brought in his place. What should have been a swift beheading turned into a horror. Chroniclers recorded that Margaret attempted to flee around the scaffold as the executioner hacked at her head, neck, and shoulders. It took multiple blows to kill her, leaving witnesses horrified.
Her body was buried in the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, alongside other victims of Tudor tyranny. The brutality of her death shocked contemporaries and was remembered as one of the darkest stains on Henry VIII’s reign.
Margaret Pole’s violent end gave rise to chilling ghost stories at the Tower of London.
Reenactment of her flight: Visitors and guards have claimed to see a spectral woman running in panic across Tower Green, as if trying to escape the executioner’s blows. This apparition is said to replay her final desperate attempt to flee.
Phantom cries and screams: Some report hearing faint cries or the sound of a struggle near the site of her execution, especially at dusk.
Restless presence: Unlike Lady Jane Grey’s calm apparition, Margaret’s ghost is described as frantic and tormented, reflecting the injustice and brutality of her death.
Her haunting is one of the most unsettling at the Tower, a spectral echo of the horror she endured.
Margaret Pole was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1886, remembered as a martyr of faith. Her story endures as a reminder of how dynastic politics and Henry VIII’s paranoia destroyed even the most loyal servants. The ghostly legends surrounding her execution keep her memory alive, ensuring that her tragic fate is not forgotten.
Margaret Pole’s life was marked by loyalty, dignity, and faith, but her death was a spectacle of cruelty. The Tower of London holds her story in its stones, and according to legend, her spirit still runs across Tower Green, forever reliving her desperate attempt to escape the executioner’s blade. Whether one believes in ghosts or not, her haunting presence is a powerful symbol of the brutality of Tudor politics and the enduring echoes of history.
Is there ANYBODY in the true crime community that DOESN'T idolize/meme-ify/romanticize killers??
Brittney Briggs was only 24 years-old when her life was tragically taken inside her Las Vegas, Nevada home. The young mother was found murdered inside her residence on February 10th, 2017. To this day, Brittney's killer(s) have still not been brought to justice.
According to the LVMPD, friends of Brittney began to worry on February 10th after they learned she had not shown up to a pre-arranged appointment. The friends went to Brittney's residence on Spindrift Court and called police as well. It was then that police discovered Brittney deceased inside the home. Brittney's daughter, who was only 3 years-old at the time, was found crying, but otherwise physically unharmed in her own bedroom.
Brittney had been brutally attacked by her killer(s). An autopsy revealed that she died from blunt force trauma and strangulation. Brittney's home also appeared to have been ransacked, as several items were missing from the residence. Despite this, investigators did not find any signs of forced entry at the scene.
While investigating Brittney's murder, detectives learned she had recently started a new job as a tax preparer shortly before her death. Additionally, detectives also learned that Brittney "often sold items online and unknown person(s) were known to come and go from her residence." Police noted that it's possible that Brittney's assailant was someone who arrived at the home under the guise of buying something.
Although she was only three years old at the time, Brittney's daughter was still able to provide some details about what she saw before her mother was murdered. The young girl told investigators that "someone told her to be quiet and put a blanket over her head." The frightened young girl remained in her bedroom until police later arrived at the home.
Brittney's death has been a devastating loss for her loved ones, especially as her murder remains unsolved. Her family is still hoping to receive answers and closure. If you have any information that could help solve the murder of Brittney Briggs, please contact the LVMPD’s Homicide Section at (702) 828-3521 or submit a tip online.
