i probably could get behind a version of the "gelphie can never reunite" argument where it's like louis and prior's "i love you" "good. i love you" "i really do. but you can't come back. not ever" in angels in america. and the point with gelphie is that they'll love each other forever but glinda's irrevocably harmed elphie and as much as elphaba wants to recapture their relationship at shiz she has to keep moving forward. and you can kind of look at nessa holding on to her relationship with boq and elphaba almost returning to the wizard to be with glinda in wonderful as moments that show how clinging to the past and being unable to let go is unhealthy and ties into the wider conservative/fascist obsession with returning to a glorified past. but i can't fully get behind this reading because i absolutely hate the implication of "your important relationship with your female companion in your formative years is nice but you ultimately have to give that up and integrate into normative heterosexual social structures by running off with prince strawboy." like i don't think we get anything out of another story where the conclusion for the female protagonist is happily ever after with a boring man. and fundamentally, while louis and prior end separated, the ending of angels in america is a testament to the resilience of the queer community and the value of human life. and i think in some ways wicked ends up undercutting the value of glinda and elphaba's relationship because it can't imagine female relationships being permanent fixtures the way romantic het relationships are. if it wasn't obvious angels in america is a better play than wicked the musical. and this is why glinda and elphaba have to stay together
