There's a recurring online tendency to aestheticize consensus itself. The imagined future village is full of emotionally compatible people who enjoy communal gardening, conflict resolution circles, acoustic folk music, mutual aid potlucks, and repairing bicycles together at sunset. Which is nice for the people who genuinely enjoy that lifestyle. But plenty of humans are solitary, prickly, obsessive, urban, nocturnal, sensory-seeking, technologically attached, contrarian, novelty-seeking, private, or just plain difficult. Those people do not evaporate after the revolution. They do not get Left Behind while you are Raptured into the Utopia. They become your neighbors.

So I know someone who lives in an intentional community of about 10 people in one big house. They've been doing this for like a decade now; there's a core of about 3 people who have been through every iteration of this community. Everyone in the house is a kind, thoughtful, caring person; they have a robust consensus-building process that takes into account conflicting preferences and doesn't just rely on majority rule; they're all compatible and carefully selected to be active members of the community (I sat in on the interview process while they were looking for someone to fill a room, it is extensive). Overall, while there are sometimes disputes and disagreements, the community is very harmonious overall.

Last year, their plumbing exploded and the landlord gave them 24 hours notice that the residence was unfit for habitation and they were going to be put up in hotels until the repairs were complete in about three weeks. What followed was, by all accounts, the ugliest dispute in the house. You see, some rooms are shared by couples, and some are occupied by single individuals. So how to split the savings from the difference in the cost of the hotel rooms versus monthly rent? If they did it by room, singles saved more. If they did it by person, couples with shared finances saved more. Some people were able to stay in their rooms in the upper floors, so felt they shouldn't be paying for the hotel rooms at all, even though the household had agreed to accept enough hotel rooms for everyone because they didn't know if the entire house would be condemned or, as it turned out, just the ground floor. They found a way to solve the dispute that left everyone pretty satisfied with the amount that they saved, but many people still felt it was unfair in comparison to how much others had saved. Ultimately, a couple of people left the community.

They're back in the house now. They're finding people to fill the rooms that were vacated. Several people are going to dispute resolution workshops (and learning that they organically arrived at quite a few methods that are recommended by experts). But the really instructive takeaway from this experience is that consensus is easy when there are no problems. But when there are big problems that affect people in different ways, consensus is hard even for people who like each other, generally agree, and are trying to work together to come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

It feels obvious to say in hindsight, but this blindsided a group of people who have been doing this for a decade, and have experienced disputes with people who did not have everyone's best interests at heart. So yeah, I agree with OP. If this is what it can look like in what I would say is a best-case-scenario group, it's good to be prepared for what it looks like when you have to work with a neighbor you dislike.

I think a lot of transmisogyny stems from this idea that people are really scared to see a dick. The reason bathrooms and locker rooms and hot springs keep being flash points is because these are all places where if a trans woman is using them, it's possible you might see her dick. A lot of transmisogynistic humor revolves around being traumatized because the subject saw a woman with a penis. And look, to a certain extent I sympathize. I'm not a fan of dick; I dont want this thing either. But if you want to be an ally to trans women, I think a big important step you can take personally is to examine your own reaction to the scenarios I described above, and recognize that a dick is just a body part a girl has sometimes. Seeing it as inherently sexual and/or traumatizing is a major wedge conservatives use to justify their rhetoric

Obviously, the fearmongering about changing rooms and bathrooms is nonsense, but phallophobia is a very legitimate fear in a society where penises are used to inflict violence. While, of course, people with vaginas can rape, getting raped by someone with a vagina doesn't carry the same social stigma because society does not treat vaginas as symbols of domination and destruction.

Think about the language used for penises and sex: ruin, destroy, fuck. The word 'fuck' itself has connotations of the direction of penetration, with negative meanings attached to being penetrated. See "fuck you" vs. "We're fucked".

Then there's purity culture and the fact that penises are seen as tainting the vaginas they come into contact with. Promiscuous women are treated as less valuable women. On some level, there is a social expectation to perform disgust over penises because performative disgust often successfully makes someone seem pure not only in action but thought.

Obviously, this all stems from patriarchy but we need to be considerate of oppressed people's learned self preservation reactions. The disgust itself isn't wrong, but disgust shouldn't dictate other people's freedoms.

I also don't feel that queer relationships are exempt from these sorts of tensions or contradictory desires, but in queer contexts these things are generally understood as just interpersonal conflicts rather than being elevated to culture war status.

Something I notice about your examples... while libertine women may be regarded as dirty, as bad women—bad at being women, emotionally demonstrative men are not simply "failing masculinity", but find themselves coded as feminine. Is there something like that, that works the other way? I'm sure there must be, but it's not coming to mind.

Regarding women's attitudes on male emotional vulnerability, another good analogy might be how some men praise makeup-free "natural beauty" in women but have no idea what natural actually looks like.

Continuing with this analogy, as I've pointed out before:

A lot of men seem to interpret the experience of "she asked me to open up, but when I did she bailed on me" as an intentional test by the woman, like a distaff counterpart of those "take her swimming on a first date" memes, but I suspect that in a majority of cases it's less deliberate and more analogous to when men say they prefer "natural beauty" but in practice think that a woman looks "unhealthy" when she does go completely without makeup.

In In August 2024, I was without electricity, phone or internet because of really bad storms with lots of lightning, rain and strong winds. We even have floods. We still live under the dictatorship constitution made during Pinochet's dictatorship installed by USA, and its politicians and families, whom own everything here and pay the owners of internet to have bots, make fake news, terror campaings, etc ploted to make the country sink and put a pinochetist nazi as president: josé antonio kast.

The war of USA (operation condor) against South America lead to the new president of Chile be a chilean german pinochetist nazi (his father a nazi liutenant that used the ratlines with the help of the Vatican to escape after exterminating ppl all over europe, for example in germany, italy, france and soviet union) and is proud of his nazi family which also helped to exterminate chileans and anyone in Chile during Pinochet's dictatorship. He even is memeber of a fundation dedicated to the creator of the dictatorship constitution, pinochetist Jaime Guzman whom Kast loves deeply since his youth. Between his people there are torturers, nazis and neo nazis, a pinochetist nephew of a german pedo christian cultist (check Colonia Dignidad), families of german colonialists that made genocide of natives at the south of Chile and Argentina between XIX and XX century, pedos, etc. All upper class from european background, upper class from Chile, as well the cops, agents, and military. Kast was a piece of shit since childhood, being part of the chilean version of the nazi youth and helped Pinochet, and this past decade helped to put Bolsonaro and Milei in power in Brazil and Argentina.

He hates and wants to enslave South America, poc, women, children, workers, etc anyone that is not like him. He is proud of his nazi family and their work helping the Pinochet Dictatorship. My couple and I need to fly the country. We survived the ex president Piñera tortures and genocide in 2019/2020, we will not survive another extermination again.

We still unemployed even when we tried everything. Nothing worked. I got rejected in all and honestly I can no longer work because of my disability. I'm even losing my hair and growing grayhair. Now getting a job is asking to be tortured and killed.

My health is getting even worst. Chronic pain, chronic illnesses, long covid, celiac disease and lactose intolerance. Being autistic and having c-PTSD as well depression and fibromyalgia doesn't help and the violence never ends.

As far as I'm concerned, I've been on my own all my life (abusive family, my father tried to kill my mother, brothers criminals and abusers, now I'm alone and homeless bc I left the storage room in which i was living). My only support is my couple that also helps me as a caregiver and takes care of an old abusive cultist mother which pay the basic bills. My couple is the only family I have. This means having less money bc i make the bills bigger and the pinochetist nazi is gonna eliminate the money that elderly people are pay by the state for being a mother and a widow which is the money that pays for food and water and a roof over our heads. The father has already died. The neighbours are violent.

My couple fears that we end up in the streets, homeless. I fear that we will die under the dictatorship of Kast bc that's what what this ppl do, specially his family and all the other upper class families. The neighbours are gonna snitch on us. Their mother told a family of cops and agents (primal agents of dictatorship here) that she is a communist even when she is not (she an iliterate cultish evangelical with far right ideas) so we have a target in the face thanks to that. In the last big dictatorship, people (including kids and teens) were taken from their houses and jobs (specially students, univeritaries, teachers and culture workers, for example which is all our labels basically) and most never returned, being disappeared. Others were tortured so much that they died or ended up disabled and traumatized for life.

There are actually multiple reasons for this, most of them are intentional racism from the side of the israeli people and israeli government (as in it's not just governmental policies, which contribute heavily, but also indepedent attitudes to renting to Palestinian Muslims in particular).

The most obvious one is that israel is considered the "jewish state" and as such, the "land of israel" is for the "jewish people" meaning they own it and have unique rights to build and develop on it, whereas Palestinians are often refused to build. It's often viewed as an "invasion" for Palestinians with israeli citizenship to buy land and due to the Jewish National Fund and Israeli government, the "state land" is only "state land" for the jewish people, again, because of the jewish state. There are even jewish orgs that discourage "race mixing" between jews and non-jews that participate in preventing Palestinians from joining jewish towns.

Mayors, government officials, building owners, and land owners in general outwardly tell jews not to rent to Palestinian arabs, and there's no real government protection for Palestinians in this case. And this is an issue not just because it's fucking racist as hell, but because there have been no new Palestinian villages/towns since 1948 because of the government restrictions for Palestinians ability to claim land.

So for Palestinians, there isn't really another choice for them other than to "rent" from jews if they need a new house or something. Now of course, this doesn't meant they *dont* build — they do... But they run the risk of having their housing get demolished because they didn't get a permit.... that they wouldn't have gotten even if they applied for it.
