What is cleansing? When should I do it? How do I do it?
These are some of the questions I'll be tackling today. I hope this post will be useful to those who are not quite familiar with how to cleanse and why it's important for any witch or pagan practice!
Cleansing is clearing away energy from someone, something or somewhere.
When should I cleanse?
Whenever you need to clear away energy.
Personal opinion: you should cleanse yourself and your house at least weekly.
It is generally recommended that you periodically cleanse magical items and cleanse before and after any type of magical/ spiritual work. Cleansing before contacting deities (even if it's just prayer) is also considered "standard protocol" in some cultures, like in Hellenic paganism and Shintoism.
From my personal experience I do feel I can connect better with spiritual beings when I cleanse beforehand, but I believe my emotional state has a bigger influence on the matter. Cleansing generally calms me down too so –
Why should I cleanse?
The number one reason you'll see cleansing everywhere is because it is a way to help get rid of excess negative energy.
I'm not going to say you can clear away all of it because as living humans, we are constantly emanating energy and a lot of times it is "negative" energy. Which is okay, it's part of being alive. Plus, there are other factors that come into play.
However, cleansing often can help you stay in touch with spirituality and ease your mind since you'll be getting rid of excess (and oftentimes unwated) energy.
Cleansing also comes into play when you want to clear away any other kind of energy, for example, when you get a new magical tool (such as a tarot deck) or finish a magical working. You don't necessarily want the energy that was on that object or that spell sticking to you all day, you know?
How to prepare for cleansing?
First of all, gather your stuff. Gather everything you need and try to avoid interruptions.
I personally recommend you always do a physical cleaning up of whatever you are going to cleanse. Tidy up your house, take a shower, and clean your magical items (if possible).
Dirt and clutter feel bad, and it can distract the mind. Starting your cleansing in the physical plane can definitely make it more powerful in the astral too.
How do I cleanse?
Most cultures/religions/spiritual practices have their own way of doing things (ex: hellenic pagans have khernips), so first of all, do your research! And respect the fact that some things are out of your reach.
There are A LOT of techniques you can use to cleanse that are not particularly tied to a single culture and that can be done in many different ways. I'll quickly go through some of them, but it is by no means an extensive list.
Cleansing with the 4 elements:
Earth: I've mainly seen this in two ways, which are sending energy to the earth (something like grounding) and burrying objects.
Fire: commonly used together with air in smoke cleansing. There's also energy work that pulls energy and sends it towards the fire for cleansing (either a candle, a bonfire, or a visualization flame)
Water: mostly used for cleansing yourself or objects. It can be through herb baths and showers, rain/sea/river water, salt water, or sacred waters. For cleansing spaces, there are things such as water spray bottles and floor washes (though I've only seen this one being used in hoodoo). Careful with objects, some may not be resistant to water.
Air: generally the most common for cleansing spaces or people. Usually achieved by lighting up incense or herbs with cleansing properties and using the smoke to cleanse.
Sidenote: burning a herbs ≠ from smudging. Smudging is a native american practice that is closed to their people. Don't smudge, don't call some herb-burning smudging. It's not the same thing. Stick with what's appropriate for your culture.
Sun and moon: using sunlight or moonlight to cleanse (and often charge) yourself or objects. Always make sure what you are cleansing can actually be left in the sun and handle weather.
Crystals: Some crystals have cleansing properties, usually back ones (onyx, obsidian, black tourmaline), smoky quartz, and selenite, to name a few. Keep in mind that they usually need to be cleansed periodically, too.
Sound: Praying, chanting, singing, music, and using bells or drums are some ways you can use sound to cleanse.

What to do after cleansing?
That depends on your objective.
If you are cleansing a space, such as your home, and you want to keep it "clean" for longer, you can cast a protection spell.
If you are cleansing yourself or an object, you may want to do a Charging of some sort. When you cleanse, you are getting something out, which opens up space for the new, so you can use this as an opportunity to "fill in" with another type of energy.
Conclusion
Cleansing is very versatile and unique to each practice. There are a lot of things you can do that are fairly neutral, but in general, cleansing always has the same purpose and is done in a similar fashion.
Knowing what your tradition (if you have one) usually does to cleanse objects, people, and places can be very enriching, so do your research!

sometimes it feels like you can never win because one way or another, theres always someone criticizing you. People are nervous around you and its not necessarily anything you do. Protection magic is any type of work meant to protect A from B, and there are many ways that this can be done: prayers, charms, talismans, tokens, casting circles, setting up wards, visualization. The list can go on and on because it can be done in many different ways and combining many different methods.
But methods are not the topic of this post today. No, today I would like to talk about some key concepts to keep in mind before getting started on making protections and keeping them effective.
The Importance of Cleansing
Before doing any protection work I like to do a cleansing. Imagine you have an open water bottle, and because it was open, a lot of dirt has found its way into it over time. You decide to seal the bottle so no dirt comes in, but you don't pour out the old water, so you end up sealing it in. Yes, you'll keep more dirt from coming in, but the muck is still there.
It is easier to see this being applied to a physical location, but I personally also apply this to personal protective tokens. I feel they work better when you are taking care of your energies by doing regular cleanses and managing internal negativity.
Important Definitions
Protection ≠ Banishing ≠ Cleansing
I feel a lot of people are under the impression that these are all the same. I think they all work together towards a similar goal, but their jobs are different.
Protection: protecting something from something
Banishing: driving out entities
Cleansing: clearing out energy
You can do cleansing, banishing, and protection at the same time, but that doesn't mean they are the same. You can do a ritual including all of them, but you can also just do a cleansing or just do warding (which is a form of protection).
Note: cleansing is not restricted to “negative energy”. You can cleanse any kind of energy. Exemple: a friend of yours decides tarot is not for them and hands down their deck to you. If you wanna work with that deck it is highly advisable that you do a thorough cleansing of it and then infuse it/consecrate it with the energies you want. It's not that your friend has “bad” energy, it's just that you might not want to work with the same energies they have, or use a tool that has someone else's energy in it.
Not Necessarily a Lazy Job
One important thing with protection magic is that no matter how strong or how successful are at doing it is that it is not failproof. I have yet to see protection work that lasts forever, and there may be a few reasons for it.
Negativity also comes from within
Imagine you have a fish inside an open fish tank. Just like the bottle example earlier, you decide to put a lid on so you prevent leaves from falling into the tank and polluting the water. However, there's a fish, a living being in there, and it produces waste. It is impossible for the fish to live without producing waste. If you don’t regularly clean the water, ammonia and fecal matter will build up.
In this analogy, you are the fish. I am the fish. Humans literally cannot live without ever having a negative thought or feeling, it is part of our existence and we have to live with it. No one lives in constant bliss.
That doesn't mean we have to live in the muck though. That's why cleansing yourself is important.
No one is immune to the environment
Here I have another analogy for you. Imagine you're facing a harsh winter, but you are safe in the security and warmth of your house. Your house is protected from the cold so you don't even mind it. However, you have to go outside. You dress up, go out and you feel very, very cold. You could perhaps wear something warmer, but it will never feel the same as home. Yet it is better than going outside naked, no?
Same thing for energies. You can have protection, but depending on how strong the energy in the environment is you are sure to feel it to at least some degree. However it's best to have some protection than no protection at all.
And there is a difference between Feeling an energy and dwelling in it vs Feeling an energy and not letting it latch onto you.
Energy can wear off, and new energy can build up
Energy is ever changing, ever moving. If you do a strong protection spell once, it can last for a long while, but if you forget about it it will likely lose a lot of its strength over time. Some of what you put out there might wear off and be substituted by something else. The energy can also grow stale, which means it becomes less effective.
But if you do a strong spell every month you will not only make your protections stronger, but also constantly renew the energies and not let them stagnate.
So keep doing cleanses and every now and then give a boost to your protections so they are refreshed and recharged.
Note on "Negative Energy"
One of the main reasons someone might choose to do a protection ritual and a cleansing is to ward off negative energy. But is that really needed? What is "negative energy"?
Negative energy might feel like a sense of heaviness, dread, pain, sadness, feeling ill, angry, sad or anxious. Emotions produce and attract what we can call "negative energy", the same way it can make us feel those things.
And while I personally think nobody wants to feel them, we must understand they are not always bad at their core.
The uncomfortable feelings they can cause may also be a gateway for healing and transformation. Pain tells us there is something that needs to be worked on, that needs change.
If you are feeling negative, ask yourself why. Why does this bother me? What makes me feel this way? What can I learn from this pain?
If you happen to feel negative energy, it is good to cleanse and protect. But I advise you to always look for the source to see what can be done about it or what you can learn from it. Don't just try to use spellcasting to run away from your shit. Own your shit. Deal with it.
Otherwise, it will keep coming back no matter how much protection you have.
Conclusion
It is impossible to always be free from “negative energy” all the time, no matter how strong your protections are. But protections can absorb some of the blows that you would otherwise take and ease the ones you were going to take no matter what.
Protection magic alone will not solve all your problems. It is a great tool to help you keep your center and remain grounded, but it is not usually something you do once and forget. It is a continuous, ever evolving work, meant to be used in conjunction with other types of spellwork.
And most importantly, it can give you some comfort through the many trials of life.

An illusory protection works by shifting perception, so that you or a place becomes hidden or appears to be what it is not; or so that people who think of crossing or approaching the boundary become confused, distracted, or befuddled. Illusory protections are close cousins with glamours, which cloaks a person, place, or thing so that it is perceived differently than it otherwise would be. Perhaps the most common way to use illusory protection is through mirrors, which not only tend to return energies (as with aggressive protection), but also functions to make whatever is behind it invisible; the aggressor will only see their own reflection.
Illusory protection benefits:
When dealing with a particularly obsessive or dangerous enemy, the best defense is sometimes to just get off their radar.
Your defensive protections need to do far less work if enemies can’t even find their way to your doorstep.
Illusory protections are particularly powerful against humans, and are very valuable for keeping people away from a certain place.
This is perhaps the best method to guard against unwanted divination from other practitioners.
For the ethically-minded, illusory protection created with mirrors is somewhat aggressive, but will only ever send back what was sent to you; this is a form of justice which is less outright offensive than a purely aggressive ward.
Illusory protection drawbacks:
Illusory protections change what other people feel and perceive. You have the chance of harming your personal relationships if you start layering yourselves with perception-warping magic. It can change how people feel about you.
Spells with too broad an intent may cause all manner of problems for you, such as people getting confused when you speak, not understanding your emails, or chronically misinterpreting your writing. People might start talking about you while you’re in the room, forget to send you invitations or calls, lose your homework or application, run into you in hallways - even get into car crashes with you, because they just didn’t see you. Even more seriously, your food delivery driver might not be able to find your front door. I recommend employing long-term illusory spells gently and slowly until you see how they work for you..
Illusory protection will not stop environmental energies (unless mirroring is employed), making it ill-suited for empaths or others who need space from environmental energies.
Illusory magic is a poor filter. Defensive protections are better employed to create barriers which let some things through, but not others.
Illusory protection is ill-suited against spirits and beings who are Lunar or already well-versed in the ways of illusion.
Where and when to employ illusory protections:
As a supplemental layer of your defensive protections, usually on the outside of it.
When you only want some people to be able to see or perceive an entryway or space for what it truly is.
When the best course of action is for all attention to be off of you.
When you need it to be impossible for someone to successfully, coherently interact with you.
To specifically ward against other practitioners performing divination upon you.
When it suits your sense of protection and wellness to be perceived in a certain manner.
How to employ illusory protections:
Enchant mirrors with smoke, water, or Lunar energy to confuse, distract, or veil - respectively. Hang them up pointing outwards, towards whatever force you want to repel away.
As part of normal aura imprinting or shielding, transform your aura or shield to resemble the energies you want others to perceive. This may be cloaking yourself with the energy of a gray stone, a horrific scary monster, mirrors like a disco ball, or swirling oil-on-water that confuses and distracts.
A jar spell which combines water, oil, and dye to create confusing or enchanting swirls may then be further enchanted to distract and confuse.
Smoke, especially derived from Lunar sigils or protective texts, may be wafted around the area needed to be protected. The more smoke, the better.
Stones or other objects can be decorated with the energies or scenes desired to be perceived, enchanted unto that purpose, and carefully placed around a boundary.
A witch’s ladder tied up with correspondences which cause confusion, distraction, or illusions may be hung over a doorway or threshold.
Special illusions can be tied into certain articles of jewelry or other items to be carried. This technique is greatly enjoyed by business people or those who sometimes have to really put a certain foot forward.
Illusory protection correspondences:
Elemental and physical water, and its esoteric symbols. This includes most waters, especially drawn from a natural source which hypnotizes you with its motion and flow. The direction of water in your path, often west. All semi-opaque stones, especially smoky quartz, moonstone, and obsidian. Stones and plants of a Lunar nature, including willow trees. Plants which cause psychotropic effects, including many plants from the poison path. Cannabis flower, leaves, or extracts are particularly useful in spells of confusion and distraction. Any curious object from nature which fascinates the eye is well-employed as a vessel for illusory magic. Silver in any of its forms works powerfully well in this type of magic. Mirrors of every variety, especially with sigils or symbols added to the non-reflective side. Dazzling, man-made substances, like glittery gel or lava lamps, will also be of service. Symbols which swirl around and lead the eye in a confusing maze or pattern. Animals which protect by trickery and obfuscation, especially by camouflage, such as owls, octopi, cuttlefish, moths and butterflies (and a huge variety of insects), chameleons and geckos, non-venomous snakes, frogs, and lizards (especially consider the liminal, watery power of the toad), hares, squirrels and many other rodents, and fawns. The question arises what can we keep in an altar? Is it strictly for religious purpose? No. It is a way to show your dedication to a goal. Could be to connect with higher realms, to achieve your desired life, to work with different entities and various others.
Further you ask, can we only keep things which are expensive or typical? Again not necessary, in fact uniqueness comes from what it means to you. It could be from a basic item like picture of a deity (respect is important) to simple jewellery, offerings and various other things. Is it always a fixed and definite place? Well, it can be portable, it can be anywhere just a higher space than the ground.
Your make up box, your dressing mirror, your products all represent an altar. Because you wake up everyday, get in front of the mirror and decide that you would look beautiful no matter what, thus representing a goal. Your books, your wardrobe everything is your altar in a sense. Treat your life as if a sacred opportunity. And you will see yourself change.

Now coming back to altars, what do I keep/you can keep in altars as a beginner!
A cloth material, which has been blessed/charged with energy. It represents the base of an altar, symbolic of protection and warmth.
Mini stone statue/figurine/picture/representation of your deity/power/entity, whoever you are dedicated to. A medium to channel your energy towards them.
A source of fire. Could be candles/incense. Fire is another way to protect yourself. It keeps negative forces at bay. Bringing in positivity. You burn your insecurities and let the original self shine.
Offerings. They are a means of showing your respect and a way of asking for their help. And the acceptance of your proposal from their side. It is different for every entity. I generally keep rose petals/red colored things for my deities as the color is associated with them.
Something that represents you. If you are a witch, keep a thing which is reminiscent of your energy as that, example- your jewellery, even if broken, should be dear to you. If you are a diviner, keep your cards/divination tool.
Whatever you desire to manifest, should be first presented in front your entity. Lay your soul bare. Tell them why you desire it, be very honest. If you really are deserving and you have the will in you, you will get it. Also, be grateful for what you have at present. Thank them daily or atleast communicate on a regular basis.
Flowers/fruits- could be dried. Something of a life source. You can keep your birth flower/favourite fruit. The ambience it creates just lifts up the whole surroundings.
Crystals- they are totally optional. But real ones help you balance energies so well. Even better if you are aware of what crystals you actually need.
Coins/buttons/feathers/lost-found things. Feathers are a way of communication as well as warding off negativity. They bring about peace. Coins and buttons also carry energy. For me, they help in the divination process.
Ancestral item/antique/ancient art pieces or anything that has that energy. Something that is a souvenir of your generation. There is no magic on the conscious level of you don't involve/respect your ancestors. Magic isn't futuristic, it gains energy through past. This explains how karma got involved in magic and how magic was lost in the coming generations. Through your deeds, you decide the fate. If you have been chosen, show them that it was their best decision.
An element of mother nature. She is the one who is sustaining us. Let her in the place where the authentic self resides. After all, she deserves it.
There can be various other other things, for example cultural valuables, fancy figurines, mirrors(if you practice mirror magic), copper pots, charged water, spell jars, wands and so much more. You are the creativity in here. Make it the best.
