Hi, trans male Mental Health Professional here.

What transmeds don’t seem to understand is that in the United States, Gender Dysphoria is the diagnosis in the DSM-V needed to medically transition, but having dysphoria and being transgender are not the same thing.

On page 451 of the DSM V, Transgender is defined as “the broad spectrum of individuals who transiently or persistently identify with a gender other than their natal gender”.

Meanwhile, “Gender dysphoria refers to the distress that may(MAY) acompany the incongruence between one’s experienced or expressed gender and one’s assigned gender. Although not all( NOT ALL) individuals will experience distress as a result of such incongruence many are…”(Again, many, but NOT ALL).

On the next page, there is a set of criteria needed for the diagnosis of Gender Dysphoria for both children, and for adolescents/adults. For adolescents and adults, only 2 of the 6 criteria must be met for a diagnosis.

As you can see, you can identify as another gender, and have a strong desire to be treated as another gender, but you DO NOT need to hate your body parts. It also does not specify that you have to identify as strictly male or female, so non binary people that are dysphoric can transition if they so choose, because they meet the criteria of being transgender as well as having gender dysphoria.

In any case, dysphoria is different for everyone. Some people may think something they experience is not dysphoria, when it actually is. Some trans people may strongly identify as male or female, but not particularly care what their body looks like. For some people, dysphoria changes and becomes more or less severe at certain points of transition. Everyone is different.

Tl;dr, transmeds are saying information that is medically and socially recognized to be false, and are targeting people out of their own ignorance. You do not need to be miserable to identify as a gender that is not the one you were assigned at birth, which is what being transgender is.

It’s not a matter of agreeing or disagreeing, transmeds are wrong.

not to be inclusionist on main but i find it shocking and frankly a little horrifying how easily the online LGBTQ community has turned on itself in the past 2 years. like, i need you all to know: i’m not old. i’m 23. so that leaves about a bit less than a decade of me knowing i’m gay, and a bit less than that of me learning about my new family and friends and lifestyle and such, as well as a bit less for actively campaigning/being deeply involved in civil rights and social justice issues.

like, i don’t know if yall realize this if youre newer here but: this whole “asexuality exclusion” thing and this “queer is a slur” thing? this is new. this is only within the past two or so years that its gained any real momentum, the same with terfs and radfems. it wasn’t a concept. there were massive, massive rallies in support of our asexual community. it’s horrifying to me how simply and neatly we as a group have gone from “The A doesn’t stand for Ally” to “There is no A at all”.

and i need you all to know: this is not a coincidence that TERFS have risen up in roughly the same time period. i need you all to realize that when you talk about your exclusion of asexuals from our community, you are parroting well-known TERF and neo-nazi rhetoric.

I found an article written by a woman who pretended to be 11 year old girl online for 7 days, and it has a lot of descriptions of online sexual abuse of minors, but with the right point of view; minors cannot consent and have no agency in being sexually abused online, and it’s on adults to protect them from ever being put in the danger of becoming a target of predator. I’m going to post a link because I want all my underage followers to know how predators online talk, what they will say and demand of you, and to recognize on spot when someone is trying to sexually abuse you. If anyone has ever talked to you in this way online, if you recognize any of that behavior in someone you chat with, you should know that what they’re doing is illegal and a crime against you. You are more than allowed to shut that conversation down and block the predators, and if you can, report them. it’s okay to, if you have a friend who’s experienced neglect, try and help them learn how to take care of themselves. saying things like “hey, do you think you could try to eat at least one vegetable per day?” or “that infection looks pretty bad, do you want to go to a doctor?” is genuinely helpful. but belittling us for not already knowing these things is completely unproductive and unnecessarily cruel.
