I'm starting to go the opposite direction of all the "you're a literal baby infant until 25 bc your bwain is a baby bwain :(" shit

We should be treating teens as more adult than we do. I don't mean some lowering the age of consent creep shit, I mean presuming competence. Get a job, learn life skills, learn to cook, be fully responsible for a pet, walk places alone (in daylight) or with a friend, have intergenerational friendships, teach skills to littler kids, be someone people can trust with more than wiping their own ass. Be someone they themselves can trust to do stuff and go places. We're stealing children's confidence by treating them like they can't do anything. Treat them like they can and should do many adult things and more will find the confidence to practice at them.

Yes, the brain isn't finished growing when you're like 15. No, you shouldn't get treated like a preschooler till it is. The general experience of adulthood is like 90% practice 10% maturity I think. The maturity is needed but it doesn't account for much if you just do nothing.

^^^^ Total agreement. I teach high schoolers, and I'm mystified at the way I hear some adults talk about teens. The kids I work with are by and large smart and competent. Sometimes they don't know how to be helpful, but if I let them know what I need, and don't talk to them like they're five, they'll step up and do whatever. They're ready. Most of them want to run out and grab stuff from my car for me, or prep alcohol lamps for labs, or collect up glassware. (Or if they don't actually want to, they're willing to help anyway.) A month or so into the semester I usually have a couple folks who carry my stuff in for me, and help me haul gear out, and the school admin is always telling me the kids love me since they carry things for me, but honestly all I do is ask for help, show them what I need, and then treat them like they're fully capable (which they are).

Yeah, exactly. At fifteen, you can do the dishes and walk the dog and you can help out your teacher. The most bizarre interactions I’ve had over my decade plus now of teaching have been with parents who seem to think their child is basically a sentient log.

Like no, your high-schooler can answer me himself, you don’t have to interpret vague grunts from him like he’s a baby. And like Aster said, they usually DO want to do these things. They want to have more advanced conversations, they want to go grab your papers off the printer or help you carry boxes. Kids like to be useful and feel like they’re actively participating in the world around them (because they are).

I’m actually really tired of the widespread infantilization of anyone below the age of like... forty. Two ideas can coexist - I am young relative to others and still learning how some things work, and I am also a full grown adult who can take some responsibility for my actions.

Same with teenagers. Let them be people. They’ll have to be adults their entire lives, let them figure some of it out when they’re still young and in a safe environment

It’s the Nasir-ol-Molk masjid in Shiraz! Dating from the Qajar dynasty, it’s well known for its muqarnas and Orsi glass. It’s best to visit in morning and late afternoon as the glass is designed to catch and amplify the light at those times, which spreads rainbows throughout the western prayer hall and parts of the courtyard. It’s also affectionately nicknamed the “pink mosque” as pink is one of the major hues used in the tiles.

Forbidden Plants Of Palestine tatreez motifs

Shereen Quttaineh: 'For countless generations, Palestinians foraged and harvested the fruits of their land, from wild plants like tumble thistle (Akkoub), medicinal thyme (Za’atar), and wild sage (Meramieh) to cultivated staples like olives, oranges, and watermelons.

Like all other facets of their lives, their autonomy over their own food is under occupation. In addition to confiscating farmlands and uprooting centuries-old fruit trees, the occupation imposes oppressive laws forbidding Palestinians from picking and growing the plants that comprise their culinary, medicinal, and cultural traditions. Despite this, Palestinians continue to find ways to resist.

Each tatreez motif documents a “Forbidden Plant of Palestine,” carrying a story of connection and resilience, offering a reminder of the enduring bond between the people and the land that nurtures them.

Palestinian women have long documented their stories and surroundings through embroidery, preserving history and identity in every stitch. Through creating my own motifs for the plants that Palestinians are restricted from accessing on their own land, I am continuing this tradition—using thread as a form of resistance. This project is my way of documenting apartheid, reclaiming narratives, and strengthening my connection to my roots and identity. Each tatreez motif is a testimony of endurance, belonging, and the fight to keep our heritage alive.

I created these motifs to be used for non-commercial purposes. The Palestinian cause is not for sale and should not be exploited for profit. If you wish to share or use these motifs, proper credit is required.
