not to be a hedonist but. pleasure IS the whole point, my loves. we are made for pleasure. humans have not survived out of spite or sheer grit or simply to make more humans. we live for pleasure. the pleasure of licking the last delicious crumbs off your fingers and feeling sunlight on your skin and massaging a loved one's shoulders. we're made to fill our bellies with delicious food, to nap in soft grass, to touch each other in joy and comfort.

there is no shame or guilt in our bodies doing what they were made to do. and we are made for pleasure.

It seems like every humanities grad and creative on the internet has decided that the only way they will survive the future is by enshrining copyright laws more expansive than ever before and by being allowed to sue anybody for having looked at their work and had a single thought about it.

Permanent DMCA regime and an end to fair use seems pretty dystopian from where I'm sitting and the fact that the comments on this post are full of uwu smol bean creatives who are very proud to say things like "I don't care how AI works, it's evil" but can't imagine how their attempts to define model training as theft might have downstream problems that harm everyone BUT megacorporations is exactly the issue that I'm trying to articulate.

The problem is not that my elderly colleague doesn't know how to use a software program, the problem is that I'm watching liberal arts majors gleefully cheerlead attempts at implementing absolutely devastating legislation because they don't understand laws or computer science.

Many people in the comments are saying “trauma”, but this is actually a very normal occurrence. It’s called Childhood Amnesia, and it’s a process which, as the brain reorganizes itself for cognitive thought that is developed in late childhood, it changes the Accessibility of those memories during recall. Many childhood memories are available to the person, but they will not be remembered during regular recall activity, you have to “trick” your brain into remembering with different tactics.

This is because there are two parts to memories - their encoding and their recall. The encoding determines their availability, their recall determines their accessibility. The reason why trauma memory and childhood amnesia are different is in this distinction. Trauma memory is often encoded differently, bypassing to the limbic system where it is stored as intrinsic memory. It can’t be recalled because it was never encoded. Childhood amnesia, however, seems to indicate that the memories are encoded, but we lose access to them as we age. This is most likely due to the development of brain structures that fundamentally change our encoding and recall of memory as we get older.

This is an important distinction, because trauma memory is “stored in the body”, i.e. you get triggers that send your body into a cascade of uncontrollable feelings, sensations and reactions. Whereas childhood memories won’t generally do that, they are just recalled at odd times with odd associations.

I feel like SAWTOWNE’s “Confessions of a Rotten Girl” is so good partially because of how it makes even people who may dislike fujoshis sympathize with Miku, and it’s interesting that it’s not actually done by painting her as “one of the good ones”. Everything that’s despised about fujoshi culture, Miku explicitly is portrayed as doing.

Disliking female characters on the basis of them “getting in the way” (and being quite misogynistic about it to boot), sexualizing and shipping men in real life (the men portrayed in the song are her teachers), and even the yaoi paddle known for being used to sexually harass cosplayers…

… all these aspects are there. Hell, one of the most disliked part about fujoshi culture from a social justice standpoint — the language of describing queer relationships as “sinful” — is the whole basis behind the song.

However, SAWTOWNE, instead of lessening that toxic trait, “yes, and”s it. “Yes, she calls queer relationships sinful, as a (presumably) heterosexual woman who finds their relationship gratifying. AND, the reason she does that is because she is a sexually repressed Christian who feels guilty about having any sexual desire whatsoever.”

I think that one (very clever!) addendum makes it so any discomforting aspects to the song takes a backseat. Instead of being a song about trying to resist an interest in yaoi / The Gays specifically, it more so becomes a song about trying to resist any “abnormal” sexual desires, which makes it very easy to like this version of Miku, even as someone who very much dislikes the aspects of fujoshi culture she represents.

Plus we need more gooner girl rep anyway, lol. (As a comment on the video said: close enough! Welcome back Plus Boy!)
