Writing translyrics is a creative process and like all creative processes, you are bound to whatever boundaries you set for yourself. No one but you sets the rules on how or what you should be writing.
A "good" way or a "bad" way is subjective to the reader/writer, so I shouldn't be dictating to you how you should go about writing your translyrics. That would only hinder your own individual creativity and style.
I will however leave you with a few questions that may help you set up some boundaries for yourself so you can create your own style:
Are you aiming to convey the original meaning of the song (including the metaphors) or just convey it in your own words?
Do you want to literally translate it down to every single word or are you okay with paraphrasing it to give a gist of the original meaning?
Do you want to strictly follow the syllable count?
Are you okay with adding extra words if there aren't enough syllables?
Do you want to keep it in the original melody?
Those are only a few questions I can come up with at the moment. Of course, there are many more but this should give you an idea of what you need to do to come up with your own way of writing translyrics.
If you have trouble understanding a song, I suggest that you look through several different translations (not all translations are accurate or grammatically correct!) or ask a Japanese-speaking friend for help. Some songs may also require you to do some research to fully understand: for my own set of Romeo and Cinderella lyrics, I had to look up some fairy-tales to understand their context in the song.
The level of difficulty in writing translyrics is really up to how much effort you want to put into what you write.

Hi, I have a really weird, specific question, so sorry! I want to record some vocals using a dynamic and an audio interface, but I can't get anything to be recorded on the computer. The best I've gotten is recognition of the interface on the recording program. If you want specifics, I have an okay dynamic mic with an XLR butt, XLR-XLR and XLR-1/4 cables, steinberg CI2 interface, and audacity for recording (I was too lazy to find the registration number for the bundled cubase orz) Thanks!
This is really specific and requires a lot more detail to deal with, so we are unable to answer this. You may have to do a thorough search online or contact Steinberg in order to solve your problem.
Meanwhile, I suggest you try getting the bundled Cubase as the CI2 is made to be most compatible with Steinberg software. If it's Cubase LE, the activation has to be done on MySteinberg and requires you to sign up for an account. Also, be sure that your interface drivers are up to date.

This is only a guess but he probably used some sort of autotuning effect with a bit of doubling on the melodies, and autotune + slight stereo widening on the harmonies.

Hi, this is Tune. I’ve been in the community for awhile and I interact enough with both sides (NND & YT) and I’ve noticed some things. I also notice some questions directed toward ofurotaimu that don’t have a guide so I thought I might make a (informal) guide for certain things.
Etiquette
Don’t use over-excessive English and if you do, make sure it’s simple enough to be understood (in videos, in broadcasts, on twitter, anything, etc unless it’s YouTube). Please avoid spamming NND videos with too much English, it tends to bewilder other watchers…
If you follow an utaite or producer or instrumentalist etc. don’t randomly reply them with random English (basically a restatement) or try to get attention in a flashy way like PLEASE REPLY TO ME @Gero2525. It’s ok to greet in a normal fashion or try to strike conversation by simple things like おはようございます or good morning, but just be aware of what you say.
Remember basic manners and you should generally be ok.
Support
It has come to my attention that a lot of people listen to covers from only YT reprints. In many cases the utaite or producer are upset about this so if you can, I recommend watching the original on NND. Especially since the English version of the site is up and running, it’s very easy to make an account and watch it.
You can help support your favorite utaite/producer/odorite, etc by watching on NND. Your views contribute to the rankings as well as mylisting. I feel like it’s a concept that people might not understand too well. Mylisting a video is something like favoriting a video. You can help your favorite artist by mylisting their videos, which contributes to the ranking system.
Where to find the mylist buttons: Above the comments section the button that has マイリスト or you can click the golden button above the comments next to the mylist button to とりあえずマイリスト which is kind of like mylisting for the moment but I’m pretty sure it counts toward the mylist count.
Off Vocals
I notice that a lot of people get their karaokes/off vocals from NicoKaras or other various karaoke videos. They usually have less quality after being put into a video and re-encoded (or um…something like that) so I highly recommend using the off vocals/instrumentals that the producer provides (that and the producer wants you to use them too, which is why they put it up!!) (it’s also higher quality~!). Most of the time producers link instrumentals in the description. It’s usually listed as オケ (oke) or カラオケ (karaoke) with the oke coming from karaoke followed by a link to the instrumental. Make sure to read the description of the video and even if you can’t read Japanese, you can still clicking on links that aren’t mylist links to check (although most cases they are indicated with オケ or カラオケ). If you can’t find a link to the instrumental you can try checking their mylists for links to their piapro account, where many vocaloid producers upload their works. Look for anything that says off vocal too, but from the original poster.
Credit
This doesn’t apply to everyone but I see a lot of covers without crediting and linking the original posters. It’s important to pay respect to the original creators so please put some effort into linking the original video or artwork. Additionally, zerochan isn’t a really a source so please make sure you research a little where the art comes from. Zerochan often takes art from pixiv or other sources without crediting or asking permission from the original artist. Please make sure that the artist is ok with you using the image or at the very least please credit and link to the original. If you’re looking for images to use, try using piapro (http://piapro.jp/ ). Its artwork is usually put up for anyone to use (often where off vocals are uploaded too) but still make sure to credit the artist and maybe even leave a thanks with a link to your video. Iirc you need an account but it’s not too hard to figure out.
I’m probably forgetting some things or leaving things out but if I remember I’ll make another post. I included some example screencaps showing you what I meant above ~ (Diem asked for the mp3 of acoustic ver of Shiwa so 8D and also that link on Osamuraisan’s video leads to his site that shows the tracks for the album, where you can buy it, and also the mp3s for the acoustic versions. buzzG’s Shiwa and Scop’s new song is used as examples) I hope this helps people in some way ><! TODAY I’LL REVIEW A PLUGIN THAT YOU CAN GET A TON OF BANG FOR THE BUCK. IT’S IZOTOPE’S NECTAR. IT’S MORE LIKE A MASTERING PROGRAM FOR VOCALS. WHETHER YOU WANT TO USE IT FOR MIXING OR TRACKING MODES IT SEEMS TO DELIVER ON ALL ENDS. JUST HAVE ENOUGH CPU POWER TO UTILIZE IT IN TRACKING MODE....

In my experience iPhone/iPod Touch microphones tend to catch a lot of background noise and static in their recordings, something that is usually undesirable when mixing vocal covers.
You'd particularly have a hard time mixing it in with soft acoustic instrumentals but you could probably get away with it in louder instrumentals if you tweak it with some EQ/filtering and maybe some noise reduction. It's not impossible to fix and remove the noise but it can be a hassle at times.
That said, it should be okay to use that for several dubs, but it is highly recommended that you get a better mic as soon as possible. Otherwise, you'll find not only yourself frustrated but people who want to collaborate with you as well. It's hard dealing with a hard-to-fix microphone quality.

But I would recommend ones from pixiv or deviantART so you know who to credit if ever you do use them! Both of these sites are now available in english, so you're free to search with the right keywords for you!

You simply need to get a USB audio interface that is able to supply "phantom power". Audio interfaces can range from around US$50 to US$400, and produce great audio quality.
All you need to do is connect the audio interface to your computer, attach the microphone cable from your mic to your interface and press the phantom power button. There's really nothing else to it! There should be detailed instructions included with the audio interface you buy so you don't need to worry too much.
Just be sure to cross-check how much power/voltage your microphone needs with how much the interface can supply. If you get an audio interface that supplies too little, your mic won't work. If you get one that supplies too much, your mic can get permanently damaged.
If you need help choosing the right audio interface or understanding how to use your mic, you can ask the staff at any store that sells computer music hardware. They'll be able to lead you in the right direction.

The steps for mixing vocals into an instrumental differ depending on the genre of the music and what sound you want to achieve in your mix. Thus, there aren't any universal steps for each and every song you want to mix your vocals into.
Although this is true, there are three things that are almost always used when mixing vocals: 1. Compression 2. EQ 3. Reverb.
I can't explain all these three here or else this post will get too long so I'll give you this link to some Free PDF files explaining how those three work from Computer Music's website. You may also see one of our previous answers on Compression.
I also cannot tell you which settings to use because, again, it depends on the instrumental of the song and what you want your vocals to sound like. I suggest that you try looking for some tutorials on how to use all three of those things, so that you can learn how exactly they're used. There are plenty of those on YouTube.
BUT...
While it is true that Compression, EQ and Reverb are used in most vocal mixes, it is not always necessary to use them.
To an extreme, there are some audio engineers who rely on the natural recording and due to artistic preference, decide to not use any audio processing on their audio files. Others may also feel that compression is not necessary since their microphones are pretty good at leveling sound for them, but still use EQ and Reverb.
It's really all a matter of preference. Like I've mentioned before: Mixing is not only a technical process but a creative one as well. There are no set rules as long as the sound that you've achieved doesn't hurt and is pleasant to the ears.
