Hello everyone, I'm starting a new fun, little side project!

✨Weird Little Guy of the Week✨

Each week, I'm going to choose an animal from the slightly excessive spreadsheet I've made, draw and then upload it. It'll be very light on info unlike some other excellent blogs as I want to keep it just as a casual and chill side project.

All the animals I've chosen are ones I'm drawn to in being a bit unusual. Some are very obscure but there's also plenty of more well known species mixed in. All of them are definitely worthy of appreciation. As the blog goes on hopefully it'll grow to be a really nice showcase of the weird and wonderful diversity of life.

I chose the fox as one of mine, it's an obvious choice but it'd be nice to celebrate an animal so commonly denigrated. Not that old 'foul mart' has had much of a fun time of it historically either.

Some interesting options here in general, they've not just gone with the obvious animals.

The Sumiciu is a peculiar house-spirit from Asturias. These ravenous creatures are often blamed for the disappearance of household items and are known to swallow and disappear whatever they get their hands on. With an all-consuming void for a mouth they eat and eat and are never sated. Their true, ghostly form remains a mystery as they are never seen by mortal eyes.

What is the difference between a bee and a wasp? Well, to put it in the simplest way— bees are complete nectarivores and get protein by processing pollen and nectar in multiple ways while wasps are only nectarivores as adults and get all their protein needs out of the way as larvae by consuming bug meat. So here comes the exception; despite being more related to yellowjackets and paper wasps than they are to bees, members of the group referred to as "pollen wasps" feed their larvae a diet sourced entirely from plant pollen and nectar, just like bees. Though while bees are known for processing it and making it more of a "bread", these wasps do it more stew style.

They also sleep very similarly to scoliid wasp (which they are only distantly related to) by curling up tightly around sticks or grass

Important update: I have further learned that they collect pollen by rubbing their lightly fuzzed heads against flower stamens and then use their comb hands to brush it out

not sure if it is autism or inaturalist (and in this circumstance these two things may be equivalent). but i CAN now identify any species of horseshoe crab with confidence. excited for this to be of no significance to my life even remotely

Flowers in the crannied wall

Does anybody have the vaguest idea what these guys are? (Image shot on the bridge over the River Slaney in Baltinglass. There are a LOT more like this growing on the south side of the wall. ...Forgive me for not investigating the north side of the wall, as I had no desire to wind up in the river. Even if it's very clean, as you can tell by the herons fishing in it. And the trout, who look very happy with the environment.)

The flowering plant is Ivy-Leaved Toadflax, and it's companion fern is a Maidenhair Spleenwort. Both are plants that have adapted well to living on stone walls. The flowers of the Toadflax are heliotropic, meaning they turn to stay facing the sun, until they've been pollinated and fertilized, whereupon they twist around and back down into the plant/crevice they came out of, effectively planting their own seeds back in the wall.

In addition:

I'm the uk at least the ivy-leaved toadflax is an introduced species from a good few (?) hundred years ago which is why it mostly occurs on walls on and around towns. It's very pretty and doesn't do any harm. The Welsh name is trwyn-y-llo or calf's nose, presumably after the shape of the flower.

Maidenhair ferns get their name from their wiry black stems which the imaginative Edwardian pteridologists thought resembled female pubic hair. Funny old bunch, them lot.
