Boom! Studios Strikes First-Look Deal At Netflix

The first-look deal, which comes nearly three months after the streaming service entered development on a feature adaptation of the publisher’s The Unsound with David F. Sandberg (Shazam!), will see the two work together to develop live-action and animated series.

The publisher had previously made a deal with 20th Century Studios, who took a minor stake in the company, that runs through January 2021, which includes the supernatural thriller The Empty Man, currently set for an August 2020 release, and was set for an animated blockbuster adaptation of Mouse Guard with Wes Ball (The Maze Runner) at the helm, but the $150 million production was shut down following the Disney merger.

Boom! went on to partner with other studios for adaptations including Memetic, with Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg producing via their Point Grey banner and Lionsgate attached to distribute, as well as a slew of TV projects set up at Amazon, HBO Max, Peacock, CBS All Access and Disney+. The studio will now primarily work with Netflix to adapt one of the largest libraries of comic book IP outside of Marvel and DC.

“BOOM! characters are innately special, they’re colorful, diverse and varied and their stories have the power to ignite something in all of us,” Brian Wright, Vice President, Original Series at Netflix, said in a statement. “We can’t wait to bring these stories from the page to the screen to fans in every corner of the world.”

BOOM! Studios CEO and Founder Ross Richie will executive produce all series through the deal alongside President of Development Stephen Christy.

The Shining & Justice League Dark Series Coming From Bad Robot & HBO!

After teaming up with the production company for the wildly acclaimed Westworld, HBO is continuing its partnership with J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath’s Bad Robot Productions by ordering three new series for the upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, including new adaptations of The Shining and Justice League Dark!

The first series Duster, is to be co-written by J.J. Abrams & LaToya Morgan. Set in the 1970’s Southwest, the life of a gutsy getaway driver for a growing crime syndicate goes from awful to wildly, stupidly, dangerously awful. Morgan is currently a writer on The Walking Dead. Previously, she was a co-executive producer and writer of AMC’s Into the Badlands and TURN: Washington’s Spies and was a writer for NBC’s Parenthood and Showtime’s Shameless.

The second series, Overlook, is a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s masterpiece The Shining. Overlook explores the untold, terrifying stories of the most famous haunted hotel in American fiction and reunites Bad Robot with King and Warner Bros. Television, who previously collaborated on the acclaimed psychological-horror series Castle Rock for Hulu.

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie,” Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TNT, TBS, & truTV, said in a statement. “What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

The third series will be an adaptation of the acclaimed DC comics characters Justice League Dark, though details on who will be involved, characters or otherwise, have yet to be revealed by HBO Max or Bad Robot.

All of the Bad Robot series for HBO Max will be executive produced by J.J. Abrams and its Head of Television, Ben Stephenson. Rachel Rusch Rich, Bad Robot’s Executive Vice President of Television will serve as a co-executive producer. Warner Bros. International Television Distribution will be the global distributor for the programs.

HBO greenlights Nicolas Winding Refn’s Maniac Cop as limited series

According to Deadline, HBO has given a series order for Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming reboot of Maniac Cop, based on William Lustig’s 1988 cult classic film. Refn will serve as an executive producer through his byNWR Originals banner along with John Hyams.

“I’ve always been a devoted admirer of John Hyams,” Refn said. “We’ve been talking about a re-imagining of the Maniac Cop films for a number of years, but as we continued to work on the material, we found ourselves wanting to explore the world we were creating in greater depth. Turning Maniac Cop into a series will allow us to realize our wildest ambitions and to reach an enormous audience though partners HBO and Canal+. This show will be an unadulterated, action-packed horror odyssey. Given the current state of the world, though, Maniac Cop will also be a strong commentary on the decline of civilization”.

Set in Los Angeles, the Maniac Cop series is told through a kaleidoscope of characters, from cop to common criminal. A killer in uniform has uncaged mayhem upon the streets. Paranoia leads to social disorder as a city wrestles with the mystery of the exterminator in blue – is he mere mortal, or a supernatural force?

Written by Larry Cohen, the original film was set in New York City and starred Robert Z’Dar, Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree, William Smith and Sheree North. Refn has been developing the reboot since 2016. It was first announced as a movie remake with Hyams attached to direct.

The series will be directed by Refn and Hyams, with the Danish filmmaker serving as its showrunner. Nick Hall, Lene Borglum, Frederic Fiore, Alex Gayner and Efe Cakarel will be executive producing along with the original film’s director William Lustig. HBO has the North American rights on the series while Canal+ is in-charge of its French rights. Logical Pictures will handle the reboot’s other international distribution.

Tim Seeley’s Hack/Slash comic book series is getting a television adaptation

Tim Seeley’s acclaimed horror comic book series Hack/Slash is finally getting an adaptation. The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that the rights have landed at Relativity Television where A Good Day to Die Hard and X-Men Origins: Wolverine scribe Skip Woods has been tasked with developing a script.

Published first by Devil’s Due and later by Image Comics, Hack/Slash is officially described as follows:

At the end of every horror movie, one girl always survives… in this case, Cassie Hack not only survives, she turns the tables by hunting and destroying the horrible slashers that would do harm to the innocent! Alongside the gentle giant known as Vlad, the two cut a bloody path through those who deserve to be put down… hard!

Over the years, Cassie Hack has gone up against quite a few varieties of “slashers”. She has even crossed over with comic book characters like Evil Ernie and faced off against some familiar movie characters, such as Child Play‘s Chucky, the Reanimator and even the Evil Dead franchise’s Ashley J. Williams.

The Hack/Slash comics themselves are currently on a publishing hiatus. The ongoing Image series ended in 2013 after 25 issues while 2014 saw the release of the five-issue miniseriesHack/Slash: Son of Samhain.

Skip Woods will also executive produce the Hack/Slash series alongside Adrian Askarieh and Ray Ricord. Daniel Alter and Geoffrey Yim are also attached as co-executive producers.

Lights Out: James Wan Producing Feature of Eerie Short

Lights Out is an online favorite, an eerie three minutes crafted by David F. Sandberg for the Who’s There Film Challenge. It’s been plenty shared and reached Vimeo Staff Pick thanks to a simple nailing of old school afraid of the dark horror. Now, The Conjuring’s James Wan is producing a feature adaptation of the film, written by Eric A. Heisserer, with Sandberg directing and young Gabriel Bateman set to star.

Batemen currently appears on TV’s Stalker and had a role in last fall’s Wan-producedAnnabelle. Variety reports the feature will concern “a supernatural entity attacking a family, with one of the members required to step up to protect them from a threat that can be seen only when the lights go out.”

Wan produces alongside Sandberg, Lawrence Grey and Heisserer (2011’s The Thing,Final Destination 5). Hopefully Lights Out’s spooky simplicity will translate to feature length.

Variety reports that SEGA is moving forward with live-action and animated adaptations based on their games. The company has hired Evan Cholfin as head of development and production at Tokyo-based Stories International, a joint venture of SEGA and advertising agency Hakuhodo DY Group that was launched to produce films, TV shows and entertainment for digital platforms.

Stories International is moving forward with Altered Beast, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Rise of Nightmares, and Crazy Taxi first as English-language live-action and animated projects. Virtua Fighter and Golden Axe are also properties that could be adapted.

It is unclear which project will become a feature film, a TV show or a digital series at this time.

The trade adds that SEGA has also completed a minority investment in All Nippon Entertainment Works. The deal with ANEW is expected to help Stories bolster its entertainment efforts in Hollywood by gaining access to 20 Japanese rights holders who own films, TV shows, books, toys and manga titles.

The Evil Dead Films Are Being Collected in an Insanely Cool Package

I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot in the Works Source: Deadline  September 15, 2014

Sony Pictures is planning a reboot of the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise, Deadline reports. Oculus writer and director Mike Flanagan will script, re-adaptating the original source material, the 1973 novel of the same name by Lois Duncan. The 1997 film version, directed by Jim Gillespie with a script by Kevin Williamson, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe and Freddie Prinze, Jr. as a group of high school students who accidentally hit and kill a man with their car one night. Although they believe they have successfully covered up their crime, the group finds themselves at the receiving end of a slasher killer's serial rampage one year later. I Know What You Did Last Summer was followed by a theatrical sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer in 1998 and a direct-to-video third film, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, in 2006. Neal Moritz will produce I Know What You Did Last Summer alongside Flanagan and Jeff Howard.

Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard to Write, Direct I Saw the Devil Remake Source: TheWrap  September 15, 2014

Last December, it was revealed that an English-language remake of Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil, and now TheWrap brings word that You're Next and The Guest team of Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard will bring the project to life. Barrett will write the script with Wingard at the helm while Snoot Entertainment's Keith Calder and Jessica Calder (who worked with the pair on both You're Next and The Guest) will produce with Adi Shankar (Dredd) and Spencer Silna. Shankar previously spoke about the film saying "Kim Jee-woon's 'I Saw the Devil' is perfect in so many ways. The intention is not to remake the film per se, but rather to 'port' it for international audiences." Check back for further updates on the project as the outlet reports director Wingard has already begun meeting with talent for the film. Released in 2010 to critical acclaim, Kim Jee-woon's original film is described as follows:"The embodiment of pure evil, Kyung-chul is a dangerous psychopath who kills for pleasure. On a freezing, snowy night, his latest victim is the beautiful Juyeon, daughter of a retired police chief and pregnant fiancée of elite special agent Soo-hyun. Obsessed with revenge, Soo-hyun is determined to track down the murderer, even if doing so means becoming a monster himself. Sonic the Hedgehog Races to the Big Screen!

Source: Sony Pictures Entertainment  June 10, 2014 Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet, a CG animation film production company of the SEGA SAMMY Group, today announced a partnership to develop a film based on the acclaimedSonic the Hedgehog video game series. A hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature, the movie will be written by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux and produced by Neal H. Moritz through his Original Film banner, along with Marza’s Takeshi Ito and Mie Onishi. Toby Ascher will serve as an executive producer.

The film will look to capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise, including the evil Dr. Eggman. Playful, mischievous, and quick on his feet in more ways than one, the world’s fastest hedgehog is known for his ability to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies. For more than two decades, Sonic has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons and a $1 billion franchise with more than 140 million games sold. Commenting on the announcement, Hannah Minghella, Columbia Pictures’ president of Production said, “There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base. Along with our wonderful creative partners at Marza, we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”  Marza Animation Planet CEO Masanao Maeda added, “Sonic has had dozens of adventures on the console and the small screen, and we’re thrilled that he’s now coming to the big screen. Sofia Coppola to Direct Live-Action The Little Mermaid

Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, The Bling Ring) is, according to Deadline, in negotiations to direct Universal Pictures and Working Title Films’ upcoming take on the Hans Christian Andersen fairytaleThe Little Mermaid. Joe Wright was previously looking to direct the live-action feature. Edward Scissorhands scribe Caroline Thompson is currently rewriting the project, which has previously been drafted by Fifty Shades of Grey and Saving Mr. Banks screenwriter Kelly Marcel and, before that, Brick Lane and Shame's Abi Morgan. Andersen’s story, which follows a young mermaid who gives up her life in the sea for a human prince, was first published in 1837 and has been adapted numerous times for stage and screen. Wright’s version is inspired by a children’s puppet theatre production of the classic at London’s Little Angel Theatre Company.

Jeff Katz Plans a New Trip to Sleepaway Camp

Camp Arawak is getting ready to open its doors for another summer. In an appropriately Halloween-timed announcement, Deadline is reporting that producer Jeff Katz has optioned the rights to the cult horror classicSleepaway Camp and is looking to reboot the franchise on the big screen. Written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, the 1983 original featured a surprising twist ending that set it apart from other slasher fare of the era. The series continued with two direct sequels, which featured a slightly more comical approach with Pamela Springsteen (Bruce Springsteen's sister) in the lead. A fourth film, Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, started production in 1992 and remained unfinished for two decades before going direct to DVD. Most recently, Hiltzik returned to the franchise for Return to Sleepaway Camp, which similarly languished in post-production before finally receiving a DVD release in 2008. Katz will produce alongside Hiltzik, Michele Tatosian, and Felissa Rose.

FX Developing TV Series Sequel to American Psycho

A few months back, author Brett Easton Ellis was publicly musing on Twitter about the idea of a sequel to his hit novel "American Psycho," and it seems someone was paying attention.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate Television and FX are developing a TV sequel to the text with executive producer Allison Shearmur and writer Stefan Jaworski.

While the original novel, and film, depicted the Patrick Bateman character in the stockmarket boom of the '80s and as a critique of the "yuppie" subculture, the sequel is said to follow Bateman in modern day America where he finds a protégé and sets up a "sadistic social experiment" to turn them into his equal.

No word on if Ellis is involved with the project at all, or if it will retain any connectivity to the 2000 Mary Harron film that starred Christian Bale
