The story follows Yuki's discovery that her childhood friend, Zero, has spent the last four years trying to fight his transformation into a vampire, and he has finally succumbed. Purebloods can destroy lower vampires with ease and compel them to do their bidding.

When a Pureblood vampire dies, their bodies slowly disperse into small sparkles before shattering into glass-like shards.
