Confessions of a Lucky Storyteller - I don’t do any of this alone
18 years ago I was getting married to KZ.
She did the flowers. I was the DJ at the wedding. We rented a restaurant in Boston that was closed on Saturdays for the whole shebang.
The flower arrangements were too large for any vehicle we had access to, so the day before the wedding we walked them from the warehouse we lived in in Fort Point Channel across the Summer Street bridge to the restaurant.
I couldn't find a DJ who would agree to all the songs I didn't want played at the wedding, because they claimed to "be there to make the party happen."
So, I made 3 DAT tapes, based on the itinerary, spending a lotta money on CD's to get the songs we wanted. There was much dancing, merriment and no DJ!
Then we got to the Sonesta Hotel where we were told to go by a friend who was nice enough to give us a room! Only problem, the hotel didn't have any reservation. Our friend forgot to book it.
Standing at a front desk, wearing the clothes we got married in, being told there was no reservation under any name we could think of, was not the plan.
Luckily, there was one room that I slapped down a credit card on and we didn't have to spend our wedding night in a huge studio space, with our roomate and her dog.
A couple weeks later I moved to Los Angeles, KZ followed 5 months later because she had weddings booked.
I can honestly say, nothing turned out the way I thought it was going to in LA, right up to today.
But the one person I could always count on to keep me propped up when things fell apart is KZ.
Even now, today, on our wedding anniversary, when things are going bad for a project, KZ's there, cheering me on.
Sometimes everything not working out is actually everything working out perfectly.
I am a very lucky human being.
