Alcyone was the daughter of Aeolus (the god of wind), and used to live with her husband Ceyx at the seaside. Both were so happy and in love with each other that they drew a parallel between them and the couple of Zeus (king of the gods) and Hera (goddess of marriage), calling each other with the gods’ names. This angered Zeus, so while Ceyx was at sea (going to consult an oracle), the god threw a thunderbolt at his ship. Soon after, Morpheus, (god of dreams) disguised as Ceyx, appeared to Alcyone as an apparition to tell her of his fate, and she threw herself into the sea in her grief. Out of compassion, the Olympian Gods changed them both into common kingfishers, or ‘Halcyon Birds’, named after her. When Alcyone made her nest on the beach, waves threatened to destroy it. Aeolus restrained his winds and kept them calm during seven days in each year, so she could lay her eggs. These became known as the ‘Halcyon Days’ the seven days in winter when storms never occured.
